If you ask me there's really no need to mess around with the first few grades. Just learn plenty of styles, rudiments and theory type stuff and there's no reason why you can't start on grade 5. That's what I did, then 6, then 8. As a result of that I ended up being a grade 8 drummer after only playing for 5 years. There are plenty of people who progress more quickly still.
