I could write many things about this documentary but I won't - will just simple say that I'm amazed of it. It's true that there were no high ranking people filmed here on this film, all of those that spoke were muzhiki or even less then that.. but nevertheless still - good and honest, true movie! i am from the united states, and after watching this i have even more respect for the russian people, i know it is not all russia but i realise these cultures are so much different than the west. these convicts are introspective and thoughtfull, it seems like even the average trash overthere is better than a lot of middle and upper class people here in america. honor and self respect are the standard not the exeption. still, such a sad state for our race either way.

American prisons are savage because that's all the inmates have to do is be savage. In Russia you don't have the energy to be savage when you are sick from the food. Or just came out of a room filled with 26 strong men allowed to do whatever they want to you.
Okay. But "savage" isn't the word you should put on the men and women in American prisons. Many are good people - slightly twisted motives, but good people. Also, in American penitentiaries, you are still put in rooms with many men stronger than you. And, for the most part? They are still allowed to do whatever they want.
It is true that an environment will shape you. But it still is that those people aren't savages, they aren't evil, and the environment, while perhaps brutal, isn't sub-human.
i dunno as far as i know in the usa you dont share your cell with more than 2 people, in eastern europe or the carribean for instance than is not the case.
Four, I believe, is the most the cells are legally allowed to hold. But it depends. No, I know, of course that is not the case. But my point was that people should stop bashing the USA all the time. I'm sorry, but we aren't the cause of all evil, and our penitentiaries are not filled with scum.

I depends on the jail and crime. Long term inmates her can have 1-4 a cell. If its just a holding prison for lighter crimes it can be a huge room filled with them. There's always degrees.

i am from the united states, and after watching this i have even more respect for the russian people, i know it is not all russia but i realise these cultures are so much different than the west. these convicts are introspective and thoughtfull, it seems like even the average trash overthere is better than a lot of middle and upper class people here in america. honor and self respect are the standard not the exeption. still, such a sad state for our race either way.

if you want to prove ozfuji's statement wrong, you might want to try not exhibiting the kind of traits that brought about that thought to begin with.
As for ozfuji's point- it's not entirely wrong. look at what they're saying. ie, 'the important thing is to remain human.' the average person i know, living in middle class suburbs atm, would be like 'oh fuck, i'm in jail, i hate the government'. the end. which is hardly introspective.

Excuse me, but you're only taking what the producers present. American prisons have these same types of men and women in them. You really can't judge until you know all your facts, and in a situation such as this, it is impossible to know ALL the facts. So therefore you are stereotyping. And that's disgusting in and of itself.

The crimes the criminals commit are similar.
The American and Eastern European penitentiaries are NOT similar.
You're environment will shape you after so many years.
American prisons are savage because that's all the inmates have to do is be savage. In Russia you don't have the energy to be savage when you are sick from the food. Or just came out of a room filled with 26 strong men allowed to do whatever they want to you.

Okay. But "savage" isn't the word you should put on the men and women in American prisons. Many are good people - slightly twisted motives, but good people. Also, in American penitentiaries, you are still put in rooms with many men stronger than you. And, for the most part? They are still allowed to do whatever they want.
It is true that an environment will shape you. But it still is that those people aren't savages, they aren't evil, and the environment, while perhaps brutal, isn't sub-human.

Four, I believe, is the most the cells are legally allowed to hold. But it depends. No, I know, of course that is not the case. But my point was that people should stop bashing the USA all the time. I'm sorry, but we aren't the cause of all evil, and our penitentiaries are not filled with scum.
There's nice people in them! The fact that they're just numbers, just statistics, to liberal-minded fools is what pisses me off. No one can know everything about US prisons, so just stop.

I depends on the jail and crime. Long term inmates her can have 1-4 a cell. If its just a holding prison for lighter crimes it can be a huge room filled with them. There's always degrees.

This video doesn´t represent every jail in Russia. There are better private prisons there. Secondly if you think there is no homosexual activity going on in RUssian jails you are either naive or stupid. All kind of brutality is very common in those prisons.

Please, dear, tell me. When did I say there was no homosexual activity going on in Russian jails? Actually, there is. A lot. And the submissive partner is treated as an outcast to the rest of the jail, only allowed to socialize with other jail rape victims. Sometimes, men even tattoo onto their victims bodies, making sure other people know their "position" as well.

@vlodigiani You are right. An ex girl friend of mine was Russian. One of the things that I liked about her was her toughness and her meloncholy. She, like many of the speakers here, was brilliant with language. She is one of the wittiest people I have ever met. what's more, wittier in English, a language that isn't even her first! I have had a place in my heart for Russian and her people.

@ozfuji I lived there for 20 years - and I do not missing this place at all - BUT I'm glad I was raised there and I've met and hanged around with people like in this movie .... Do not get me wrong those people suffered a lot , but they caused lotsa suffering and death too , .... and yes average "russian" wich grew during soviet times is usually more interesting person than any western one , NOT better ....

im sorry for them, if society doesnt want them among us, kill them(if they commited a very serious crime ofc)that will lower the crime rate and prisioners. dont make the same mistake they made.we have no right to put those ppl in those conditions dispite of what condicions they have put others to be arested.dont forget some of those ppl are simple robers and thiefs that had to do it to eat.simply think befour you talk crap.
