  • I remember watching this show. But I don't remember it having a red, red, red show opening. Yikes!

  • Now, I am not going to say the tv programming is so bad, because it is not. However, what I miss from most of today's shows, the show's theme music.

  • Better than the S.W.A.T. theme. I believe that's the great Tom Scott on sax. I really wish I knew who was on drums. This show was pretty good too.

  • The drums are sick on this track...is that Clyde from the JB's?

  • Groundbreaking plot. This was an outstanding show.

  • Is it a concidence that the bus in the gated entrance is the same academy on the opening for Charlies Angels who Kate Jackson also stars?

  • Hated the 70s clothes but loved the shows!

  • This was the true Rookies show in the 70's the current Rookie Blue has nothing on The Rookies.

  • One of the few tv theme songs that could actually rival Hawaii Five-O.

  • "Come in ledlow 7. come in ledlow 9. respond to a 211 in progress at 5th and Main". I think I saw every episode when I was a kid. Loved this show. Thanks for posting. Great job ; - )

  • Adam-12, Rookies, SWAT, and Emergency! were my favs. Baretta, Cannon, Charlie's angles and Rockford Files and Vegas were kewl too! Love all those 70's shows, and the funky music. They just don't make anything good anymore. Enough with Reality TV. Bring back the 70's!!!!

  • @joeyjeep1231 Right on Brother about the funky Music being a Guitar player myself i love the Wah Wah reminds you of Shaft.

  • I remember this back in the days.

  • One of the cooler title sequences. At the risk of sounding old, they just don't make 'em like that anymore. Like a previous poster, I like the sax solo, along with the "wacka-chika" guitar.

  • From Season 1

  • Its a shame several of these shows after the release of the first, second, and maybe third season of the shows;the remaining ones are still in the vault due to what they're calling "low sales of the products" that's why they don't release any more of them; unless an actor passed away then they might released the shows on dvd.

  • Lt. Ryker..... was that Jean Luc Picard's first mate, Lt. Ryker's great great great great great grand dad?

  • whats taking so long for the second season to get released on DVD

  • @morgan8757

That won't happen unless more people buy the already-existent S1 DVD. Bear in mind there are four seasons in all (1972 to 1976).

  • Michael Ontkean rocked!

  • The forerunner to Charlie's Angels? 3 cops/same scene at the LA police academy at the opening credits/Kate Jackson.... wow the similarities. Just sayin".

  • I remember watching this as a kid with my folks, it was pretty good....thanks fo sharing.

  • GEORGE STANFORD BROWN'S DAUGHTER IS A SWEETHEART OF A GIRL!!!! ELIZABETH, YOU ARE AND HAVE ALWAYS BEEN A GOOD SPIRIT.

  • Used to love this show as a kid. My favorite 70's cop show was "Starsky & Hutch" but I loved "The Rookies" there were some really great episodes! I wanted to be a cop (a lady cop) but a cop nonetheless. Had the biggest crush on "Micheal Ontkean" :)

  • I use to watch this show when I was a kid too...in Australia. It was on Saturday nights at 730pm. Great era, great shows and great memories....

  • I used to watch this show with my mom too!! I never missed an episode. I wish I could find it on dvd.

  • O yeah, Mike Ontkean, what year was that?

  • Never watched this show but love 70s cop dramas. Is it worth buying on DVD?

  • There were very FEW shows back in the 70's that weren't any good. Most everything on television was pretty darn good.

  • I had a major crush on Kate Jackson in this show!

  • @ChopstickBrando

You and me both! Kate was HOT back in the day!

  • this has got to be one of the best tv openings in history. love the music, and Kate Jackson is so stunningly beautiful. 70's TV openings kick ass

  • memories

  • I don't know how to do it (I am computer stupid), but, why don't one of you all (or more) send these comment's to Sony and beg them to release Season 2. PLEASE???? I AM BEGGING!!!! I LOVED this show!!!! As well as a LOT of other people did.

  • I remember this when I was a kid!

  • On of the shows that inspired me to my second career! Add Adam 12, Dragnet, Hawaii 50 and Chips..man I was souled..I mean sold.

  • Oh yeah, lets not forget SWAT and the origional HIGHWAY PATROL!

  • I amost forgot, The FBI (in ccolor)..lol

  • best tv show song and opening : awesome. kate jackson <--- hottest 70's tv babe

  • kate jackson=foxy lady with class!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Does anyone have, or, has anyone seen the episode with Strother Martin, who plays 'The Teacher' [a teacher of crime to younger thieves]???

I believe Nick Nolte [and, possibly, Ed Begley Jr. as well] is one of the guest stars in that episode as well.

  • Loved this show as a kid, catchy theme too...

  • GREAT Title Sequence...and SUPERB Signature Tune (Theme Song). I believe the tune was penned by The Much Regretted Elmer Bernstein, yes?

And one of the GREATEST series on U.S. telly *EVER!* (Used ta watch it on WLS TV-7 back home)

    (*Sigh*) Memories...

    Thanx fer this, m8..

  • I watched the Rookies on Monday nights with my mom on WLS, too. Our family was in to cop shows and this was definitely one of the better ones.

  • @cdfreester I loved watching the Rookies on channel 7 in Chicago. Loved that theme music for the show!

  • @gjohnsoningary elmer bernstein also did staccatto and todays FBI and more movie soundtracks than anybody

  • @spacepatrolman Elmer Bernsteinb did this? Wow! He was versatile!

  • When the hell is Sony gonna release season 2 of the rookies? I mean i just hate it when they start releasing these shows on dvd then they don't commit to the rest of them using "poor sales"for not releasing as an excuse i can name several shows they have put out the 1st or 2nd and maybe 3rd season and the hell with the rest.

  • I always thought it was interesting that both Charlie's Angels and The Rookies used the same opening police department building. Great post! Thanks for putting it up.

  • @caseyblue224 Noticed myself, "Once upon a time there where three little girls..." and they use the same bus going into the entrance.

  • @69erthx1138 Never noticed, you're right. Shot of the entance of LAPD academy in Elysian Park (my father was a cop; they had annual picnics for families when I was a kid)

  • @1caninelover a gang that was vandalising the home of a veteran who had a stroke said dont tell them your real name my father is a cop

  • @spacepatrolman linda lovelace had a father that was a cop

  • @spacepatrolman the cops in los angeles are stupid assholes a woman was walking down the street with a machete sticking out of her back and nobody did anything to help her the pigs gave joy rides in the police car to the hillside stranglers who of course were italians like the boston strangler

  • @spacepatrolman He is dead, worked 30 years (from WW11 thru '70s) good-natured & got along with everyone. Got in trouble w/ LAPD for NOT whacking people around for no reason. After retirement he spent next 20 years at L.A. public defenders office...he actually was more suited defending the poor than he ever was at arresting anyone.

  • @1caninelover who are you refering to?

  • @spacepatrolman My LAPD father you replied to me about. He got along with everyone, didn't matter to him what color, what neighborhood etc... but LAPD did not like that characteristic. He was often in trouble from superiors who told him he was expected to whack people for no reason. I sure found out as a kid most cops were not like him and to keep my mouth shut when I got pulled over in L.A. for driving while poor in the rich areas.

  • @1caninelover oh i thought you were talking about joeseph wambaugh some guys were dressed like cops they had a police car the only way the detective could tell they werent cops was the radio was on the wrong frequency

  • @spacepatrolman Never knew that although I've read most of his books. Tactic used by predators to get women to pull over at night is shining a white light & telling them to pull over in remote areas. Was pulled over for driving a bit over speed limit coming home from work at night. CHP officer was irritated that I was speeding up to put distance. He had no lights on, I didn't stop until he put on lights/siren went on. Told him truth, I didn't know he was a cop, he was OK with that.

  • @1caninelover was your father an investigator with the public defenders office I know a couple of public defenders around here they seem overworked

  • @spacepatrolman No,he worked for public defenders office as a private investigater, the attorneys' & defendants use PIs to help with their cases and yeah, they are overworked as not many can afford their own attorney, he was good at it, always believed in innocence of his clients.

  • @1caninelover I know a copule of private investigators one arrested 30 people in a riot the other gives lie detector tests

  • @spacepatrolman He worked for defenders office, private investigators work for the defense also digging up stuff to help their clients avoid prosecution (the only ones you see on news & TV are working for prosecution)

  • Very ROBUST theme songs in the early to middle 70's...the way it should be.

Late 70's it took a big poop with "Mork and Mindy", "Love boat", "Waltons" ect...

  • All these 70's shows were great! Now it's all shit!

  • Sounds sick, but I wanted to get hurt enough to end up in the ER and get treated by nurse Kate Jackson!

  • lol...right there with ya

  • Ditto...I really liked her in those days, as well as when she was on 'Dark Shadows'...

  • My Father And I grew up watching this!

  • Yes Bro this was a awsome show.Kate jackson was sexy dayum.

  • A great show and the opening theme ranks right up there with Peter Gunn and Hawaii Five-0. I was always surprised that the theme from SWAT got all kids of radio air time, really becoming a bigger hit than the actual show, while the Rookies theme never made it off the TV screen.

  • Fue una de las series más exitosas en la televisión de Costa Rica durante el decenio de los 70, trasnsmitida por Telecentro Canal 6 y Telenac Canal 2.

  • The video shows a still image of the same police aced' they used for the actual Charlies angels walk out on their intro. Interesting.

  • The Rookies theme is the hottest theme of all the cop shows I dug as a kid growing up in the 70's.

As a bass player, the groove under the sax solo combined with the police sirens blaring between 0:27 - 0:45 sends a chill down my spine!

Everyone in the cast was totally cool: My man, Georg Stanford Brown. Sammy Melville (RIP bro), Mike Ontkean & katie Jackson!

  • I'd love to find that in stereo

  • A poster on the Mission Impossible vid said to check this out before anyone claim M:I has the best theme music. DAMN it's TOO CLOSE to call.

This theme is CRACK. M:I has the icon status going for it but damn this is one hell of an arrangement.

  • groovy man!! :-)

  • I used to watch this show with my mom, too. Brings back a lot of good memories. Next to Hawaii Five-O, this was my favorite show in its time.

  • Memories!!!

  • wish tvland would bring this back. A shame.

  • Love it! Thanks for posting.

  • A flash from the good old days when the theme music was more than intro music, but it also spoke to the attitude of the show. Fantastic talent that we never see these days.

  • The caliber of TV that's sorely missing today.

  • Kate Jackson!!!!!!

  • one of the best tv show opening credit sequences and theme music.......AWESOME, they don't make them like this anymore

  • This is my all time favorite tv theme song even more so than Hawaii Five-o, I was 13 when this show debuted

  • I was only like 10 years old or something, but I couldn't wait for Kate Jackson to appear in each episode. Grrrr!

  • I would bring this show back to tvland.

  • this was a good show for it's time! :D

  • This brought back memories.

  • I forgot how HOT Kate Jackson used to be

  • GREAT show! I think I liked it's spinoff, "SWAT", better though. :)

  • SWAT was wild! When i was younger,me & my friends used to pretend to be those guys!

  • @EASE83 Yea its like combat with redneck cops

  • Both "The Rookies" and "S.W.A.T." were Spelling-Goldberg productions that originally aired on ABC. In fact, Kate Jackson, as you all know, later appeared in another Spelling-Goldberg TV series, also on the same network, called "Charlie's Angels", which was a huge ratings hit back in 1976.

  • To Ease83--thank you so much for posting this....I loved this show and it really brings back great memories.

  • I swear it does! thanks for checkin'!

  • Great TV show. I remember it as a kid. Thanks for sharing it to all on You Tube! Thank you!

  • No problem!
