  • I'd never known of this man before this ad. Makes me even more proud that Irish blood runs through my veins, and proud that he was selfless and did what needed to be done.

  • @eskercurve

moron, did u not go to school

  • @bennocelt no, it's called the American school system sucks and is American centric. I became an engineer, so I guess something went right ;)

  • How does he acquire pint glasses with the Guinness logo which came out in 1996, in 1927?

  • @joegerob so it is! well spotted!

  • Apparently the Black and Tans raided his gaf during the Rising. When they seen the Queens medals in his cabinet they shat themselves and left immediately.

  • Actually just finished reading the book about him yesterday, greatest book iv ever read, will read it again soon, his second expedition, the one this march is based on is the greatest feat by anyone ever let alone an Irish man, the greatest Irish man ever and should never be forgotten, ps he actually didn't like pulling pints in the end haha

  • this reminds me of the halo beleive ads. they both seem to have the same sense of EPIC in them.

  • Theres Louis in Fair City

  • i would like to see a movie about tom crean

  • Just realised thats Damien Dempsey 1:00 playing in the pub. A famous Irish musician today

  • @domhnallbain Kerry Dances

  • @domhnallbain Kerry Dances

  • @domhnallbain Kerry Dances

  • Ye i just noticed it was Damien Dempsey too, ha small world

  • This advert is an inspiration. It pays great homage to an Irish Hero. It essentially inspired me to continue my service in the Irish Defence forces. it reminded me that all hardships lead to something better. Even so, I believe that the modern Youth of Ireland should read the biography of Crean, to serve as direction for us all to achieve something great in our lifetime.

  • @roadworx Unsong Hero I believe it was called. An absolutely epic book. Couldn't agree with you more about Irish youth needing to read it

  • @spartak95 ...Except he poured several thousand pints of it in his pub in Kerry!...

  • that was years after his heroics in antarctica...nothing to do with his personality...this ad is just guinness leaching off him

  • it's funny how you take one man's opinion against the opinion of many others in higher positions of knowledge.

  • wat are u on about, its an add about guinness not british immigration, take ure shite else where

  • this for some reasons reminds me of trekking home after a night out when i've spent all my taxi money on drink

  • i hope thats snow in his beard

  • xD xD xD xD

  • Brilliant tribute/ad to an amazing Irish hero

  • Alone for 35 freezing miles, he made his way back to base in 18hrs, in order to save two friends

  • Last week i was in Anascaul, but under the rain i can't found the South Pole Inn... My Dingle!!! :-°(

  • i was in that pud,its near dingle, dont know wat the towns called,

  • They are in no way in trouble. they are cutting costs to fit the current financial climate and balance supply and demand. The market out there is very tough but its plan to reduce costs is to help the long term sustainability of the brands and the business. Huge portfolio of top brands, Captain Morgans, Smirnoff, Gordons, Baileys, Bells, Johnnie Walker, Guinness, Bulleit, Moet, Blossom Hill, Bushmills,Tanquery. In a changing market staying still is the a recipe for disaster.

  • there cutting jobs for now but aint in trouble, diageo is moving its dundalk and killkenny brewerys eg: smitwicks harp. and moving to clondalkin which guinness will be made and james gate will brew guinness but not as much, guinness emailed me these plans last year because im subscribed to offers vouchers etc,

  • Diageo? One of the biggest companies in the world

  • go on damo dempsey !

  • wow! i havn't seen that one before, it's really good!

  • fantastic add

  • tá sé a ledgend. . :L

agus tá sé go haillain. . :L

now deres irish for ya . .:L

slán leat agus go raibh maith agat :D

  • Go ndéine Dia trócaire air! Legend

  • They forgot to add

    "Owner - Hungry Pig + McCoys - Carraigstown 2009 - Present"

  • True stuff.XD

  • Tom Crean was a hero. We don't know the meaning of the words "cold" and "pain".

  • The best ad Guinness have ever made by my opinion.

And,I believe I'm right in saying, that Tom Crean was played by the darling Alan Devine in this ad.

Tom Crean is an absolute epic man,and I take my hat off to him.(I'm wearing a hat by the way.)

  • Here here. A giant of a man. And modest as the day.

  • epic.

  • really whether he was british navy or whatever isn't really relevant to the ad, he opened a pub in kerry, so sings the song about kerry dances when the snow storm reminds him of guinness, they do make greeat ads.

  • I just read the book "An Unsung Hero", about Tom Crean - written by Michael Smith. I couldn't put it down. Unbelievable what the guy achieved - and he never spoke about his exploits with Scott and Shackleton!

I have to say the conditions in that ad seem mild compared to those often described in the book.

  • You are right there was no Irish navy then but there was an Irish Movement orginizations such as Conradh na Gaeilge, the GAA and the IRB. Tom was in the British Navy (armed forces) until 1920. Monumental times you'll agree. If he'd been sent to shell the GPO in 1916 he'd have done so!!!

  • He was loyal to Scott and Shackleton I think is the est wqay to put it. He's a perfect example of a hero. I think I remember reading the Black and Tans had him up agaisnt the wall of his pub to be shot until they found his medals inside. Not sure if that's true or not. That would've been a tragedy! He's unique in that he's a hero and an inspiration for both British and Irish people who aspire to do something extraordinary. Legend

  • @grryos Half of the Irish Volunteers (including Tom Barry) and all of the National Volunteers were also in the British Forces at some point or another. Doesn't mean they weren't patriotic towards Ireland!

  • He looks cold!!

  • Tom Crean was a member of the BRITISH navy

  • There was no IRISH navy back then!!....

  • Comment removed

  • @davidmagister doesnt mean there wasnt any ships pal

  • @zeppirl The Irish Navy didn't have any ships back then. It didn't exist!

  • @davidmagister a minor technicality to be sure....however.if st brendan could make it america's in 16th century. id bet an irish man could make it to one of the poles a bit later :P

  • @grryos yeah he's irish i'm irsh

  • @grryos many were forced because the brits promised a united ireland after WW1,but they lied

  • @grryos in 1912 Ireland was part of Britain ya spanner

  • this guy is mikes bro in fair city lol

  • thanks for letting us know

  • great add

  • Tom Crean is a giant amongst men and Guinness should be ashamed

  • When is this coing to England im peter

  • great ad com'on the kingdom

  • What a legend. Greatest ad ever. I love the sound of the ice cave creaking....

  • That ad tells a great story of one single man fighting a great, merciless force, who, at his lowest point, is inspired by his happy future. It was inspiring to se him rise up as if to say, "I will not die here, and not today. I'm going home." It shows the importance of warm imagery and having something to live for.

  • Brilliant, powerful add.

  • I'm his Great Great Great Niece!

  • Wow that's amazing! He was a great man. I recommend people read Capt Scott's diary of the expedition. First hand account of the whole adventure!

  • @LadyLauraTrevora Iv'e just been doing some reading about Tom Crean. I think he was also with Shackelton.

  • @barryperrins Yeah, he was, he went on the Endurance expedition.

  • what is the name of the song he is singing? does anybody know?

  • Its called the Kerry Dances

"Oh, the days of the Kerry dancing

Oh, the ring of the piper's tune

Oh, for one of those hours of gladness

Gone, alas, like our youth, too soon!"

  • wow, i just found your answer.

    thanks so much :)

  • That ad is an all time favorite. There's a wonderfulness to the simplicity of persistence and courage that this add shows which rises the hair on my neck and brings a tear to the eye...

  • that ad brought a tear to my eye.. when he started singing the song, and he stands up, just makes ya proud to be irish

  • Tom Crean. A man's man. I'm not keen on his name being used in Ads, but it was well done, and as said, raises his profile to a new generation.

The word Hero has been eroded so much by media and the US habit of every second person being called hero. Tom was a true hero from the heroic age.

  • Never saw that one !

    Thanks !

  • The man was a legend- adverts shouldn't exploit that. He saved lives because he was a great man, not because not because of Guinness.

  • Well in a way you are right. But this ad celebrates the life of a great man. He never achieved the recognition he deserved and this ad raises awareness. I think it's a good ad and a tribute to his determination and strength.

  • Fair enough :) I was a bit tired and emotional :)

The South Pole Inn interior in that looks like Dick Macks in Dingle though.

  • The pub is John Kavanaghs (aka The Gravediggers) in Glasnevin on Dublin's north side. I know this, because I work there. The exterior was filmed on a house two doors down from the pub. It's the same pub that was used in the Schillacci Smithwick's ads, et al.

  • Everyone intersetes in his life should read the book 'unsung hero', its fantastic

  • TOM CREAN IS MY GREAT GRANDADS COUSIN!! lol

  • oh my god really!!!

  • Serious?

He's related to me somehow too...I forgot what the connection was but, I'm called Eva CREAN.

  • Irelands bravest and best ambassador ever. Put other peoples lives before his

  • He really was a true hero. He was said to be a very modest man.

  • tom crean is class u don't get legends or explorers like that no more all on fuckin computers n shit

  • ahh, I was studying in Ireland during the whole 'Believe' campaign and used to love seeing this ad on TV (even got to visit the South Pole Inn while I was over there).. :-) Thanks for posting!

  • Some legend alright!...

  • Tom Crean = legend
