I'd never known of this man before this ad. Makes me even more proud that Irish blood runs through my veins, and proud that he was selfless and did what needed to be done.
Apparently the Black and Tans raided his gaf during the Rising. When they seen the Queens medals in his cabinet they shat themselves and left immediately.
Actually just finished reading the book about him yesterday, greatest book iv ever read, will read it again soon, his second expedition, the one this march is based on is the greatest feat by anyone ever let alone an Irish man, the greatest Irish man ever and should never be forgotten, ps he actually didn't like pulling pints in the end haha
This advert is an inspiration. It pays great homage to an Irish Hero. It essentially inspired me to continue my service in the Irish Defence forces. it reminded me that all hardships lead to something better. Even so, I believe that the modern Youth of Ireland should read the biography of Crean, to serve as direction for us all to achieve something great in our lifetime.
They are in no way in trouble. they are cutting costs to fit the current financial climate and balance supply and demand. The market out there is very tough but its plan to reduce costs is to help the long term sustainability of the brands and the business. Huge portfolio of top brands, Captain Morgans, Smirnoff, Gordons, Baileys, Bells, Johnnie Walker, Guinness, Bulleit, Moet, Blossom Hill, Bushmills,Tanquery. In a changing market staying still is the a recipe for disaster.
there cutting jobs for now but aint in trouble, diageo is moving its dundalk and killkenny brewerys eg: smitwicks harp. and moving to clondalkin which guinness will be made and james gate will brew guinness but not as much, guinness emailed me these plans last year because im subscribed to offers vouchers etc,
really whether he was british navy or whatever isn't really relevant to the ad, he opened a pub in kerry, so sings the song about kerry dances when the snow storm reminds him of guinness, they do make greeat ads.
I just read the book "An Unsung Hero", about Tom Crean - written by Michael Smith. I couldn't put it down. Unbelievable what the guy achieved - and he never spoke about his exploits with Scott and Shackleton!
I have to say the conditions in that ad seem mild compared to those often described in the book.
You are right there was no Irish navy then but there was an Irish Movement orginizations such as Conradh na Gaeilge, the GAA and the IRB. Tom was in the British Navy (armed forces) until 1920. Monumental times you'll agree. If he'd been sent to shell the GPO in 1916 he'd have done so!!!
He was loyal to Scott and Shackleton I think is the est wqay to put it. He's a perfect example of a hero. I think I remember reading the Black and Tans had him up agaisnt the wall of his pub to be shot until they found his medals inside. Not sure if that's true or not. That would've been a tragedy! He's unique in that he's a hero and an inspiration for both British and Irish people who aspire to do something extraordinary. Legend
@grryos Half of the Irish Volunteers (including Tom Barry) and all of the National Volunteers were also in the British Forces at some point or another. Doesn't mean they weren't patriotic towards Ireland!
@davidmagister a minor technicality to be sure....however.if st brendan could make it america's in 16th century. id bet an irish man could make it to one of the poles a bit later :P
That ad tells a great story of one single man fighting a great, merciless force, who, at his lowest point, is inspired by his happy future. It was inspiring to se him rise up as if to say, "I will not die here, and not today. I'm going home." It shows the importance of warm imagery and having something to live for.
That ad is an all time favorite. There's a wonderfulness to the simplicity of persistence and courage that this add shows which rises the hair on my neck and brings a tear to the eye...
Well in a way you are right. But this ad celebrates the life of a great man. He never achieved the recognition he deserved and this ad raises awareness. I think it's a good ad and a tribute to his determination and strength.
The pub is John Kavanaghs (aka The Gravediggers) in Glasnevin on Dublin's north side. I know this, because I work there. The exterior was filmed on a house two doors down from the pub. It's the same pub that was used in the Schillacci Smithwick's ads, et al.
ahh, I was studying in Ireland during the whole 'Believe' campaign and used to love seeing this ad on TV (even got to visit the South Pole Inn while I was over there).. :-) Thanks for posting!

Tom Crean. A man's man. I'm not keen on his name being used in Ads, but it was well done, and as said, raises his profile to a new generation.
The word Hero has been eroded so much by media and the US habit of every second person being called hero. Tom was a true hero from the heroic age.
ind347 3 years ago 2
