statistics show that blacks usually study buisness, law, medicine if they go to college. They take jobs with money and power. Few go for teaching or social services.
A Different World was in touch with issues and real life back then. It was also one of the main reasons a lot of black students attended Historical Black Colleges in the 80s and 90s. They weren't allowed to say words like "date rape" or "condoms" but issues were addressed. I LOVE this show!!!!
can anyone explain why the lyrics (as posted on several online sources) read "It's A Different World Form Where you come from"? FORM? I never hear this really pronounced in any of the versions (pheobe, aretha, boyzIImen) but it seems to be the acurate lyric .... is there some folk / rural meaning I'm missing?
@mrsalvinseville If you're talking about why Lisa Bonet left A Different World it's because her & Bill Cosby had a confrontation that was never resolved after her starring in the movie "Angel Heart" (rumor has it that that was the reason) According to Wikipedia though, she left because she was pregnant.
Wow lmao as many times as i watch this show i just realized that is Tatiana Thumbtzen. She has a very unique beautiful face. She use to be a model until she got obsessed with Michael, but who isnt. Lol its funni cause Michael use to date whitley aka Jasmine Guy. Thats why she was in his video for Liberian Girl. I wonder if Tatiana liked Jasmine?
man.. this is when humor was real and real audience were there
now all we have is cheesy ass jokes on tv that's not even funny nor serious..
the audience would laugh at anything -_- and it seems like that all the audiences laughter sounds all the same on every teen/-supposibly-funny-show...SMFH
I used to love this show but looking back, Whitley aka Jasmine Guy is so annoying on the show. I can't tolerate her. She and Dwayne used to be my favorite characters.
I was born in 1985 and Thank God I grew up watching shows that not only made us laugh but they actually related to the lives of the everyday ppl. Have u noticed that in shows like A Different World & Family Matters every episode has a lesson that gets well learned bcuz no matter the problems they face they always come together in the end. Now when I see my 8yr old niece watchn shows like icarly and that's so Raven I shake my head bcuz I know she will never get 2 experience GOOD TV like I did
@erika2012vsu Its hard for any show to represent the entire African American community, because al all black people are not the same. The issue is we need more shows. Shows like The Game and "Let's Stay Together" lead to other shows. However, if you don't watch them but tune into trashy reality shows in high numbers, you give TV executives the impression that it's what you want to see on television. I catch some of the Girlfriends reruns on BET and I don't get the big hoorah, maybe becuz im a guy
@onemandynasty012 in my opinion I think Lets Stay Together has the potential. Like Girlfriends and the Game they had a rocky first season. I do watch the game. But it's sad that blacks haven't dominate the sitcom airwaves in a while. and there's only two major shows that represent us/
@onemandynasty012 I would like to see a show about a black guy that is just about his life, that's all. It seems that every show on TV starring a black person has to be culture-centric., How about a sitcom about a black guy that watches anime and doesn't make jokes about how he acts or doesn't act "black".
@Psychology Nothing is wrong with a black guy watching Anime.. The problem is that society has put black people in a box to make them seem as if they are all the same. If that's your idea then run with it, I just want to see a balance is all
@onemandynasty012 I agree. There is always the one extreme with black characters and it never deviates from that. I'm black myself and understand that certain black people act certain ways but on the flip side, certain black people act others ways. Not all black people are the same. We are all individuals and act unique, yet every show has black characters acting the same way.
@Psychology but whether we choose to admit it, in some cases this is because society views black people as the same... some people believe that any black person can give you a detailed synopsis on the black experience.. However, there are some people out there who seem to go out of their way to prove that they are not "like" other black people, instead of saying yes I'm black, but there are other aspects of my life that define who I am as a person.
I remember this show would come on after Saved By The Bell when I was in fifth grade. I would purposely stay home to watch it and have to haul ass to the bus stop down the street after it went off.
@BabyGirlGoddess I agree 8 seasons of Girlfrends.. it was trully a great show. I'm glad BET is running it in sydication. maybe one day they'll get series finale or possibly movie.
I wonder if a new show like this would do well... we need a show like this, of course the issues would be different, but we're seriously lacking quality tv... BET is really trying for once but we have become so consumed with reality tv shows that we can't tell the difference between good and bad ... I admit I use to watch Flavor of Love, College Hill, I Love NY, and shows like that, but after awhile they just kept on shoving more in our faces so I watch none today if I can help it
Ah the 90's, the Twilight of good primetime television and when real life issues were so raw and tackled on these shows. I am honored to have been a kid during that decade. Thumbs up if you agree!
@MmmScruplez When I bought my glasses, I actually found a pair like the ones Dwayne Wayne had. My cousin was with me at the time, and when I made the Dwayne Wayne reference, she said, "Who's Dwayne wayne?" I had to take her home and show her VHS tapes of this show. Today's generation wouldn't know good TV if it bit them in the ass.
It's like I'm a kid again! I still get sooooo excited when I hear the song. I just wanna slide around the floor like James Brown an say HEEEEEEEY!!!! lmao
after cosby been on air for many of years...different world came about...ms denise...who cannot forget her...whitley and dwayne and rerun...hahaha sooooooooooooooo funny but yet again another classic...this was an awesome show....and shall forever be remembered as one of the greatest shows ever...
I personally wouldn't object to a spin off. The children in college could be the kids of Whtley,Dwaye,Freddie, etc. It could showcase how times have changed, but how somethings have stayed the same. Kids stll face problems in college in the 21st century, but there is more technology.
@DaVoYAGA7 we need some type of show that focuses on college life, I can't really think of a show on tv today that would inspire me to go to college if I was a kid growing up ... definitely not any black ones, but if I did a show I would do it from another perspective like black kids at PWI.... because there are definitely experiences there
One day when I get a chance I'm gonna sit down and watch every season lol. They just don't make shows like this anymore! I'm in college and I think it will be a good pick me up lmao.
This show is 5 years older than me but i can still remember my mom watching it when i was a young child, like 3,4 or 5 lol. And I like this theme waaay better than the first one they had.
I LOVE IT!!! I hate it when a 90's show comes on & I start singing around someone my age they pretend to act clueless. I'll be 25 September, they act like they have amnesia or certain things were so old, idiots! Hell the early 90's is not some ancient time in history, way better than now. I see no reason why someone my age or a yr. older would NOT know the show or@ least the damn theme to, "Diff. World, Living Single, In Living Color, Arsenio Hall, ROC, South Central LA" & etc. Thank You NSROKA.
@blairaaa Pay close attention to 0:12 to 0:14. You see that blue vertical bar that represents a division of rooms? That's how they pasted the scenes together seamlessly. Once you notice it, you realize it's not that difficult.
Even the scenes where it's two instances of one person are easy to do. Record the person reacting to something that isn't there, then record the person in a separate place in the exact same place as before.
Out of all the versions of the song, I still think Aretha Franklin did it best. I was only like 3-4 when this show first came out but it was the only theme song I could sing at the time. I miss shows like this.
I missed positive black tv sitcoms such as this show!!!! Now we are just non-existent from television, well...unless you count the many SENSELESS reality shows .
@dellculookin it's BET's fault when Bob johnson sold out to viacom then that damn Debra Lee came and sent it straight to hell giving crackhead shows Jumpoffs and baby momma's shows and dont get me started on 106 and park and VH1 do that shit because we let them until we say fuck the bullshit and get on this stations with petitions and things like that it'll stay the same
@TheCinnamon1997 Forreal! I mean I liked Denise, but having had the first season revolving around her was a TERRIBLE idea. This show made a drastic improvement when she was gone, particularly because the show became about the entire cast and college life.
@slickricklj Well I liked the first season and it was meant to focus on her since it was the intention of it being a spinoff. Besides, the whole thing didn't always revolve around her. There were some moments with the other characters too.
@harriettewinslow Those moments with the other characters were nothing compared to when the show got revamped. The problem with Denise was her character had to play it safe because she was a Huxtable kid, and thus didn't really grow much and could be the least interesting. Season 1 had safe and soft moments and not much excitement compared to what the show became. You can have a central character, but the others should have alot of focus and not be the main ones providing the laughs.
Oh, I used to love this show to DEATH. Like, I remember the very first episode and everything. (I'm only 19 by the way, but my mom was also a really big fan) so yeah. LOVED. THIS.
Especially the episode when En Vogue showed up, and the afro-dance show where Whitley found out that her great great something or other owned slaves. Yep! LOVE IT.
I have always and forever will love this show! I remember being six years old and watching this show every night. Honestly, if it wasn't for the views of A Different World, I would not be attending college to this day. I must say television programs today do not influenece race, mainly African-Americans to further their education beyond high school. But thanks to TV One for bringing back such a wonderful show!
i have a question. why is the boyz 2 men version of the opening nowhere to be found? there is a "montage" and it's playing the song but not the actual sequence, just bits and pieces of it. that's so annoying! i wanna see it it reminds me of beign a kid
This show, The Cosby Show, Family Matters, and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air was the shows I would watch constanly and remember watching when I was little, and I won't hit twenty until March 18.
Good question I think this show only played on Nick for like 2 weeks it seem then they cut it off. I saw The Cosby Show on Nick last week at 5 in the morning. Family Matters still come on Nick just at 6 in the morning. Then Fresh Prince.....well they probably cut because you can catch that show on TBS, Toon Disney, ABC family, and others.
I remember when this premiered. It was a big deal for us as black folk. A lot of people say this show led to them going to college. One of the best shows ever.
@RoyalHustler09 Because Nick@Night is to worried about playing shows that just ended 3 years ago. I remember when they use to play the black and white shows, then they moved it to the more contemporary yet old shows...ah hell, tv is just full of shit now lol!
i love this song lol everytime it comes on i sing along no matter what and i LOVEEEE the last part of the song "from where you come FROMMM!" lol. so is this a actual song or just a theme song?
oh man, I never watched the show but I loved the opening! I wonder if this was filmed in the same studio as Elton john's "I don't wanna go on with you like that" video
A lot of soul in that voice.

Easy.

The opening credits where they are washing the car outside are still the best. I believe that was season 1? But I'm not 100% sure. Ah, memories.

TheCinnamon1997 1 year ago
@TheCinnamon1997 Forreal! I mean I liked Denise, but having had the first season revolving around her was a TERRIBLE idea. This show made a drastic improvement when she was gone, particularly because the show became about the entire cast and college life.
slickricklj 1 year ago
@slickricklj Well I liked the first season and it was meant to focus on her since it was the intention of it being a spinoff. Besides, the whole thing didn't always revolve around her. There were some moments with the other characters too.
harriettewinslow 1 year ago
@harriettewinslow Those moments with the other characters were nothing compared to when the show got revamped. The problem with Denise was her character had to play it safe because she was a Huxtable kid, and thus didn't really grow much and could be the least interesting. Season 1 had safe and soft moments and not much excitement compared to what the show became. You can have a central character, but the others should have alot of focus and not be the main ones providing the laughs.

I wasn't into this show back in the day but that's a nice opening sequence

Oh, I used to love this show to DEATH. Like, I remember the very first episode and everything. (I'm only 19 by the way, but my mom was also a really big fan) so yeah. LOVED. THIS.
Especially the episode when En Vogue showed up, and the afro-dance show where Whitley found out that her great great something or other owned slaves. Yep! LOVE IT.
Indiegirl007 1 year ago
I have always and forever will love this show! I remember being six years old and watching this show every night. Honestly, if it wasn't for the views of A Different World, I would not be attending college to this day. I must say television programs today do not influenece race, mainly African-Americans to further their education beyond high school. But thanks to TV One for bringing back such a wonderful show!

i have a question. why is the boyz 2 men version of the opening nowhere to be found? there is a "montage" and it's playing the song but not the actual sequence, just bits and pieces of it. that's so annoying! i wanna see it it reminds me of beign a kid

I wonder why Nick @ Night stop playing this?
This show, The Cosby Show, Family Matters, and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air was the shows I would watch constanly and remember watching when I was little, and I won't hit twenty until March 18.
RoyalHustler09 1 year ago 26
Good question I think this show only played on Nick for like 2 weeks it seem then they cut it off. I saw The Cosby Show on Nick last week at 5 in the morning. Family Matters still come on Nick just at 6 in the morning. Then Fresh Prince.....well they probably cut because you can catch that show on TBS, Toon Disney, ABC family, and others.
