There is a lot going on behind the scenes, that means a lot to this scene, Sauron thought Pippin had the ring because he used the Palantir, so when Gandalf takes him to Minas Tirith, he took him so Sauron would be distracted, then when Aragorn uses the Palantir, he thinks Aragorn has it, so when Aragorn marches on the Black Gate, Sauron thinks he's won, when he saw Frodo and Sam, in the book it describes that Sauron didn't concentrate enough on him, so Sauron was tricked unintentionally.

Don't forget how weak the ring makes people/hobbits/whatever. Look at Smeagol (sp?). He was a normal being until the ring made him all thin, powerless and ghastly. By this time he had the ring for many months so he must have been not only weak but tired from traveling as well. Of course, Samwise deserves far more credit than he gets and he is just as important as Frodo is.
