Before today I saw this only once, when it was broadcasted 1984. I knew and liked him before, but this concert - with Cale crawling under the piano - was unforgettable (like Mitch Ryder's legendary "Full Moon Concert", also an everlasting highlight of the Rockpalast nights). Sometimes hostile audiences provoke extreme intense performances.
This is halfway through the 84 gig, the crowd (mainly Level 42 & Huey Lewis fans) getting hostile after Cale was having some of his ´experimental` outbursts. Fear & Streets Of Laredo, both I´ve also uploaded and which are well worth watching. There´s also a short explanation I´ve posted, it´s on John Cale - An interview of sorts, uploaded by JohnOne82. In contrast there´s the 83 gig in front of an adept crowd.
that second version was pretty strange. what the hell was he doing, pulling out carpet tiles and throwing equipment around? spectacular to see though. the only version of heartbreak hotel that i like.
This is brilliant!

it doesn't come much better - or emotionally 'damaged' - as this brilliant version!

The 2nd video should be shown in schools to highlight the damaging effects of drugs...

@MightyAlz yes , He is totally "gone" but still a great artist and performer. Cale is clean and fit these days which is good to know.

Second version of one from wittiest and scariest Cale´s Heartbreak Hotel. Point is that Cale could play it erratic. Till now
