ppl that say that he risked to much must think befor they say somthink, its just as dangerus as taking a ride with car to your job. and he died doing what he ejoyed and thats an honorabel death . and he died becaus when he was doing a base jump he couldn't open one of the ski's and that made hem to spin! its liek a brakes vould fail on your car! shane you have left us a lot of think to remeber you by r.i.p.
i'm also a skier and i can't amagin a death more honorabel for me as hes!
to other posters: he left this world doing what he loved. the crocodile hunter died doing what he loved as well. did people criticize him for that? no. his daughter does exactly what he did, and i think McConkey's daughter will follow in her daddy's foot steps. any profession can cause death. if his time was up, then it was up. stop being so rude and respect this family during their time of mourning.
Well said Sarah....RIP Shane, you changed the skiing world and will be remembered for all of your accomplishments and style both on and off the hill.....
To die doing what you love is the best way to go. it's sad his family, friends, and peers will no longer be able to ski with him, or enjoy the stunts he did, or have him around. but he went out doing what he loved, much respect, you'll be missed greatly.
Shane was a professional. He did everything in his power to eliminate the risk associated with the stunts he pulled. He was not crazy. He was highly skilled, calculated and precise in everything he did. But s#!t happens and at least he died doing what he loved.
To his family and friends... I'm sorry for your loss, but as you know you have an entire community of support behind you.
From the top of KT22 to the bottom of my heart, RIP Shane.

People have asked, "Is it worth it getting hurt that much" and Shane McConkey exclaims, "Yes!"
The real question is, was it worth dying at such a young age with a small child who will now have to grow up and never know her daddy? Was it really truly worth it after all? Well I guess it's too late to look back now.
It has always amazed me those who seek out their death. You keep searching for it and its gonna find you sooner than you hoped for.

I feel sorry the guy died. He might have been a great skier, and adventurous spirit and all. But...what about his little daughter? Who will be her father now? I feel most sorry for her, as she's the one that has to live her life picking up the tab for his adventures. How sad that he was focused more on skiing, and not her.

I've skiid plenty. I just value my children more than placing their father in harm's way for an adrenaline high. We all make choices in life. Some people just choose to place their family first.
McConkey might have been the nicest, greatest dude on earth. Which makes the decision he made to go after the adrenaline, rather than be there for his family, even more tragic.
How do you think his daughter will feel at her HS graduation? Wedding? Do u think she'll be thinking skiing or I miss dad?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
One last thing: What do you think were the last things going through his mind as he knew he was going? I would venture it wasn't "man, I wish I had done more of this!" I would bet it was more along the lines of "my daughter...my wife..."
I have no truck against McConkey. I just feel bad for a little girl that now has no father, and who will be scarred for the remainder of her life. All this was absolutely avoidable. Just hit some Black Diamonds, or something a bit less dangerous.
Stop using the McConkey family's tragedy as affirmation of your own chickensh-- attitude towards life. Time runs out for everyone, whether it is on a ventilator at 94 with a doting family surrounding you or alone under a bridge with a needle in your arm at 16. One should be so lucky to sign off doing that which defined an entire life.

Yes, I'm sure his daughter will be real happy with that thought. Daddy abandoned me because he really needed to ski. Hate to break it to you, but THAT is the chikens$it attitude. Grow up! One can only hope you do not have children.
He did not abandon his daughter. He was doing his f**ing job earning money for his family. He just was one of the people who even likes his job very much. You have no right to judge him for that.
You cant make assumptions without knowing the facts. go read some of the articles on him. everything was calculated out, he was not being reckless, he was doing his job that he loved. only a true skier knows what its like to nail that perfect run, and the feeling is better than anything in the whole world.
Well, in his own words, "It's not 'what we do', it's who we are".
Guys like this are cut from a different cloth. You cannot put them in the same box that mere mortals like you and I live in. Often they burn so white hot that bad things happen. The guy was incredible - his family and friends deserve respect and warm thoughts, not this.

honestly
his family was everything to him
and u have no proof to back that up even in the begining u see him with his daughter
true i do feel most bad for his family
he made the money and put the food on the table just like any father would at WORK
this is his job and his life
if u even think that he focused too much on skiing
get a life and learn how to ski
youll understand
