These words are in Latin and they are used at High Holy Masses for the Dead (Roman Catholic) or what we now call Funeral Masses. It means, literally ,"Mass for the Dead" It was a Chant said during a funeral, and it was asking God (through the intercession of Mary and the Saints) to save the souls in Purgatory. Particularly the soul of the person the Mass is being said for.
