i just purchase the wright and mcgill sabalos 4000 reel

its a 4.8:1 gear ratio. can you explain to me if the 4.8 gear ratio good for lure fishing such as crankbait,jerbait,jigging..etc

Reeling speed is much more crucial on the angler than the fish. 4.8 to low 5's is about as fast as spinning reels get. That being said its better to keep in mind what you need that lure to do then match your speed accordingly. Since your using a spinning rod for all of these lures I would make sure to use nothing less then a 7' rod in a fast action. Longer length gives leverage and you can get better hook sets from long range. Put on 30lb braid and learn to use leaders.

why did u say 4.8- low 5s is the fastest on spinning reel?

im ordering the ugly stik big water 7', medium action, 10-25lb line, lure 1/2-3oz

Faster gear ratios do pick up line faster but its not relative to your lures. A 4.8 can move a bait as fast or as slow as you want. The only true reason for higher end speeds is catching up to a fish running at you once hooked or picking up line fast to recast back to a strike zone. I use 7.1 bait casting reels for most of my bass fishing strictly for the purpose of hitting as many targets as possible and fast with limited time.

When casting smaller lures & using weightless soft plastics you cant beat a spinning rod. Lots of people like to think there is a magic rod that does everything and unfortunately that's not the case. Spinning outfits are designed for sensitivity being the line resistance is on the eyes only but they like pulling power. Baitcasters are designed for power & accuracy not so much sensitivity. Plus spinning casting distance is better but less accurate. Hope this helps you out some. Best of Fishin!

@timmytrooper141 ya dude i always have a spinning reel and baitcaster with me. another thing is baitcasters are much stronger than spinning reels and can hold heavier line. all with being at a smaller size than a spinning reel with equal strength. bass pros use baitcasters because time is the difference between life or death. so they use the baitcasters for precision casting heavy line and they just yank the bass in they dont battle with the fish

I am really looking into getting the pflueger president 6740 for light inshore shalt water fishing as well as in my backyard freshwater lake. Do you think the president will do fine when used lightly in saltwater.

Line diameter, 25lb is thicker than 10lb a simple way to think of it is wrap a rope around the spool, you might only get a few inches of length.

Closing the bail with the handle can and will ruin the bail springs in the bail near the roller where the line goes over time the are hard to find in stores to replace i had this happen to 2 of my reels but they were both $50 reels

I tried my first casting today and I didnt feel secure when casting, I feel like that if I cast too hard, the left-over fish line on reel will all come out like a loop together and make a mess. Is it thats why you use a finger to control when casting stop??

unless you're using top-of-the-line reel, you should close the bail with your hand for two reasons: #1, it will help the reel last longer and #2, it will reduce line twist.

Am on the way to Gus's discount tackle in SF tomorrow to buy my first surf rod and reel.

Have been wanting to venture into surf fishing for several months now and your vids turned up the fire. Keep em coming!

If I may make a suggestion, I'm having a difficult time finding out what is good eats out of the surf. Perhaps a primer on local species and what is worth taking home for the plate. (hell if I know how to clean a skate!)

Lol use the cookie cutters on the skates just like bat rays,, Striped bass & rubber lip surf perch are my personal favorites when it comes to surf fishing... I love to eat pan fish so when I am on them that's about all i fish for lol

hi, i have a mini reel like the smallest one you've shown, i would like to put some 10 pound line on it but i dont know if it can handle it, the only thing it says on the reel is 4lbs/100yds ....so idk. usually i use my baitcast reels i dont really like openface but it would be nice if you could tell me, thanks =)

80yds of 6lb would be about max, or 60yds of 8lb but if you learn to master your drag right you can land 4lb fish on 2 to 4lb test. Lots oh people stress about the tiny line but its truly a ton of fun to fish!

i usually use 8lb stren line but i recently bought a spool of 10 just to try it, im going back to 8.lol 10lb memory is higher than what it says but i got 330 yards of 10 so im just going to go ahead and use it all up, thanks for the tips

anti-reverse for a spinning reel includes ratchet teeth formed on an inner peripheral surface of a rotary frame attached to a front face of a reel body, for engaging the ratchet teeth for preventing the rotary frame from rotating backward in a line releasing direction, and a drive element for changing the pawls between an operative position to engage the ratchet teeth and an inoperative position retracted from the ratchet teeth.

my sons new reel (Zebco), similar to the small u you showed is now spinning/spooling in both directions regardless of the drag being on/off or the tension of the drag...any suggestions as to how i can fix/correct what wrong with it...many thx's
