The taxpayer "protection" pledge is unrealistic. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do! And if that means raising taxes, even if just a few percent, on the wealthiest Americans who CAN afford it, and from who we lost so much damn tax revenue from 2001 til now after the tax cuts that would've surely reduce the deficit by a bunch, so be it.
Sure, we'd all love lower taxes, but sometimes gov't needs to pick up the revenue shortfalls. I'm for cutting spending, but washington won't do that.
@whoo689 Until Washington grows the balls to start cutting spending in meaningful ways, if we can raise taxes by just a small percentage to help reduce the deficits and hopefully be able to pay down the national debt, in as painless a manner as possible, WHY NOT?
We should strive to balance budgets and keep taxes as low as possible, but every so often, a small tax increase may be necessary, esp. in a recession when revenues are down because of lost economic activity.
@whoo689 The absolutist no-compromise position of "no higher taxes", if even only 1%, is unrealistic and absurd. I don't think even the Founders would agree with it.
And isn't it a little funny how the same people who bitch about taxes got all up-in-arms who Tim Geithner or Tom Daschle supposedly "cheating on their taxes"?? That sounds hypocritical if you ask me.
@whoo689 If you'll recall, American taxes are some of the LOWEST in the industrialized world. You want REAL high taxes? Go to Western Europe. We lowered them a LOT in the Reagan era, and yet you STILL bitch and complain. How much is the "correct" tax for you? 5%? 10%? 0??
As much as we all hate paying taxes, taxes are an important part of living in a society with a gov't that provides necessary services like schools, firefighters, police protection, military, etc.
