Is this amp good to play like Metallica songs? and should i buy it used or no? or what amp do you guys recommend to play Metallica songs and music close to Metallica?
@289danny vox's arent metal amps by any means...if you're looking for smaller budget amps look at roland cubes, marshall mgs, ibanez tbx, or something of that sort. If you wanna spend $1k+ and get a JCM2000 with an overdrive pedal like mine though you can get a metal sound quite easily. But if not I recommend looking into those 3 amp lines.

I'm using a Fender Telecaster baja with this same amp, and the sound is too much treble even when i put it very low (treble) i tried to put a little bit more gain and less volume and still get's too much that acoustic sound.. Fantastic with the gibson es-335 thought...
I own this amp, its probably good at the oldschool rock/blues sound, but since im a metal player i do not like this amp. NOTE: IF YOU ARE A METAL GUITARIST DONT BUY THIS AMP!!!! dont know about the other style other than that it has a nice clean sound.
i have had this amp for quite a long fuckin time and have never head that kind of tone out of it lol i always used a pedal with mine but i recently discovered its awsome for stoner doom metal with the bass and gain all the way up and boost button on too
For those considering this amp, its a really good practice amp with a pretty good clean tone. I personally use it with my Digitech RP500 so I can't necessarily comment on the fuzz onboard the amp.
The onboard amp's fuzz is OK, a bit muddy, yes, but the balls out all gain setting is not bad. I prefer the clean though. The clean is a bit treble-y but then again, its a Vox amp so what did you expect :D ?
@aripck the mustang has way more effects/ sounds, like it can do metal, classic rock, alternative, blues and jazz, but like it looks like vox doesnt have as big of a range but has a better sound in its range
i've gone thru listening to every type of music. gone full circle to only blues n blues/rock will do. creamy fuzz.xxxxx. if he tried metal on this i'da switched off
@sunp@planet9 I have nothing against classic blues I.g Robert Johnson but I just cant stand tacky modern blues that kills it's own genre. And dont even get me started on Heavy Metal. All I'm saying is that I want to here what the amp sounds for something alternative.
@stratsrul I was considering which amp I should sell 'cause I had 2. I played my Vox Pathfinder 15R through my Orange 12" speaker cab and it sounded real nice. So I sold my Orange Tiny Terror set up (worth $1200) and kept the little Vox (cost $200).......
i got this amp for bout 120 dollars bout 4 months back. its a very nice amp, just listening to it it sounds just like a tube amp. very nice warm tone, VERY nice clean channel, tremelo effect is a beauty and works very well, reverb is good but adds noise, the boost channel(distortion) is very good(not great or perfect) but very good(just get a pedal for this). this is a beautiful amp in looks as well, EXTREMELY loud, makes the walls and ground vibrate...believe me, ask my neighbors. lol 9.3/10
I have this amp and really like it. It has a very nice clean tone. The reverb and tremelo sound great. I've been thinking about changing the speaker to a higher quality alnico one, but it sounds great stock. Nice amp for 100 bucks.
@pogmotho1n: I've opened up, modded, and repaired these amps, and there's *no* digital signal processing at all. Just straight analog (though solid-state) technology :)
@pogmotho1n: I've opened up, modded, and repaired these amps. There is *no* digital signal processing in them. Just straight analog (solid state) technology. The "chips" inside are analog op-amps and power transistors, with LEDs being used for the overdrive effect.

@Amaroan1 put it this way, for around $100 US it's not gonna make you sound any worse lol... as long as the guitar tunes and intonation is good, what more can you ask for? :)
Definitely worth picking one up imo,,, I have one of these for practicing in my bedroom, gotta say clean it really sounds great. Boost... not really loving it, but with a tube distortion pedal sounds awesome. (I play with the one from gutarfetish, google it if you're interested... was about $70 or so)
I haven't played on one of the AC 4 amps but they look great. Apparently there is no line output jack and you don't get any reverb or tremelo like in the Pathfinder. The AC4 TV also goes for $249.99 in Musicians Friend. Thats's more than double the price of a Pathfinder ($119.99). I don't think there is much to compare other than they are both made by VOX.
@picajoool The pathfinder is great, but the ac4tv sounds way better i love both, but if u want true tone the ac4tv is better no trem or verb but if u got pedals your cool, If i where u id get the tv, If your use to warm sounds blues jazz rock etc.
okay i bought one of these amps, im new at the whole electric guitar thing so what does the reverb do, i turn the dial and it doesnt seem to change anything.or maybe i dont know what its changing.
I recorded a demo with this amp. I used it mostly for clean tones and for distortion I used a Boss SuperOverdrive SD-1. I only used this Amp with Boost and max gain for a solo in a song and sounded great. My friends told me that it sounds like I am playing a 100W tube head amp with a 1x12 cabinet.
The Vox 15R is definitely solid state. The thing that helps Vox is they put the money into the amp. Very simple, straight forward, no cheap effects or stuff that you will never use. A lot of small amps have a much higher price with cheesy effects that you will never use either live or on a recording. The Vox has a solid sound. Go to a local music store and compare the small amps under $200.00. There are many choices but for me it was no contest, it was the Vox 15R.
I use the Vox with different guitars depending on the club and type of music. An Epiphone Sheridan, a Fender Telecaster or my old 1976 Ibanez Les Paul in larger "rock" rooms. When I have room for in the places we play (you know how that goes) I also use an Ibanez Acoustic/Electric sounds very big. I should add I use an old Boss ME-30 programmable effects pedal so I have certain banks are set up for different guitars. The Ibanez uses a very clean setting with highs added and some light chorus.
I have one and it turned out to be a very good amp for its price range. The only dislike I have is when I plug it to a PC for recording sessions. It's hard to get really treble/edgy tones. I guess must get a session mike in order to capture the real sound of this amp, the one heard when playing live
I have been playing live with this amp for about four years now. It has never let me down. It is great in smaller rooms. In bigger rooms I run into a cab with a 12 inch speaker and the line out into the PA system for more balance. I'm sure it depends on what kind of music you play but I play classic rock and often just lighter music in restaurant/bars with my band. This is a great amp.
One additional note to add. I have not been very gentle with my Pathfinder and in the 4 years of abuse that it has suffered at my hands it has never had a problem. I did put some gold corner pieces on it since I chewed up the corners badly. I recommend that to anyone with the Pathfinder. The output on the "line out" is dead quiet so don't be afraid to use it.
I disagree with Europe Factor. I had the Roland 20X. I gave it up for this Pathfinder 15R. In a home or studio the Cube is great but IMHO there is no comparison to the sound when used live in a small club. The Pathfinder is much more "present" and fatter sounding and disperses the sound better.
I saw Norah Jones playing through one of these on the Colbert Report...just a soft ballad song but it was cool to see someone playing one live with a mic on it...
This amp fucking sucks on distortion haha I have it, but it's pretty good for the price. Bought it off a friend for about 80 bucks. Amazing clean tones, I'll admit though.
i tried this amp out with a schecter c-1 diamond series guitar, that has active duncan designed pickups and a licensed floyd. and i gotta say, im really impressed with that amp and the guitar. gotta love the distortion. its great for hard rock and meta.
my pathfinder 15 doesnt get the clean setting......... only gain and overdrive and they sound horrible...... also the treble doesnt seem to work.... if you know what to do please pm me thanks alot.
i have one and i think it's a great amp for practicing and recording....i my opinion it sounds better than the marshall amps in this size.....especially for that prize (in germany 65€) it's totally worthwhile!
I'd get the Crate. 5 tube watts should easily be as loud as 15 solid state watts and if you don't like the tone of an amp, there's not much you can do with a solid state but change the speaker. With the tube amp you can change the speaker AND the tubes to increase or decrease the gain structure if you like. More flexible for you anyway-good luck.
The Crate V Series 5 watt will need lots of modding to sound good. I got one on clearance and had to do tons of modding to get decent tones out of it. They're a decent platform for a modder, but for a practice amp I'd recommend the Vox.
Dude, shut up. That Pathfinder 15R is one of the best solid states amps ever made. Someone people prefer a good solid state tone over tubes for certain things....even Jimmy Page and the Beatles used a solid state Vox occassionally.
ouch, I liked Dime's sound, to each their own I suppose, for what he played it sounded good. The JC-120 sounds good, most Rolands do, I have a Cube 30x and love the thing to death. Looking to grab a tube soon though, probably AC15, or Fender Blues Deluxe/or JR
@KnockYouOutCold pics or it didn't happen. I've made better sounds taking a shit than those that could be produced by the solid state amplifiers of the 60s ans 70s.
The MG series, in my opinion is underrated. Clean is nothing special, but crank the distortion, role the tone all the way off, and you have instant thrash. For anything but metal, though, Pathfinder all the way.
i'm trying to get the slash tone but i can't seem to get it with my vox and my mark tremonti PRS series. i'm using a boss metal zone anyway.
can anyone help me out with the setting of t he amp?
do drop me an email at yeo_gary@hotmail.com

anyone thinks the pathfinder 10 is any good?
kopures 2 years ago
i have one and i think it's a great amp for practicing and recording....i my opinion it sounds better than the marshall amps in this size.....especially for that prize (in germany 65€) it's totally worthwhile!

i got one, best practice amp i've ever owned :) but thinking of trading it in plus a bit of cash for one of these...

should i get this vox or the crate v series 5 tube amp
LamoAndBestfriend 2 years ago

KnockYouOutCold 2 years ago 2
dimebag played solid-state randalls forever until going to krank right before his death rip dime
miller434 2 years ago
But Dimes tone sucked tbh.
Roland JC-120 is a great solid state amp. Kustom makes some great solid state amps as well.
Guitarhero9901 2 years ago 2
ouch, I liked Dime's sound, to each their own I suppose, for what he played it sounded good. The JC-120 sounds good, most Rolands do, I have a Cube 30x and love the thing to death. Looking to grab a tube soon though, probably AC15, or Fender Blues Deluxe/or JR
miller434 2 years ago
@KnockYouOutCold pics or it didn't happen. I've made better sounds taking a shit than those that could be produced by the solid state amplifiers of the 60s ans 70s.

Ive got this amp...it sounds better when u chuck the 8" speaker for a 10"....takes some work but its WAY worth it.

How come the distortion sounds so nice in this demo but terrible in the other one?
randomguitarnerd 2 years ago 5
I'm pretty sure that the mic was clipping in the other one. Mic clipping=shit tone.
Chumleh 2 years ago
wich is best: Marshall MG15 CDR or Vox Pathfinder 15R
deathracca 2 years ago
definitely this because this one can have an 8 ohm speaker added
GibsonLesPaul1319 2 years ago
The MG series, in my opinion is underrated. Clean is nothing special, but crank the distortion, role the tone all the way off, and you have instant thrash. For anything but metal, though, Pathfinder all the way.

One of the best solid state amp sounds ever!!!!!!

Is a Line 6 SPIDER III amp better than this, or does this amp own the crap out of the Line 6 Spider?
fauxhawker 2 years ago
This amp is better than the spider.
jacobjj12 2 years ago 2
like the last guy said-I'd go with the vox-not the Spider- just my personal opinion.
H0LL0WBELLY 2 years ago
Heard its only for classical rock. It has the tone. Not for punk rock and metal stuff..
fauxhawker 2 years ago
I like the VOX more, cuz ypu can plug in effects and it sounds like heaven ;)
hubbalol 2 years ago
I don't buy pedals, YET. Cos I'm still a beginner. I'm buying them, like in 2 years, or 3. So, for now, I need a good practice amp. That is all.
fauxhawker 2 years ago

panicbow14 3 years ago
