music taste depends on many things, first of all age. i don't know how old is wargrave but i think he was a teenger between the '60 and the '70. if we ask a teenager today about the best album ever, answers will be completely different. in second place everyone has a fav genre, so someone could put metal, hip hop or jazz records in the top of the list. no one has a definitive answer, simply because it doesn't exist
I can't believe Bat Out Hell by Meatloaf isn't on anyones list! That album is freaking amazing! Everybody has way too much Beatles, Beach Boys, and Pink Floyd in the "best albums ever" lists. There needs to be more variety, the Beatles are beginning to be a little too overrated.
Hmmmm. Not bad at all, although you seem to not be a huge fan of female vocalists, huh? And I think it's a bit Beach Boy heavy, for sure. But obviously this type of list is subjective. Thanks for posting.
@Riff28Raff That's right my boy, but I still don't like AC/DC and I hate when people try to defend themselves using "this album sold this much" as an excuse for lack of argument.
@Riff28Raff AC/DC were good when Bon Scott was around now they're just a boring washed up cliche Hard Rock band with zero creativity I mean really they aren't good anymore
@blackeyed72 are you a complete dousche? the beatles are one of the greatist bands of all time. theres a reason its old albums and bands and thats because todays music is terrible and todays bands cant make anything worth listening to. todays music is crap, the beach boys and the beatles are greats that will live on forever.
@blackeyed72 i havent heard a single song from 2000s that is worth listening to. all thats made today is crap music made to make an easy buck. not like back in the day when people actually cared about how thier music sounded and actually tried to make something worth listening to.
@blackeyed72 "same old lists same old albums same old bands all of them predictable and rubbish.beach boys are stupid! the beatles are crap!"
Thank you! I couldnt agree more! Im tired of these cliched, mainstream lists as well! I mean, surely there are better albums around then anything by Beatles, Beach Boys or Bob Dylan etc. etc. etc?
@peeniizz agreed peenizz at last someone with sense, you always see the same old mainstream lists dylan, beatles, beach boys, fleetwodd bloody mac for gawds sake i listen to much greater music than this pap!
Not a bad list. I don't think The Beach Boys' "Sunflower" or "Friends" LP's belong on this list...and the two Rap selections, well, I just don't care for Rap so that's just personal preference. I also would have put Revolver in the top 2 or 3, not #36! Your inclusion of Buffalo Springfield Again?...well done, sir.
OK for "Velvet Underground & Nico", "Marquee Moon", "Closer", "The Doors", "Blonde On Blonde" or "Music From Big Pink"... Of the 80's: "Surfer Rosa" (1988) by The Pixies, of the 90's "Ladies And Gentlemen, We Are Floating In Space" by Spiritualized, of the 2000's: "Misery Is a Butterfly" (2004) by Blonde Redhead... and the best album ever: "Forever Changes" (1967) by Love.
Getting through list Pet Sounds on 1 wasn't surprising
Much too much of Beatles and Beach Boys - I love those bands but by putting so many records of them you sacrifice such artsists like Bowie, Radiohead, Springsteen, U2 and other shit
good list, a little dependant on beach boys/beatles ..not that there is anything wrong with that ..however i was surprised not to see any david bowie or sex pistols ..nevermind the bollocks is without a doubt top ten material and that's definitely not the punk rock in me saying that
Great list, i see your more 70s-90s rather than today's music. However i think Britney Spears - Blackout deserves a spot here, i dont love britney, but that was a very good album
not a bad list- a bit reliant on mid-late 60's rock bands (I mean, really...the Byrds are cool, but...), and some of your choices outside the classic rock area are kinda questionable. But overall, not bad.
"Revolver" should be MUCH higher. And one night after a couple of drinks, pop in "Dusty in Memphis"...
Joni Mitchell's BLUE and Hejira outshine all of these albums in terms of musicality, songwriting and expression. Without Blue there would be no Blood on the Tracks - even Dylan would admit this. Her influence on Led Zep is well reported and just about every woman who ever played a guitar or piano.
not that i don't love the beach boys and most of the cds/groups on these lists ..they are just so predictable - it's like you guys are scared to go outside of the box
Well, good choices. I only have 6 of your 50, (N .W.A. Straight Outta Compton, Miles Davis Kind Of Blue, The Beatles Abbey Road & Rubber Soul, Dr. Dre The Chronic, and Steely Dan Countdown To Ecstacy. Good list! A+!
I think it's cool how many people know the album 'Surfs Up'. Brian Wilson was very creative. If someone viewing this has not listned to the album 'Pet Sounds" I would highly recommend it. The album is not the hamburger/soda pop music that some of the other Beach Boys stuff sounds like.
I must be a really Old Hippie, & mostly good choices here. BUT..... Missing Janis Joplin, Incredible String Band, and Donovan. Well, that's me......flower child to the end!
Good picks, but you are missing some classics. I think you should have added Surf's Up by The Beach Boys, Machine Head by Deep Purple, and Mob Rules by Black Sabbath. But that's just my opinion
if i made a list like this, i would put "are you experienced" higher, and have absolutely 0 rap albums. but thats ur opinion, i'm not saying this list isn't right- i think it's a good list still.
nevermind was a genre in itself, it should have been in at least top 15. you also have a beach boys fetish, but that's just you're opinion. I don't really care for them much.
Actually ''The Wall Of Sound'' is good for particular performers, one hit-wonders,to be more specific.
For the class-acts like The Beatles or ABBA or Queen or Oasis or U2 or Nirvana or The Doors or Elton John or Michael Jackson or John Lennon...it just doesn't work!
On the contrary-it is just a pice of shit.
And about ARRIVAL-where exactly did you heard something like the shit wall of sound?
John Lennon actually prefered the Wall of Sounds technique and used to work with Spector. Phil Spector had the ears of a dog and I can clearly hear that his technique and similiar techniques are unbeatable in some directions. John Lennon is NOT a number one hit wonder and Spector had more hits than artists. Don't talk about the Wall of Sound that way. I'm going to close my channel if people continues to be so rude. Phil Spector was a genius who could invent it.
acdc back in black is the best to me. its the biggest selling rock album ever selling 49mill, it beats the n2 dark side of the moon by over ten mill, its also the second biggest selling music album ever betterd in sales only by mjacksons thriller. its influenced rock bands the world over, people learned to play listning to that album. i suppose its all opinions though.
true buddy, im a big acdc fan so im a bit biased saying its the best but what it has achieved is epic. highway to hell is also great but my fav acdc album is powerage, alot of acdc fans and other artists like kieth richards and slash think powerage is acdc's best album. you should download it bud its early acdc with the ledgend bon scott on vocals, back in black is brian jonston on vocals. r.i.p. bon scott. great list though bud, great veriaty.
@Mr11MUSICMAN um how can AC/DC suck? is it because they make simple hard rock? its not the most difficult songs to play i admit but they do rock. thats all they ever wanted to do. saying they suck is like saying i dont like rock in general. and only a few songs you like? yet you still think that they suck? thats a contradiction!
Alot of these are very well-worn for me, and Pet Sounds at the top!! Yes!! I feel that lists of great albums are unfairly slanted to artists that emerged in the mid 60s and beyond and released albums instead of singles as so many great soul, jazz, blues, early rock, and pop artists did. What about undeniably great artists who never released a definitively great studio album from front to back, such as Eric Clapton, the Four Tops, or Dusty Springfield? I guess that's another list.
Nice top 10....I didn't see Closer to Home by Grand Funk on the list...everyone overlooks them, mainly because of that cocksucker Jann Wenner and his shitrag of a magazine, Rolling Stone.
It is so refreshing to see somebody else who understands and appreciates good music you have terrific taste, a list of my own would be very similar. The Beach Boys are so much better than people know.
in my opinion, it would be hard to compile a list of the 50 greatest albums, 'cause there are so many out there....but I could name a handful that are better than Pet Sounds.
Every list is subjective. A better title might include "In my opinion" in the title, and "of the rock era," or "from the point of view of a 47 yo guitarist who has worked at a record store."
That being said, excellent list! Right up there with Nick Hornby's in "High Fidelity. Thanks for including so much Joni, Beatles and Zep. Putting Marquee Moon before Abbey Road?
My list would have 40 of these 50. Excellent contribution.
WOW MAN!!...SURE THAT YOU'RE 16 years old??!!..Your list IMPLY a great knowledge!..maybe you has worked at a record store so many years ago that forget it..:-)
..sorry!..nice job..mmhh..I'm a 48 year old who hasn't worked at record store .
NWA Ahead of Revolver? What are you smoking? Must be some pretty good stuff. At least you got your moneys worth. I just had to comment on that man, It's just hard for me to fathom it thats all.
Lotta stuff I dig on here like Floyd's Piper, that Sinatra album, Pet Sounds, and some of the Beatles albums.
But a lotta of the stuff on here is kinda tame... too saturated with the Beatles and Dylan and 'classic rock' junk. What's with "Kind of Blah" doing as your only jazz album?
you have a great taste in music. im listening to the beach boys right now. im not a fan of much rap, but im like a music whore, so im sure if i listen to more than a couple a songs i might start catching on.
thanks, lots of fun to see what other people think! i aggre with your choices 2 a large extent. but i don't feel the byrds should really be on the list they are always good but never great. Also i would for sure include "forever changes" by Love.
maybe you should listen to more music and be more open. Yes, The Chronic is better than Nevermind in some ways. Queen is a good band, but none of their albums were that great.
A Night at the Opera, Queen II, Sheer Heart Attack from queen are great albums. I think they're much better than nevermind (though nevermind still a great album).
Thank God! Yes! Revolver at 36 is PERFECT! It is a VERY GOOD album, but not the freaking GREATEST of all time!

in my opinion, it would be hard to compile a list of the 50 greatest albums, 'cause there are so many out there....but I could name a handful that are better than Pet Sounds.

Thank you very much. I might add "from the point of view of a 16 year old guitarist who hasn't worked at a record store" =)

Good list. And I like how you picked a few wild cards, there.

you have a great taste in music. im listening to the beach boys right now. im not a fan of much rap, but im like a music whore, so im sure if i listen to more than a couple a songs i might start catching on.

thanks, lots of fun to see what other people think! i aggre with your choices 2 a large extent. but i don't feel the byrds should really be on the list they are always good but never great.

I think they're much better than nevermind (though nevermind still a great album).

hatful is a compilation

I know it's a compilation. But that doesn't really matter. It was included in Q magazine's list of the 100 greatest british albums ever.
