This is my favorite Sonny Rollins tune because it has a funky bounce. I use to have it on a two part 45 rpm record released in the 60's. Sonny's use of space and terse phrasing to get the point across before going on those extended runs that made him and Trane the standard in horn playing is classic. Always the enigma, back then the story in Philly was that Rollins lost his muse after Trane came up and went into hiding only to emerge some years later playing his horn on the Brooklyn Bridge.
@kwacaw You are so right! The song is a killer cover done in the hard bop tradition of the era ala Horace Silver and Lee Morgan. anad yeah, Mr T, Stanley Turrentine's, Walk On By is another classic cover of the era. I believe it's on the album Rough and Tumble album which is filled with soulful tunes. Stanley handles his business on the song like crazy. He is melancholy and passionate at the same time just like the word to the song suggest. Thanks for the comment!
Jazz us, the rest clearly is not. This is the kind of straight ahead jazz I dig. I wish that "smooth jazz" stuff would just go away... check out Rollins "St. Thomas"...yeah!
I rember seeing the movie ALFIE starring Michael Cane it was great but the song whats it all about alfie was greater but the soundtrack by sonny rollins was the greatest never tire of listering to it BR
@glenn41062 About a minute after posting this comment I bought this song on itunes and searched alfie here on youtube. Watched the whole movie: fantastic. They sure don't make movies like that anymore. I love special effects, but I'll take a movie with actual characters and a decent plot over a movie with great special but lacking in the plot/character categories.
@palermobigband ian anderson met roland kirk in 69 at newport after ripping off his flute sound for a few years
roland kirk was a radio dj too roger kellaway did a live acoustic piano record with electronic music that was interesting and some direct to disc records
To the person looking for other songs in the same vein:
"Dat Dere" by Bobby Timmons. Cannonball Adderley did an AMAZING job on it on the album "Them Dirty Blues". Also check out Art Blakey's version of "Moanin".
Nothing short of amazing. Sonny does the damn thang ova & ova again. What a blessing to hear his music. Thanks for sharing. I'm the resident "e-jay" on my FB; so I just had to share. Thanks.
@MrCountrywest: That is Walter Booker on bass and he really carries this song as Roger Kellaway lays out and then softly sneaks back in on piano. I have always admired Walter for his ability to play bass and I commented to the late great Al McKibbon (whom I had the honor of playing with numerous times) "That Walter (Booker) really knows how to play." Al agreed.
@leftyodoul32 roger kellaway was called in to touch up a commander cody piano part that he couldnt seem to play with both hands [ without his knowledge] kellaway transcribed it on music paper from the tape and played it
