  • So where are the improper remarks are?

  • JUST BURN it down!!!

  • I got it...I'm going to find a field and set up a shack. Then I will get mad if someone tries to buy the land I am living on...wait...I will also make sure I build my land on a trash pile and for a living I will walk around in toxic waste....it gets better...I will get upset when the developers offer me a free house (even though I do not own the rights to the land they are removing me from).

I'm an evil westerner apparently...and I believe in Capitalism.

  • @jwward723 well said.Mumbai slum dwellers are basically illegal squators.

  • @jwward723 These people are living there because they have no other choice. As you are a westerner you will have by a much better standard of life than these poor people, who instead of becoming involved with crime are actually working a trade on the only land they can. Stop criticizing a world you know nothing about and actually think about what these people go through on a daily basis. Yes they don't own the land, but they are trying to improve their lives, their families. Have a heart.

  • I want the slum dwellers to own the land they live in Dharavi. They have a god-given right to have a higher quality of life in THEIR area. They deserve to continue their businesses in much better conditions, like those in first-world countries (who I speak against). I'd demolish the slum, once all the residents are fully compensated and rehoused in high-quality 450sqft living space, but not sell the land to fascist Western Multinational/Pharmaceutical and Real Estate companies.

  • This will be the biggest violation of human rights India has ever seen, and will NOT solve poverty in mumbai at all.

The proper solution would be to have the slum dwellers now legally own the land, because as of now they dont. I'm sure many would sell that land to developers at the market price, instantly making them rich.

  • Thats a good point and also, they are bringing in at least $1 billion to the Indian and US economies. If they DO decide to move forth with development, they should at least provide proper facilities to the people. I heard something about each family recieves 200sqft of living space after the project completes. Is that really enough? These people will loose jobs and money. They have businesses in these slums!

  • @HindiReader The most threaten part of this, is that the process is not voluntary for the people that live here. Its like getting kicked out of your home so that a mall can be built. Sure the mall is a more economic use of the land, but it is without your consent even WITH proper compensation. The entire transaction has to be voluntary on both sides of the table. Most genocides have occurred with the displacement of the masses.

  • @HindiReader how will their new riches afford them house in realty starved Mumbai??? There are more than 1 million people living in 1 sq.km area. What do you think how much land will each person own???How much will they get per head for selling the land to the developers?? This project will help the slum dwellers to live a descent life, especially in monsoons. Businesses will get legal status. Better infrastructure will enable them to improve their productivity.
