@tominrochester Yes this can be used on children, but only when other therapies have been tried and not been successful - ECT is always a last resort. The permanent brain damage referred to includes memory loss...etc. This was found in follow ups of these types of therapies. Although ECT can be effective in a number of patients, how it actually works is unclear. Side-effects afterwards are common, and in some extreme cases, permanent brain damage can be a result of this procedure.
@tominrochester actually it is used on children, i received ect not too long after i turned 17 and i did see others there my age or younger, mostly older people but there was young kids there too
@MurderousMarta Give me the name of a specific hospital that does this procedure. 17 is a nebulous age. In NY state, it is still considered an age covered by pediatric medicine (18 & out of school is generally adult), but this is probably different from state to state, so 17 can certainly be considered "adult". So which hospital? I doubt there are many that do it... if any.

Don't just throw out accusations without being able to back it up with specific instances and places that are perpetrators. All that i am saying is that it is used on minors i know because i received it as a minor and i know various others in that hospital that were minors that also received it, it was mainly older people but it was certainly used on younger people too. This is "unmodified ECT". This kind of ECT is illegal and is no longer used in psychiatry. I know this because I am a patient who receives Modified ECT for the treatment of medication-resistant chronic depression that causes me to be suicidal. I receive maintenance therapy once every 4 weeks. It keeps me from relapsing into a downward spiral of depression and suicidal despair. The anti-depressant effect is immediate upon waking up. Making modern ECT illegal would be a death sentence for me.

The way they used ECT back then was to stop the patients from having higher thought processes, just like lobotomies. Nowadays, they use it more efficiently.

My dissertation is on the treatment of depression. How do I know it is true? Well; apart from seeing the benefits through my own eyes, and speaking to people who were close to committing suicide due to a life of constant depression. Apart from going through over 15 RCS carried out over the last 25 years involving over 10,000 patients (researched by independent groups, government studies and yes one by a drugs company - which interestingly claimed a lower success rate..
...possibly because electricity is CHEAP compared to drugs....).
So, taking this into concideration (all the countless evidence that I have had to check, very boring, I have no intention of going into this side of medicine), I believe i can safely say that i am not just 'taking the word of someone'.

In relation to your learn to control yourself, depression doesn't work like that!
Chronic depression is due to biological changes in the brain.
The pills also work, but lets save this discussion for another day shall we?
Out of interest what would you do to help someone whose life has been destroyed by chronic depression? Do nothing? And before you say 'talk with them' that is a prerequisite of treatment. It has good rates of success with very minor and environment related depression, not the type that is treated with ECT.

A lady comes into hospital, unconscious from a traffic accident, and needs surgery on her heart immediately (involving, again against common sense, the ripping of her sternum + rib cage etc etc), but she cant give consent (unconscious).
Also, perhaps i could help you understand the science and rationale behind ECT treatment.
In the most basic possible way, it increases the neurons in the brains plasticity (meaning they have a greater ability to make new connection with other neurons, decreasing the inhibitory effects of depression).
There is also suggestions that it increases the brains blood flow, decreasing the concentrations of neurotransmitters responsible for depression.
HOW DO YOU KNOW these studies are real? Are you aware that psychiatrists and mental hospitals and drug companies make millions, billions? every year off of the psychiatric industry? How can you actually take the word of somebody who tells you that its ok to put electricity thru someones brain, and that is going to help them? Do you know what COERSION is? Do you know what FEAR is? Do you know what torture is? Do you deny the existence of these things? Are people with degrees immune to corruption?
Girl becomes more depressed. Drugs working beautifully on her! She can hardly talk! Let her parents see her now that she's drugged, TOLD she's out of control, and maybe coerced. Well, firstly I'm also a med student so not only have I met people who have had the treatment but I've also read the studies performed to show why it works... do you really think the treatment would be liscensed and allowed to go on if it was "torture" and had no benefits towards the patient. This video is scary I remember watching it the night before my first ECT treatment (3 years ago) it scared me shit-less. I was relieved to find out ECT wasn't anything like this and the memory loss wasn't bad. ECT saved my life and I support it.

@MassDeportation Everyone could see the difference and so could I. It lifted my mood, and my suicidality. The memory loss even though it wasn't bad didn't help me, it mostly effected my non-verbal memory so i couldn't recognise peoples faces that I didn't know very well. I don't need more ECT but if I needed it I would have it again in a heart beat.

I was told it helped me and I can also see that it helped me for example I have stopped self harming and haven't tried to kill myself since my last ECT session. They kept me on the same medication, medication that I had been on for years when they started ECT. No it is not true that the drugs I took before ECT and after were different.

@MassDeportation I think I would know what meds had been altered as I had to take them everyday. Yes I said "everyone could see the difference" (that's including my friends and family) I ALSO said "And so could I". I don't have health insurance as I live in New Zealand, where health care is free, so the answer is none.
@MassDeportation I think I would remember being tortured, the memory loss doesn't wipe out huge chunks of time it just makes your non verbal memory worse for example putting names to faces of people you've just met or rembering what a shop you've only been to once looks like.

So as an electrician the only thing I can think of when I see this is that "electroconvulsive therapy" or ELECTROSHOCK TREATMENT or TORTURE which is its proper name, is the the same thing as killing you but only going half way through. It doesn't kill you completely, only half way. You know like being hit with an arrow but you can't pull it through. Instead you're left to bleed to death.
A fellow electrician from a another company died three years ago from a electric shock. He burned out like a fuse or a cigarette - all his organs inside the body were cooked. So death is another pretty serious risk electricians take when working anywhere near electricity. ELECTRICITY IN ANY FORM CAN BE LETHAL!!!
I am a professional electrician and I work with electricity all the time, but luckily I haven't had any electric shocks yet. But I know other people, other electricians who had electric shocks, either very insignificant shocks to their arms, hands and fingers or more severe ones. Two of my colleagues had very serious skin burns while one almost lost the sight due to electric arc/spark caused while changing a high voltage fuse.
They first called it ELECTROSHOCK TREATMENT and then they changed the name to ELECTROCONVULSIVE THERAPY to sort of beautify it, to justify it as a treatment. To make it sound more scientific I would say.

As a former sufferer of major depressive disorder who currently goes to ECT 2xs a week, I can honestly say ECT has saved my life. Tomorrow will be my 5th treatment. I had depression for years and no medicine could help. All it took was 1 ECT to turn my life around. I love my family and I love my life. I feel like I have done a 180 in the 2 weeks since I started ECT. I got my life back.

@tominrochester Yes this can be used on children, but only when other therapies have been tried and not been successful - ECT is always a last resort. The permanent brain damage referred to includes memory loss...etc. This was found in follow ups of these types of therapies. Although ECT can be effective in a number of patients, how it actually works is unclear. Side-effects afterwards are common, and in some extreme cases, permanent brain damage can be a result of this procedure.

In NY state, it is still considered an age covered by pediatric medicine (18 & out of school is generally adult), but this is probably different from state to state, so 17 can certainly be considered "adult". So which hospital? I doubt there are many that do it... if any.

ECT was certainly used inappropriately in the past, and probably there are instances where it is used inappropriately now, but it would be foolish to say that it hasn't helped a lot of people.

This is "unmodified ECT". This kind of ECT is illegal and is no longer used in psychiatry. I know this because I am a patient who receives Modified ECT for the treatment of medication-resistant chronic depression that causes me to be suicidal. I receive maintenance therapy once every 4 weeks. It keeps me from relapsing into a downward spiral of depression and suicidal despair. The anti-depressant effect is immediate upon waking up. Making modern ECT illegal would be a death sentence for me.

McCall (2004) reports that of patients that have had ECT, it is described positively, 80% said it was better than the dentist and 50% prefer ECT to somatic treatments.
For structural damage to occur to the brain, a seizure needs to last more then 90 minutes, or multiple brief seizures over 25 hours.
Death in ECT occurs 0.006% of the time (Weiner, 1984).
ECT saves lives, don't just go with what the media/uneducated people on here say - go actually do some research and find the facts.

Also, perhaps i could help you understand the science and rationale behind ECT treatment.
In the most basic possible way, it increases the neurons in the brains plasticity (meaning they have a greater ability to make new connection with other neurons, decreasing the inhibitory effects of depression).
There is also suggestions that it increases the brains blood flow, decreasing the concentrations of neurotransmitters responsible for depression.

This video is scary I remember watching it the night before my first ECT treatment (3 years ago) it scared me shit-less. I was relieved to find out ECT wasn't anything like this and the memory loss wasn't bad. ECT saved my life and I support it.

The memory loss even though it wasn't bad didn't help me, it mostly effected my non-verbal memory so i couldn't recognise peoples faces that I didn't know very well. I don't need more ECT but if I needed it I would have it again in a heart beat.

I was told it helped me and I can also see that it helped me for example I have stopped self harming and haven't tried to kill myself since my last ECT session. They kept me on the same medication, medication that I had been on for years when they started ECT. No it is not true that the drugs I took before ECT and after were different.

It looks awful, and indeed the thought of electricity passing through your brain is bad! But its a proven treatment, and looking only at the comment above (xoieboie) it helps people. The thought of someone making you loose conciousness to rip open your sternum and rib cage to 'fiddle' with your heart sounds worse!

So as an electrician the only thing I can think of when I see this is that "electroconvulsive therapy" or ELECTROSHOCK TREATMENT or TORTURE which is its proper name, is the the same thing as killing you but only going half way through. It doesn't kill you completely, only half way. You know like being hit with an arrow but you can't pull it through. Instead you're left to bleed to death.

A fellow electrician from a another company died three years ago from a electric shock. He burned out like a fuse or a cigarette - all his organs inside the body were cooked. So death is another pretty serious risk electricians take when working anywhere near electricity. ELECTRICITY IN ANY FORM CAN BE LETHAL!!!

I am a professional electrician and I work with electricity all the time, but luckily I haven't had any electric shocks yet. But I know other people, other electricians who had electric shocks, either very insignificant shocks to their arms, hands and fingers or more severe ones. Two of my colleagues had very serious skin burns while one almost lost the sight due to electric arc/spark caused while changing a high voltage fuse.

They first called it ELECTROSHOCK TREATMENT and then they changed the name to ELECTROCONVULSIVE THERAPY to sort of beautify it, to justify it as a treatment. To make it sound more scientific I would say.

@michelnicoolausson @Gazza844 @brambreaks @invaderzimgir2007 and others who may have tried to insult me (in fact, it's rather amusing). Unless you are a psychiatrist, you won't know what you're talking about. Medicine is now heavily evidence-based. Therefore, if ECT did NOT work, and was highly unsafe, it would not be allowed. I agree, there are many clinicians who beleive it is wrong/unsafe to be performed, but there is still a large body who do perform it and for whom it works.

As a former sufferer of major depressive disorder who currently goes to ECT 2xs a week, I can honestly say ECT has saved my life. Tomorrow will be my 5th treatment. I had depression for years and no medicine could help. All it took was 1 ECT to turn my life around. I love my family and I love my life. I feel like I have done a 180 in the 2 weeks since I started ECT. I got my life back.

"Lastly, it does NOT cause permanent brain damage" tell that to my best friend who's lost chunks of her memories, and does not even remember her mother who has passed away before the treatment, nor our childhood growing together, all she remembered was my name. they said the antegrade amnesia would dissipate within a few months... and its been years... and even the retrograde... she has problems holding new memories things and such...
