The fact that people are still debating over which version is better is a testament to the power of each. I think they are both phenomenal in different ways. Johnny's version rips my heart out when he sings, because it's from a lifetime full of regret and he knew the end was nearing. NiN's version is completely different in my mind, because NiN's tells it with different emotion. It's the same song, but two completely different stories are told by the performers as they sing. Incredible.
I can't really say which one is better, Trent Reznor said he actually cried after seeing JC's version. Both are good, and it's too hard to compare because they are both from different genres of music. We'll just say this is an amzing song.
People think the JC version has more feeling because they empathize JC for the love and hope he sings with. This version has MUCH more emotion, they're just not sunshine and rainbows so most don't personally feel anything listening. I will not lie, I like Cash's works, easily the best i his genre. But when you come over to Nine inch Nails orginal version and say "ZOMG JOHNNY CASHZ VERSION IZ BETAR" you make Johnn Cash spin in his grave because you're making a mockery of one of the man in black's last singles.

The fact that people are still debating over which version is better is a testament to the power of each. I think they are both phenomenal in different ways. Johnny's version rips my heart out when he sings, because it's from a lifetime full of regret and he knew the end was nearing. NiN's version is completely different in my mind, because NiN's tells it with different emotion. It's the same song, but two completely different stories are told by the performers as they sing. Incredible.

I can't really say which one is better, Trent Reznor said he actually cried after seeing JC's version. Both are good, and it's too hard to compare because they are both from different genres of music. We'll just say this is an amzing song.

People think the JC version has more feeling because they empathize JC for the love and hope he sings with. This version has MUCH more emotion, they're just not sunshine and rainbows so most don't personally feel anything listening. This song is the last mark on the world for the character portrayed on the album. I get chills in my chest listening.

trent is a musical genius. thats why cash wanted to cover his song. its not about who sang it better. obviously, this song relates to them in their own way, just like the people who listen to it, and any one who is a Cash or NIN fan can see that.

Two great artists experiencing such a parallel of pain and anguish in their lives due to addiction and fame. Two very different but excellent versions of the same pain. I have to appreciate them both and each in their own way of expressing what it meant to them as individuals...but this, the original version, it still, in my opinion, the better of the two...and I am a Cash fan.
