Let's apply a proper perspective here. Weak, facile junky cover-versions like this rather pathetic, embarrassing version of the GREAT ORIGINAL Jan & Jean track of "New Girl in School" (orig even before that, known as 'When Summer Comes, Gonna Hustle You') - are shameful. Cover versions like this are PRETEND MUSIC. The ORIGINAL fantastic, unbeatable Early 60s Sthn Calif music of groups like J & D + The BBs - can't be mucked around with in the modern era. Fans - just SEARCH OUT THE ORIGINALS !!
@colindominy More like, Jan wrote Gonna Hustle You, UA refused to release it because it was so shocking, so he rewrote it as New Girl In School, and the label accepted that. I asked Jan one time what he meant by gonna hustle you and he kinda winked at me and said "It meant I was gonna ___ her brains out, kid.' Aww Jan, I miss ya, baby.
Feel good songs like this are no longer in style. What an era! So glad to have been a teen in the '60's. Jan and Dean's music and , more importantly, that special upbeat feeling will last with me forever !
is there some reason why some videos on YouTube come across really "choppy" and some come across smooth as silk ....???
really frustrating to listen to these choppy videos when I know the people that post them want them to come across smooth -- really detracts from the song

Thank God for the Beatles and the Rolling Stones coming on the scene and blowing this type of kindergarden music off the airwaves. The whole surfing/ hot car crap of the early 60's was a low point in Rock & Roll.
I would not say the beachboys stole there music. Jan Berry and Brain Wilson worked on a lot of stuff toghether . AS did Roger Christian and Gary Usher. With out the Beachboys and jan and dean , neither band may have been has good as they became. You need to get the Jan and Dean in memory of Jan Berry cd. It ROcks. If Carnivivle of sound had been released it would have been the same caliber as "pet sounds" " Sgt Peppers"
Jan and Dean had a lot of hits. Baby Talk, linda ,surf city, dead mans curve, drag city, honolulu lulu, ride the wild surf ,little old lady from pasadena, side walk surfin to name a few.
I love this version of the song so much more than the original studio version. Does anyone know whether there's a better-quality audio track of this, rather than just ripping the audio from this video?
How 'bout 1:45 when the dude wrote "destroy" with a heart for the "o"? That's hilarious! Of all words to have a little heart,.. destroy? Kind of a mixed message there. BLAHAHAHA!!!!
Plenty of upbeat songs are still made--even in the metal genre. "Magic Never Dies" is a very upbeat album by a band called Power Quest. The band Angra has a bossa nova styled song called "Hunters and Prey" which you might like more, though.
Was Mike love singing this?? Sounds like it though...

Jan & Dean belong in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
They had many hits, fans and helped to create sounds that were legendary.
J&D and the Beach Boys created the California surf sound that helped to define the 1960's.
I shake my head at some of the acts already in the Hall.
Many did not do half of what Jan & Dean did.

What the movie "Grease" was all about...Except took place in the late '50s not early '60s. Not too much of a change there though in that time period.

Nice of them to include the chorus of the original version of this song, called Gonna Hustle You, in this later version.

Too bad upbeat songs like these aren't made anymore nowadays. Gotta love youtube
