When they decided to unmask Kane, didn't they realize it would contradict all the times they made it seem like his face was all burned and distorted?

Yeah, they did pretty much go, "Eh, fuck it." They tried to explain it all away by claiming his scars had been psychological all along, but waaaaaaay back when Kane debuted there were a couple of moments backstage where other wrestlers happened across him without his mask on and they reacted in revulsion, confirming that he was physically scarred. WWE likes to pretend all of that never happened :P
