In many cases, if you look at the basic composition of the demographics for "ex-felons", more often than not, and at a higher rate than any other crime, these people were put in jail for drug or drug-related crimes. Simple as that.

Whether it be possession, intent to sell, or even someone robbing a liquor store to pay for their next fix, the root is often based around drugs, more often than not, non-violent drug crimes.
