@marinskater A boomstick is a different project, which is basically a shuttle-quick-release valve which creates an explosive decompression of a chamber. Boom!
Unfortunately the cost of supplies goes up rather steeply as the diameter increases. The two variables you have are pressure and volume of air, and you can't get too compressed or you run the risk of exploding your mechanism and/or also getting too chaotic of an air flow. A bigger system will move more air, but will cost a lot more... the one this size cost over $100 if I recall correctly (which I may not, it's been a while; but typically my PVC doo-hickies are $50 to $100 or so).
I'm doing a project with the boomstick cannon, and if i could make it more powerful, how would i or extend its range? i want to make it worth the cost, which seems like it might be kind of steep, what kind of price should i expect? sorry for all the questions :/
The boomstick version has the most force, but the garbage can version is an easier build, and with a small hole for a small, focused vortex... you may have _some_ hope.
sell this to martin lights as a smoke machine that syncs with sound and ur richi have te secret to make them take ur project i am aa sound engineer by the way... email me back on utube
Bigger holes, with the same pressure, make for larger and slower donuts... I'm trying to remember how that affected distance... pretty sure the bigger slower donuts faded out sooner, but on the other hand, small fast ones tend to burst apart in the chaos.
I think they both go pretty much similar distances. It would be an interesting study to do, vary hole size and record the various changes.
oh. ok. its still fun to mess stuff up and hit people with the air blasts. but do you think that the larger holes would have more impact then the smaller ones
what is a boom stick?

I want the woofer variety. That would make a good machine vortex cannon. :)
JerryGiesler09 7 months ago
Would it be any better to make it more conical? where the ring spawns and is expanded out by the surface of the cone?
Andyterranbase1 9 months ago
@Andyterranbase1 I don't know if it would help or hurt; coning out will tend to make a low pressure area, which may make the ring expand more.

so it turns out i know someone who knows someone who has two air cannons that crank out 300 psi. would i be able to turn them into vortex cannons?

After seeing those shots of the cannon shooting at the camera. Now I know how they did special effects back in the original Star Trek eposides.
MisO6T9 2 years ago
With those "shots" into the camera, it's almost like some sort of space-age explosion/pulse or something!

What software are you using to generate your transients (just out of curiosity). Also, why not add a link to the Make article in your info? Thanks!

if you have a larger hole, does the smoke ring still go just as far?

It is your basic glycerine fog-machine fog, the kind used at Halloween and by DJs who don't go all-out and get the dry ice fogger.
