Are you in the perspective viewport? Are the other arrows visible as sometimes you can accidently press the "x" key which hides/shows the x,y,z arrows.
Try different viewports and let me know if this makes a difference.
Really basic question, hope you don't mind. When you create the light and move it around, how do I make my perspective view update the effect the light has on the object/scene. When you move your light around, the perspective view shows what is happening to the overall effect of the scene. My perspective view remains unchanged and I can only see any changes once I have rendered. Hope this makes sense.
Have you looked in the viewport configuration with a variety of different check boxes that change how the viewport behaves. You may have default lighting set and I thing the shortcut is something like Shift +L or CTRL + L. You can access the configuration by right-clicking on one of the viewport buttons in the bottom-right corner to experiment.
Hi and many thanks for your reply. I managed to find the viewport configuration >lighting and shadows, but can't seem to find anything here to change. Looked in the rendering tab which has default lights ticked, but this doesn't seem to alter the way the lights behave in the viewport. Just think its a really useful tool to be able to see the lighting update as you move around in the perspective viewport. Have seen it many times, but can't figure out how its done.
Thanks so much for going to the trouble of posting that video. I have followed the settings and it now does what I was hoping for. I think I need to play around with the light parameters as I can't get a defined circle in perspective view for the spot light, more of a dispersed star effect. It does render okay though.
I got a question about this :/ i just got 3ds max and im still learning (just started so thats why these basics) but.. i do everything you do...and when i get to the part with the lighting...i don't see a thing change.. not even with the plane thing.. and if i press on render.. its all black :s
Can you get the lighting to work in a basic scene, say a just a box and a single omni light?
If so, when working through this tutorial, when you place the spotlight in the scene did you make sure that it was above the plane, and the spotlight cone was big enough to cover the plane, and the light intensity was a reasonable level (defaults at 1.0) ?
well its kinda strange because the omni light works but the spotlight cone doesn't no matter how big it is... or in what direction... maybe there are some settings not right? or i dunno :p
thanks in advance :) hope to hear from you soon ^^
Which version Max are you using (Version + "Standard" or "Design")?
Are you using the standard spotlight, or photometric as the tutorial uses standard?
In the spotlight modify settings did you check the intensity of the light is set to 1, decay is set to none, and near and far attenuation is unchecked for "Use"?
Finally, have you checked to ensure the spotlight hotspot beam is of suitable size say 50-100?
Oh, and is the light set to white or another suitable bright colour?
im using the 2009 32bit(<-- maybe that says something :P) Design version and i followed every instruction you said and did in the tutorial
err... i don't know what color the light is :o didn't knew i could change it...and for the modify settings i haven't looked so far into 3DsMax.. actually im a bit of a huge noob :p
hope to hear from you soon, i will look for the settings
thanks for your help so far:)
PS: the weird thing is.. when i create a few objects.. the color stay's the same..
Have a look in the viewport configuration panel. Right-click on one of the viewport buttons in the bottom-right corner of Max and have a look at the check boxes. Experiment with them to see if this makes any difference.
Problem fixed. :D

When you raise the light up my green arrow doesn't appear and I can move it anywhere BUT up. :(

I've posted a quick reply video (no sound) showing how you can set some of the configuration options to display shadows. Let me know if this helps :)
