  • so true bout the harmonics

  • hey thanks...i learned this in 10 minutes

  • You are a great teacher! Thanks for the lesson...I really enjoyed watching you. Thanks again. = )

  • god... i'd pay everything for teacher like him.

  • great explanations, much better than all other instructional vids I've seen here. Thanks!

  • Hey dude.. no need to develop a technique. Just crank up the gain and use a coin for a pick. That was a trick Billy used. Sounds awesome!!

  • when i first started doing pinch harmonics i found it easier to use a smaller pick i use dunlop jazz 3s now and there great for all playing

  • Thanks!!!! I can do it now!!

  • beasty guitar david beautiful

  • LOL G-String hahahah!!!

    NZLD

    -NiCad Drag Racer-

  • lol move ur hand around that g string haha

  • I have always thought billy gibbons uses too many harmonics, but that's neither here nor there. I've got a question. I'm developing a harmonic tapping technique, but the problem so far has been eliminating the root note. I'm using a lot of octave+major third and octave+fifth harmonics where it is extremely important to eliminate the root tone because it's out of key. some have recommended a compressor, and that did help, but I'm looking for other suggestions. (please no technique suggestions)

  • You think billy gibbons used to much try listening to a zakk wylde song you might puke

  • @pigvonrow1215

Here here! Gibbons' harmonics, while plentiful, are suited to the music, IMO. Wylde just abuses them. It seems like he can;t finish a phrase without ending it with a bent harmonic.

  • @pigvonrow1215 Lol, my friends and I joke about making a drinking game out of zakk wyldes harmonics. lol, everytime he hits one, take a shot!

  • @Joeypeck87 man u will get fucked up fast! im in

  • everything is already invented youre not gonna come up with something new. u freakin suck loser

  • @ CamBoKriPsTAh, if I close one eye the keyboard isn't too difficult to negotiate, and thank you for not taking my comment too seriously. Enjoy the world of "Artificial Harmonics", although I still fail to see what actually is "artificial" about them.

  • because they dont happen naturaly on the fretboard.

    thus Artificial.

  • Thanks, for a while there I thought members of YouTube had totally lost their sense of humour. Cambone13, I'm talking about you. Miserable cunt.

  • disregarding 1,2 and 3, you are an idiot. Artificial harmonics are another name for pinched harmonics.

  • "1. If this guy took his baseball cap off, would his ears suddenly pop out so he looks like a wing nut ?"

Haha you're being a twat but that was one pretty funny comment haha

  • @fossilisedmuso

for a guy who got drunk u can sure type accurately lol.

and...OMG THATS HOW U DO ARTIFICIAL HARMONICS!? ive been trying to work it out! LOL

  • That a way to go and embarrass yourself follisisedmuso.

  • MA QUANTO CAZZO PARLI?

  • arent these pinch harmonics?

  • La Grange!

  • ta gueule,joue connard

  • Actually one of the first to use this type of

movable harmonic was Roy Buchanan wayback in the 50s. He can be heard using it on his "Hot Wires" CD. (on the 1st track)

  • When he does the back-to-back Billy pinch harmonics....Why do I think of a pogo-stick?

  • so these are basically pinch harmonics??

  • mmm, and its not even that great xD

  • i thought u were supposed to only touch the string REALLY soft with your thumb

  • Those are Natural Harmonics.

  • @shippensbia those are pinched squelies retard

  • Pinched sqealies? That's a bit redundant.

I think Cody is talking about when you barely touch your finger to the string and strum aka a natural harmonic, not an artificial harmonic.

  • The hardest harmonics are on both E strings imo

  • D, A and E are the bottom strings, so you're doing fine

  • dang man...he said on the 7th fret that was the 5th

  • D is on the G string, 7th fret. He's resting his index finger behind his ring finger on the 5th (C) so it looks like that's the note he's playing. But "D on the 7th" is correct.

  • we all make mistakes from time to time =]

  • I can do pinch harmonics on the D A and E strings but i find them much harder on the bottom three strings. any tips? am I doing something wrong?

  • it is normally harder on the higher strings. i find them easy on the 3rd fret of the g strings and 12th on the g.

  • great lesson, as always. nice one, David!

  • man zztop was killer

  • Was killer? They're still giving great performances.

  • are these aka pinch harmonics?

  • i remember when my harmonics were weak, and i just uber drove my amp to get it louder, now its more like, light drive blues squeal cool beans!

  • Cool!

  • ok what the hell looking at my amp is has overdrive so is that like distortion they sound the same and there is no gain there is level and drive help me

  • gain = drive = overdrive, they're all the same

  • so whats the difference between an overdriven guitar and a distortion guitar ?? on powertab editor the sound is different slightly

  • yea i noticed too, when ur using overdrive, its the natural gain from the amp, start at 0 on the gain dial and its clean, turn the dial to 10 and it overdrives the sound - this is called distortion, some amps dont overdrive as much as others in which ull need a distortion pedal like a Boss MT-2 Metal Zone, and itl add a signifficant amount of distortion, more than the natural overdrive of the amp

  • Thanks man i wonder if you got a dvd for building up speed... thats kinda what i lack the most...

  • witch gibson les paul is that

  • mid 90's les paul limited edition standard

  • Thanks bro. You're always helpful!

  • thanks man, i really needed to lean how to play these AH for Icipher by DT

  • good xD

  • u r the nice guy....:Xx

    and very kind teacher

    i will buy ur DVD

  • you are officially my guitar hero

    lol

  • i think you are awsome i enjoy your teaching .thanks looking forward to more

  • Very cool! Now, how do I do that on a fingerpicked bass?

  • Dont get it

  • pichardo,

If you want a cheap Gibson Les Paul, go to ebay and look for one that's beaten up pretty good. You won't find one in good shape for cheap.

  • Roy Buchanan is better at artificial harmonics than billy gibbons.

  • Can anybody tell me if it matters what kind of pickup you have?

  • like he said, more gain or distortion will make it easier to produce a harmonic so a high output pickup like a humbucker will produce better harmonics

  • flip your truss rod cover

  • i want gibson les pul pleas tell me where i can get a very cheap one pleas reply as soon as posible

  • string thumb string thumb string thumb

  • I can never do artificial harmonics on the thinner strings.

  • I can do on the thinner strings but not on the "fat" strings hahaha

  • it just takes practice keep workin on it (a trick i use is putting more thumb in it and really "digging" in

  • I have a freakin 1971 gibson custom and I would trade that for ur guitar any day man! nice vid.

  • Thanks, very nice lesson

  • lol he said g string sofunny

  • Nice Lesson!

What is the color of that guitar called ?

  • i think it's sunburst

  • i do think it's some kind of burst... but i don't think it's an sunburst... i just wanted to know if the shop where i'm planning on buying a les paul, have the same color... cause i really like the color.

  • yea it's an awesome colour

  • it's fireburst

  • Hi - this les paul is a limited edition - so it has the cool fret markers and different finish - I am not sure of the exact finish name - perhaps fireburst - I dont see many with this finish - kind of cool.

    rock on!

    DT

  • were can someone buy a les paul like yours?

  • I love it !

  • gibson is really bad about finishes, they will call two totally different finishes the same thing and they are just overall inconsistent about it, which really describes them overall. and this video makes me miss when you could have all the songs up on youtube, I especially miss the rush lesson where you were just ripping it up.

  • @rockongoodpeople What about the type of harmonics where steve morse uses?? where he like tap the note 12 frets up??

  • Almost looks like a tobacco burst finish

  • @rockongoodpeople sunburst i think

  • Looking for some nice sounding piano blues written into political satire? Search out "I got Obama Blues!" on Youtube or click the "busterpet" icon above.

  • Excellent lesson. Did anyone notice that this guy always tucks his ears in his hat?

  • Great lesson!

  • if you understand the mechanics of the string motion it becomes obvious that using the tip of the third finger is a much easier and more versatile method,it also explains why some guitars work great and some dont,,286 characters remaining means there is not enough room to explain.the thumb works but the ring finger works better, and much much easier, most telecasters

will be cooperative ,,i first learnt on a tele cos IT showed ME how

that was in 1981..wish i could make y'all a video,,

  • nice vid..it helped me alot(like all of your other videos by the way:)

  • Has anyone else ever tried to pull off a pinch harmonic with a thumb pick?

  • that sounds hard

  • I did it once.

  • Trepidationn: I find it very hard to do so...I find a pinch much easier to pull off with just a regular pick, though I still like fooling around with a thumb pick.

  • Never thought of doing that. I've been trying for the last twenty minutes and have not even come close. All I get a clunker notes.

  • Wait a tick. I'm getting it. Not great but it's happening. I use the tip of my middle finger to deaden the string instead of the side of my thumb. It's like snapping your fingers except the middle finger doesn't touch the thumb. It's not great but I snapped off a few in a row. This will forever be known as the "KR0GG Harmonic". :)

  • so u actually stop the string from vibrating COMPLETELY or what?

then that makes it imposible on acoustic...

  • Do you know what a natural harmonic is? do you know the intervals? An artificial harmonic will follow the same pattern of natural harmonics (12th fret, 7th, 5th, etc.).

You don't stop the string from vibrating completely, no. You can do them on acoustics.

  • Dave is The Best...Rock On Man :)

  • That guy is a good teacher.

  • grab that pinch harmonic and hit the whammy bar.....going down....

  • my hero

  • DAVE DAVE DAVE !!!!!!!!!! HEY DAVE LOOK HERE I NEED HELP! is it worth it to spend $500 on a epiphone 56'goldtop les paul????

  • yes epiphones are a great rep of gibbsons

  • a really good epiphone les paul standard is $650. i don't think that is real cheap. although i bought mine when it was $499.

  • I didn't mean their cheap price wise... I ment they aren't very good.

  • get a plus top

    everyone loves plus top epi's

  • Yes

  • Awsome vid guys

  • Great lesson with loads of good tips, thanks very much.

  • Dude, what the chuck is up with your truss road? Did you want it to be that way?

  • He put it on backwards on purpose, during guitar maintenance I think.

He talks about it in an earlier video (quite a lot earlier)

  • sweet. thanx dave

  • how do u get that echo sound?

  • that riff at the end of the vid sounds a little joe satriani-ish, which is a good thing :) rock on

  • Nice!

  • You have the coolest job in history

  • Thank you so much for showing me this, I always wondered why my licks dont sound as cool as the ones my friend does. Youre such a cool guy, always enjoy new videos by you.

  • cool

  • doesn't sound that good when it's slowed down

  • u gangsta lol

  • i think it's easier in a drop tuning well from experiance i mean at least drop d anyway

  • your hands are super white lol

  • your the best/ my favorite "next level guitar" teacher/host.

  • Noice, BTW ZZ top's Blu Ray concert is freakin' A!!!^_^

  • hahahaha i just notice the truss cover is backwards. do you have any dimebag style instruction videos?

  • where is it on a strat

  • No one records the locations of these things. You find them out through experimentation, moving up and down the string like he said.

If you're not getting any artificial harmonics whatsoever, your technique is wrong, not the location on the string.

When you normally pick a string, your thumb doesn't touch it. For an artificial harmonic, DON'T change the way you grip the pick, just tilt your hand inward so that when you pick the string, your thumb is touching the string too.

  • hey dave, what size picks do you use?

  • They have a video up about which picks to use and what he prefers, etc. Not sure if it's still up on YouTube though.

  • For picks I use Fender meduims

    rock on!

    DT

  • Fender meduims are the best!!! Used to use heavies and they mad emy picking sloppy. Mediums in my opinion are the best.

  • Kewl im going to annoy everyone with this for long time roundeye

  • i love gibbsons! \,,/

  • i like how u teach but i am lefty so i dont get it much.

  • When he says left, do right. When he says right, do left. That's the only difference.

Alternatively, learn to play right-handed. Plenty of people have done it before... *shrug*

  • i accidently learned how to use them without a pick. weird

  • Actually it's a little easier to do them without, because if you're striking the string with your index finger, your thumb will be right next to it, and at roughly the same height.

The concept's always the same. For example, press down on the 2nd fret of any string. Then lightly place your index finger over the 14th fret of that string, and use your thumb to pluck the string anywhere behind your index finger. Harmonic, right? :)

  • thx david, ur always a great healp ^^

  • a great teacher !

  • i've been playing guitar for years and i had never relized this harmonics existed

  • it took me a while to figure out myself

  • Seriously? Never noticed it in music? What do you listen to?

  • wow, nice tone. is that from the las paul or the amp?

  • remember to put this at the end of most youtube urls to get better audio and pic quality.. &fmt=18

  • Cool!

  • thanks! i cant my eyes off your les paul!!!

this guy does have a pretty cool site!

  • You're a great teacher!

Is there a way you can maybe do a video on Guitar Phrasing?

I think 90% of the guitarists out there would benefit from this.

    Thanks!

  • Thanks man! Helped alot! :)

  • Great video! 5/5

  • pinch harmonics you ``pinch´´ them with your pick, but artificial harmonics are the same sound, but not necessarily pinch them.

  • the blue note! what about the brown note?

  • 250th view!

  • lol 251 !

  • what?

  • me too

  • Great lesson. I love how those harmonics can really make the guitar scream. I love that guitar you have. Absolutely gorgeous finish.

  • There's nothing better than some Billy Gibbons licks! Thanks again for a kickass demonstration. Some more bullets to add to my ammo, I'm digging it brother.

    A.C.

  • Thnx just what i wanted

  • Great as always guys! How about a lesson on some bluegrass licks?

  • i love listening to david, he's a cool teacher

  • Excellent example. As he already said, it takes time to do such a thing.

  • great as allways
