  • Absolutely superb and one of my favourite songs from the '80s.

I must dig out the 12 inch single I've got somewhere in the loft.

    Thanks so much for this.

  • Absolute CLASSIC...........XXXXXXX

  • What an incredable song, and video, pete is, without doubt, a song writing genius. and, perhaps, one, of the biggest talents, this country, has ever produced. He should have, been a massiv4e star, he didn't get the recognition he deserved. The 1980s were the best. The Sheffield Leadmill, The Limit club, The Dragon Dinnington. and, fantastic music. Thanks for posting. Well done with the video, perfect. LOL .

  • Am I right in thinking that this is about being on the dole in the early 80's (i was!)

The opening line 'Here in my pocket I've got the story of the blues' refers to a dole card. (Benefit form no. UB40)

    A geniune classic this one

  • Me too, good times tho.

  • Fantastic! One of my alltime favorites.

  • wow i was hoping i would find this song again....

Guess like so many others out there ....you love too ...was reminded of one other thing in days of old rig (lol CB radio to some) remember chatting to fellow cber she likewise did too....used to play over and over..good song.... thanks for posting D like beauty! remember part 2?

  • Part 2 is posted on here as well....couldn't do one without doing the full track with part 2 included xxx

  • Did you do the 'Dreaming 22' version on 8/11/08 as that was as good if not better and for some reason it fell off the radar as I could not find it again for a little while.

    Great postings in any case.

  • @leadtheway678

  • just got back from the pub. Clutching my guitar plonked down in front of the PC to find something I can play along with and this just fits the bill. Thank you.

Anyone help with info to tell if its still on you tube.

  • Great tune! will never forget this one..

  • This song just sums up everything about my hometown, that crazy town that is Liverpool

  • i love this song.

  • great song,nice one

  • go on pete one word for him legand

  • one of the greatest songs ever written...

  • Well that's my story and I'm sticking to that, lets sit down and talk about the blues, the blues is about dignity, it's about self respect.....

  • its real music not people from Xfactor singing music and words from a kareoki machine

  • Indeed bro. I fucking hate all that xfactor, fame academy britains got talent piss!

  • me too, loved this tune by whah takes me back to me teenage years!!!!!

  • What a classic tune !!!!! absolutely brilliant x

  • great great song

  • Yeah. Most of the music these days is crappy covers of great songs. Or worse. Long live Metal, Rock and New Wave.

  • luv this song im 12 but me mum luvs it its great !!!!

  • I first heard this song living in Worcester, working in a chemist's called Archibald Cowe. It moved me so much I went straight to Viking Records to buy it. It was there I met a guy called Ben who is still a friend. He's so witty and wise that my life has improved by up to 58% since that chance meeting in Viking. Thanks Pete Wiley...Jonathan Smith...the Wah truly were Mighty...

  • im 24 .i love this song.all my mates takre the piss lol....anyway what a great song

  • this song puts the heckles up on my neck some great memories love it

  • Greta video!! and yes i sang along ..many thanks JD.

  • This song is so beautiful. I was about 7 when it came out but i had older sisters who listened to it all the time. I didn't get the lyrics till a few years later. Still sounds brilliant. Thanks for posting.

  • Fantastic song, that will never age

  • Wylie is a god!! :) And A big fan of Billy MacKenzie too,2 great things from one man! :)(well as a third,he stands his round if you buy him a pint!!)

  • Great choice of song & great choice of pic's Victoria Frances is a brilliant artist..

  • Wow! One of my favourite songs of the 80's, got the full version on 12" vinyl at my bro's place! Played it a while back and I was 16 again! Now, at 42, it sounds just as good if not better! Well done on the vid too, nice one! :)

  • OMG this brings back some great memories... thanks!

  • Thanks for putting this on - had forgotten about this song - it's wonderful! I have also spotted a couple of stray apostrophes in your lyrics - would you like to know where they are?

  • I know exactly where they are thank you for your kind offer of assisting me....the lyrics were just copied and pasted from another website! I will correct them all when I post Part 1 & 2 of this song together in the near future!

  • @damnedlikebeauty wow.carnt top this xxx

  • Good images accompanying a great song. Loved the video and lyrics. Hope you do another from the 80's (preferably with incomprehensible lyrics.) I've been singing that opening line for ever but never got any further than that. Thanks for filling the gaps!

  • I had the same problem for years with Party Fears 2 by the Associates so I did the video in the end just so I had an excuse to look up the real lyrics not the ones I made up in 1982

  • Weird? I was going to suggest 18 carat love affair by The Associates as your next one!

  • Brilliant, can't stop playing it again.

    My first ever 45 bought.

  • good song back in the day.kissy kissy ;

  • first they take your pride. gotta be about a woman. bitches. still you gotta love em.

  • Try substituting 'Felling browbeaten' for "Minute by minute" ..... then you've got perfection ............

  • sorry I've checked numerous lyric sites including Pete Wylies official site with his take on the lyrics and the songs and they all state feeling browbeaten as the correct words!

  • really ? bin singing along wrong all these years then and it did seem logical to precede 'day by day' by minute by minute(absence of 'hour by hour' accepted).

Think there may be typo 'felling' rather than 'feeling' ...... Used to have 'Come Back' on 12" vinyl too ... is that version on here anywhere?? ........ Fantastic Post btw brings back a whole heap of memories re: the then Liverpool Poly SU Bar in late '82 !!!

  • Brilliant tune. The punctuation is awful though.

  • Hey I only copied and pasted the lyrics from another site so don't blame me....

  • Makes me cry.

  • That is so moving. I always like the song...and with those pictures and the words showing like that, it made me cry.

  • Great Song - and a #3 hit. Interestingly, Julian Cope, Wylie's 'Crucial 3' cohort panned this song in his book 'Head On'.

  • probably because he's never written anything even half as good.

  • brings back so many memories! Fantastic! Love it, Thank you!

  • Wicked Song!

Does anybody remember a version of this where Pete Wylie does spoken word parts over some of the song. I think it might be called Story of the Booze but I could be wrong.

  • That was on the B side of this single, if I remember rightly. I think it was called Story Of The Blues Part 2 (Talking Blues)

  • No it was called story of the blues part 2 and was on the b side of the 7" single....I have part 1 and 2 as one song and might one day add part 2 to this video

  • pure class, i love this song. the lyrics say it all.

  • agree with so many.. this is the kinda song that says 80s to me, not all the bullshit they pile onto the compilation albums they ever bring out, total classic many thanks for posting it!! xx

  • totally agree with you on that,i remember loads of groups that should be on so called 80s compilations

  • Happy memories of 1983!!!

  • Bring it all back instead of all the bollocks that,s out 2day.

  • no argument here mate!!!!

  • janeyeyre, I get those same bubbles and smile............

  • this was the 80's, the song leaves bubbles in my stomach and a smile on my face, the days that were ;-)

  • Yea, great times, great music. Proper cars and sexy women.

  • bubbles in your stomach....you may need some Windeze
