The typical progression of a tooth requiring root canal surgery is: Tooth needs a root canal and the root canal is completed. After approximately 6-12 months, there is still an infection at the bottom of the root. The tooth is then retreated (the same tooth has the root canal redone). If the tooth does not heal after the root canal is redone, then a surgical procedure can be done.
