The ship was actually so badly damaged - as my uncle, the L.I. (=Leadng Engineer) Carl Klepp has stated that the ship would and could not survive another battle, even with 'no other Allied ships out there', forget about returning to Germany. Langsdorff thus savedthe lifes of several hundred seamen!
What we know now is that a british shell had destroyed the equipment needed to clean the Spee's diesel fuel. At most she could have gone a further thrity miles and then been a sitting duck, pounded to eventual destruction. No, her captain did the best thing, the only thing, the honourable thing... and paid a heavy price for it!
Der Graffen Spee was tricked into being scuttled by her own captain, German intelligence fell for British ploy that made them think their situation was more hopeless than it truly was, good job Brits.
lol that's kind've retarded on their part to say that. Captain Langsdorff committed suicide after sending a last message back home. He was ashamed if anything that he could not do more than he already amazing accomplished. Graf Spee is an amazing ship!
In 1939 the RNZN did not officially exist, it was the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy, so strictly speaking the term HMS is correct, not that it matters much these days. As a matter of interest the Director Control Tower (damaged by the Graf Spee) and a six-inch turret from Achilles are preserved at the Museum of Transport and Technology in Auckland, NZ.
litt. Correct. What is not correct is that they call it a British victory. The tend to forget the New Zealand contribution, and only mention the Exeter and the Ajax. The Exeter actually withdrew defeated from the battle. They were treated as heroes. Typical English!
It's not a video, it is a slide show. Thanks for wasting my time :-(

An interesting ship with an amazing history indeed. It will be fascinating to see how much they salvage of her. That class was quite revolutionary.

Well I'm not suprised Exeter withdrew.
After being hit by 7 28cm shells.
Cruisers werent designed to be hit by those monsters.
It was a British victory but
HMNZS Achilles got plenty of recognition and her contribution certainly was remembered. There is plenty on her on the web too.
