@BringerOfD Yep thats cause character design is by Hisashi Hirai, designer for Seed and Seed Destiny. Tow Ubukata (penned stories for Chaos Legion) is about as different from Chiaki Morosawa as you get. The story is haunting and the mechs are obviously not gundam, the effects and art design are one of a kind, melding cg with lush cell drawings. must see i reckon

@Geshpenst Just because the character designs are...to put it bluntly, lazy, doesn't mean the story isn't VERY good. In fact, I have been honestly surprised by this series...it has an Evangelion like feel to it and each episode keeps getting better and better.

Kazuki kinda looks like an Athrun Shinn mix, with extra Shinn for good (or bad, depending on your taste) measure.

Hirai did better with Scryed in my opinion. Kazuma felt unique in a way... Ryuhou, on the other hand looked like Gundam Seed DESTINY Kira... With green hair.

I haven't seen Heroic Age yet.

Hirai's characters are something of a guilty pleasure of mine. :P

The point still stands that character templates are recycled without much alteration. It's sloppy, but excused because I saw and liked the design I saw on another show BEFORE I watched this one. When you tell someone about one of Hirai's other works, you will reference the one that they've seen which is likely just Seed unless they're Otaku. The guy from the past may have been first, but I SAW the one from the future FIRST. It really doesn't matter. My point still stands. THEY look alike.

Well well. The internet thing was mainly a joke, my definition of otaku is very broad, and I can't really tell the difference between Seed and DESTINY Athrun, I referred to the character in general.

The old Gundam came in 79. America rarely payed attention to foreign programs until the 90s. So yeah, I would assume that American fans of the UC timeline were huge otaku. The dub came here in 01 and was pulled for lack of popularity.

@Florithia I agree that the art looks fantastic. I have always enjoyed Hirashi Hirai's artwork ever since Gundam Seed. (some of his characters look similar but he is still able to make them individuals)

@hijikata87 They haven't though. By the time he got to SEED the only change was he drew the eyes a little wider and didn't draw so many fat supporting characters. It's just a mixing and matching of face and hair style, they all look the same.

Kubo was a bad example : his style is present in all of them, but aside from Grimmjow and the Zombie Powder protag they're all easily discernible, especially compared to brunette-Rey and Shinthrun VS say, the entire cast of SEED

It's not hard for an anime to be as good as SEED/DESTINY you know. Most other Gundams for example are. And EVA kinda made it's niche and filled it completely, Anything that tries to be like EVA usually fails to understand what EVA was supposed to be. Grim Mecha anime work (RahXephone for example), but saying it's like EVA tends to miss the point.

@Omnicrom there is no "point". nothing tries to be like evangelion because every anime has its own story. matter of fact, rahxephon being an eva ripoff or anything like it is just a product popular opinion based on the fact that rahxephon is also an epic giant robot drama. most of the reason people even make that comparison is because they realize it's probably as good as, if not better than eva in its own genre.

Eva has a "point" it's a deconstruction of Mecha anime as a whole so an excellent anime like RahXephone which stands well on its own as a psychological anime is a done a disservice by tying it to something it's not trying to be. In addition many anime try to be like Eva in style or tropes to try and steal some of it's market share but like I said trying to steal tropes and style from a series that is deconstructing tropes and style as a whole makes you seem foolish.

@Omnicrom but evangelion wasn't created to deconstruct the mecha genre, and it doesn't have any sort of moral message or social commentary. it was just the product of a guy's animation turned into one of the greatest, most highly revered anime of all time. honestly, if rahxephon came first, it'd probably be shitting all over evangelion in popularity, but rahxephon has major eva influences, so that's kind of out of the question to begin with.
