as far as majoring with trumpet, how would this process be different?

@BradmanIII good question, its hard to say exactly because requirements for each instrument and each institution has its own protocol. The best thing you can do is to get to the school of music website and read over the audition page (all schools of music have this). If you don't know which college you are going to, then I recommend going to Juliard's audition site.
