This work of MAGIC must be between 1951-1955,(most likely 51) the only years Jhonny Hodges left the Duke, to lead his own band. Except for that period, Jeep / Rabbit didn't miss any performance never, I think.
this is MUSIC.....not the crap u listen to with your radio or the crap u listen while having a seizure looking at a strobe light for too long. As a trumpet player looking at this is the most amazing thing i could ever learn from......
I was looking at the copyright date--I read it as MCMXLIII--sorry, my eyes today show MCMLIII--1953. So you're right. Oh, BTW, white guys didn't invent screech trumpet.
Correct. That's exactly what Al Porcino said about Maynard when he first heard him. What bugs me is how little many younger players know about the history of the horn and the music. Especially guys like Al Killian, Freddy Webster, Howard Magee--to name only three. These guys could play, but for obvious reasons, a lot of great black players never make the radar screen. It's an injustice, just like saying white players never did anything original on the horn--which is why you're correct!
The title used is misleading; the cascade of solos from 2:02 onwards (starting with Willie Cook) is a tune called 'Jam With Sam', which Duke played at most concerts throughout the 50s and 60s
This was probably recorded in 1951 to early 1952 due to the presence of Louis Bellson (drums), Juan Tizol (valve trombone) and Willie Smith (alto sax). I like Duke's Blankety Blank microphone for his name calling

@IncaseCryGo The second piece is called Jam With Sam. FYI, these are not Duke's versions, he wrote them.
Google him and you'll find all kinds of stuff, including a radio station that plays all Duke.

This was made in 1943. How old was Maynard in 1943? and there were others: Al Killian, for one. White guys didn't invent screech trumpet.
rsalvucc 3 years ago
This was not 1943. More like 1951/2 after Johnny Hodges had left to form his own band. Ellington got Willie Smith from Harry James.

You're right, rsalvucc. But MF didn't do "screech", he actually played music up there. That's what he "invented".
