  • This is from a Snader Telescription, filmed Mar.14,1952.

Reeds: Harry Carney, Russell Procope, Paul Gonsalves, Willie Smith, Jimmy Hamilton.

Trumpets: Ray Nance, Cootie Williams, Clark Terry, Willie Cook.

Trombones: Juan Tizol, Quentin (Butter) Jackson, Britt Woodman.

Rhythm: Wendell Marshall (b), Louie Bellson (d), Duke Ellington (p).

Seven tunes were recorded in this session.

  • This work of MAGIC must be between 1951-1955,(most likely 51) the only years Jhonny Hodges left the Duke, to lead his own band. Except for that period, Jeep / Rabbit didn't miss any performance never, I think.

  • The 3 dislikers were kicked out of the VIP section

  • oh my god oh my god... what a band!!! Thanks very much Mister Ellington.

  • This music will make you get up and do it all again, raychapa01.

  • The person who put "Dont like", is because he was born without ears. Poor man.

  • Cat Anderson = ridiculous. Geezus.

  • Sick sick sick! these are some blowing so and so's.

  • Skillage farmin mansion house !!

  • Ellington's aesthetic is sui generis to American Art Music.

  • I didn't even know you could make that sound!

  • The Duke called me a very important person! I am truly honored

  • Harry Carney could be an entire sax section all by himself.

  • Crazy trumpets dude had to be atleast high g.... and does it sound like the saxes are out of tune or something solos didnt go with the music....

  • Crazy trumpets dude had to be atleast high g....

  • cat andeson is a fucking beast

  • That is probably the tightest unison I have ever heard.

  • the blowin' in this piece is just RIDICULOUS!!!! Damn.

  • @IManOBAMAmama its called , blowing LIFE into the pieces !! haha

  • @IManOBAMAmama--that's what she said.

  • this is MUSIC.....not the crap u listen to with your radio or the crap u listen while having a seizure looking at a strobe light for too long. As a trumpet player looking at this is the most amazing thing i could ever learn from......

  • @1EnA2 What do you play?

  • @pilchardman101 definitely the Duke

  • that's Cab Calloway not Duke Ellington

  • Man Cat Anderson tore it up!!!! Great musicians here.

  • Could someone name a disc with any of duke's versions of this song, please?

  • Btw that clarinet solo is unbeleivably amazing :O

  • @IncaseCryGo Dude...every solo is unbelievably amazing.

  • @IncaseCryGo The second piece is called Jam With Sam. FYI, these are not Duke's versions, he wrote them.

Google him and you'll find all kinds of stuff, including a radio station that plays all Duke.

  • massa :)

  • Duke is the best, greetings from croatia!!!

  • Duke had the hottest band of his time, every player was smokin', not a loser in the bunch.

  • damnnnnn!!!!

  • back when jazz was good

  • Their is still some good jazz out! You just need to know where to look!

  • YEEAAAAHHH! Russell Procope!

  • also good trumpet!

  • good saxophone and clarinet!

  • That is a Great video

    And an awesome trombone solo!!!!

  • wow duke ellington sounds amazing here

  • This was made in 1943. How old was Maynard in 1943? and there were others: Al Killian, for one. White guys didn't invent screech trumpet.

  • This was not 1943. More like 1951/2 after Johnny Hodges had left to form his own band. Ellington got Willie Smith from Harry James.

  • I was looking at the copyright date--I read it as MCMXLIII--sorry, my eyes today show MCMLIII--1953. So you're right. Oh, BTW, white guys didn't invent screech trumpet.

  • You're right, rsalvucc. But MF didn't do "screech", he actually played music up there. That's what he "invented".

  • Correct. That's exactly what Al Porcino said about Maynard when he first heard him. What bugs me is how little many younger players know about the history of the horn and the music. Especially guys like Al Killian, Freddy Webster, Howard Magee--to name only three. These guys could play, but for obvious reasons, a lot of great black players never make the radar screen. It's an injustice, just like saying white players never did anything original on the horn--which is why you're correct!

  • @rdangelo And his tone wasn't less powerful in the lower register!

  • damn, cat anderson can wail!

  • what's the name of the clarinet player?

i need it for my jazz band

  • Jimmy Hamilton.

  • You can hear it announced at about 1:25ish :P

  • Jimmy Hamilton

  • I need "Star-Crossed Lovers"!

  • wow.. cat anderson is amazing.. ahhh

  • that was lovely-fun lol

shame you dont see more of it mainstream these days

  • cool video. never what I expected the Duke's voice to sound like, though.

  • Yeah, and I need both of you to shut up.

  • what's the name of the trumbone player?

I need it for my jazz band

  • what's the name of the piano player?

i need it for my jazz band

  • this version makes more sense to the whole vip meaning of the song than the version with just bari and clari featured alone, which ends at 2:02

  • The title used is misleading; the cascade of solos from 2:02 onwards (starting with Willie Cook) is a tune called 'Jam With Sam', which Duke played at most concerts throughout the 50s and 60s

  • This was probably recorded in 1951 to early 1952 due to the presence of Louis Bellson (drums), Juan Tizol (valve trombone) and Willie Smith (alto sax). I like Duke's Blankety Blank microphone for his name calling

  • zomg soo leet

  • this is amazing

  • nice sax maybe a little to much wood wind at the begginging sorry if you dont agree or if i'm wrong i'm new to the whole jazz thing

  • these guys r gr8
