Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous... my favorite movement from all six of the suites, and Jian Wang is possibly the best interpreter I've heard (and I've heard a lot). This music speaks for itself; it doesn't need a lot of vibrato. And it's not really tuned down a half-step; rather, he's tuned to A = 415 Hz, which is standard Baroque tuning, instead of our modern 440 Hz. It's almost exactly a half-step, though. I also notice that he's playing his 1622 Amati cello, not his David Wiebe.

He kinda copied yo yo ma cuz hes the one who first tuned his cello a half step down. but only maybe because he played that one 6th suite where you have to tune your cello a half step down . i can never get my fingerings right cuz you have finger G in 1st position with your 4th finger to get an "F#" sound out of the cello :P
Ah, this is beautiful! I love how this is so simple and clean. It's refreshing to hear after listening to other interpretations that just have too much rubato and vibrato. And I think he may have tuned his instrument to a lower A, possibly A416. I'm not sure but I think it's the standard tuning for baroque performance.
Goodnight !

@volk410 There is nothing else beyond Maurice Gendron's version.

he needs to add a little more vibrato

If his tuning is any evidence, he might be trying for a more authentic performance by playing how he thinks one would in Bach's time.

Baroque musicians didn't play with much vibrato, so this is staying true to how they would have played it.
I personally think that it sounds better with more vibrato also, but I still think that this is still beautiful and powerful without vibrato.

tuning it a half step down is a baroque thing... he didn't "copy" yo yo ma.

@cl427x what I don't understand is yo-yo ma, playing Kodály one half step down

Why would you tune your strings down for the sixth suite? There's an abundance of places where you'd want to use open strings.

are his strings tuned down like maybe a half step? it sounds different
celloguy27 3 years ago
It sounds different because he is such an incredible artist. AND his strings are about half-step down.

This is good, look up Tortelier and Bylsma for amazing interpretations.

Not sure if I like Tortelier that much nowadays and although Bylsma has some amazing bowings, his playing does not touch me.
