  • Uncle Wally was my Dad's best friend for about 65'yrs.From their child hood, to my Dad's death. The fact is Dad was to marry his sister Aunty,Florence.

I remember as a kid, how he comes to our house once a month, with the guitar on his shoulder,& a pint in his hand. To have a baila session. And this is one of his favourites.

So when I hear this song, it brings me golden memories.! R.I.P.Uncle Wally.

He's singing about his viola. I too only ever saw him at the 'Malpiyali' musical show at Tudella church feast back in the early 70s. Did you see him in Wattala? If so when? Thanks for the comment!!

  • uncanny skill with the violin... this is so awesome compared to any new Sinhalese song... so independent of Indian music and so unique...

how come we don't come across such talent anymore?

  • Fully agree. Elian Soyza's music with Rocksamy's violin. Wally is one of the three legends who made a revolution in Sinhala music. Other two are Sunil Santha and Clarence Wijewardane. Thanks for the comment !!

  • thats pretty simple, every idiot in the country is listening to cheesy hindi music. Even the Sinhala radio stations broadcasts hindi music.

  • Thank you brother for the comment and visiting my site. Back in the 60s and early 70s, Sinhalese (native Sri Lnkan lagnuage) music was based on Mexican and Paraguayan music styles and Mariachi, even today very popular!!!

  • I love original Baila, I love original Hip Hop and Rock. WE always love the original artists. I hate the copy cats and the people who try to change the original tracks for their own existence.

  • Fully agree. Nothing like the originals.

    Thanks for the comment !!

  • Rap is different art... Baila is a different art... don't try to compare two different arts together... but hats off for this magnificent performance... love baila...

  • Agreed. Thanks for the comment !!

  • why can't the modern singers follow this path than getting their knickers in a twist in an unkwown rap.

    So beautiful to ears.

Thanks Jude for your great effort in bringing this classics to modern day.

    regards

    Vidhura

  • Hello Goonewj,

I humbly request to you to make this video available on the internet.

    Alspurs

  • Hi Alspurs, thanks for the comment !! What do you exactly mean by making it available on the internet ?

  • Hi Goonewj,

Ah, the video was not available for my listening pleasure. The notice attached said that it was removed by you.Anyway, Im glad that it is back on. Thank you goonewj, god bless you. May the great sri lankan singers of yester years never be forgotten.

    Alspurs

  • Hi Alspurs,

I think that was an issue or some kind of a delay or timeout on Youtube or the links. I too experienced that a few times on other videos.

Thank you very much for you interest in Sri Lankan music. I have updated the description of the song with the meaning of the song. May god bless you !!

    Jude

  • Classic

  • Thank You!!

  • Greetings, Goonewj

I read in some old books that there´s an old Sri Lankan guitar named "viaule", with 12 strings.....you know this instrument? I am asking it because we have here in Brazil this same guitar, with the same name.

I would like to ask if there´s still any old folk baila or kaffringha being sung in Portuguese.

    Emerson

  • Hello Emerson,

Thanks for the comment. I have not come across this guitar in Sri Lanka. I was under the impression that Wally Bastian was singing about his Viola. May be I am wrong here. I will definitely investigagate.

    Best Regards,

    Jude

  • ohh my god is this wally Bastian i cant believe it

the legend of sri lankan music

  • Thanks. Have you tried sinhalajukebox site ?

  • yh i went on it but it seems i cant download it frm my computer.....:(

if theres anyway u could upload it on to youtube i would be ever so greatful!!

    thanks all da same...

  • you must have real player 6 for that, iyts all free man, most good things are free

  • ohhh ok I was just wondering because My last name is Bastian too and I'm Basque...

  • No worries. We have a lot of Portugese and Spanish words in our dialect. Since Basque has some Spanish influence too, perhaps there might be a very long distant connection !! Its good to hear from you!!

  • is that basque?

  • Thanks. No, it is Baila. Language is Sinhalese, the native language only spoken in Sri Lanka. The genre Baila is a mixture of Portugese and African (Kaffir) music adapted into Sinhalese music on 6/8 rythm by the late Mr. Wally Bastian. Baila is the most popular dance music in Sri Lanka.

  • yeah yeah man you are great I love bailar, it is beautiful, I just dont like those Katherine names, but its the name of the people who made it first sio I have respect

  • Wally ur a BALLER!!!!

  • Thank You!

  • Thanks dude..was looking for it everywhere..I got d Saman De Silva's version but thi is way better than that..thanks again..

  • You are welcome! Wally is the man!

  • This song is gold. Thanks for uploading my friend :) Oldies are the best, now music is crap.. :(

  • Thanks. Fully agree with you!

  • Jude,

This the first version, I can identify Mr Rocksamy,s STRADIVARIUS violin solo. Music director was Aelian soysa the famous Harmonium player of Victors "Podikumarihamy" song.

Lovely, I requested this from many friends, but never knew that you had it.

    Thanks for posting

    Palitha

  • Thanks Palitha. Agree that this is the first version, however, I would not call it the original, as it has been digitally enhanced by Torana.

  • Jude,

According to my experience the enhancement is they have dubbed electric bass, clappers, tabla and a little percussion effect on top of the original double bass, rabana etc. But still no damage for the original. This was a common practice in SL to increase the trebles and bass levels in yesteryear records.

I think Aruna will add a little more on that.

    Palitha

  • That definitely makes sense Palitha. I could not see that the original music is disturbed in any way. Thanks for the clarification.

    Jude

  • Hi All,

This is the first version may have been enhanced with a little rythem touch, I can identify Mr Rocksamy's STRADIVARIUS original violin solo.Music is directed by Aelian Soysa the famous harmonium player of Victors "Podikumarihamy" song.

Thanks Jude good job, in fact I requested this from many friends, never knew that you would have it.

    Palitha

  • Thanks Palitha. I do have the original somewhere in SL, that I myself copied from a 45RPM vinyl to a spool. I could hardly notice any difference in this version, apart from the pops and clicks have been removed. I will ask my bro to try locating the original if he can.

  • Jude,

Thanks for sharing this. Just one quick question...did you take this from a vinyl or from the album Torana has released..?? The album Torana released has music reproduced by Rajiv Sebastian.

    -Aruna

  • Hi Aruna,

Thanks. This is the Torana version. However, I have a version that was copied from the original vinyl myself in SL, and its pretty much the same apart from the clicks and pops filtered out on the Torana version. I don't think that this one has been dubbed over.

    Jude

  • Dear Jude,

If you read the album's back cover, it states music reproduced under the supervision of Rajiv Sebastian & coordinated by Vernon Perera. My guess is they have over dubbed the music. They did the same thing to C. T. Fernando's albums.

    Regards,

    Aruna

  • Sure Aruna. I too noticed that, but on this track I could not find any difference apart from that it is of better quality than a typical vinyl track. So you may be right that it might have been digitally enhanced.

    Jude

  • Many thanks for the clarification.

    - Aruna
