There should be a national holiday in honor of this woman. Jackson was one of the greatest woman to have ever lived, with a voice that absolutely nobody can hold a torch to (Whitney, Mariah, and all the rest who so generously borrowed from Jackson's style). In addition to having one of the most amazing voices ever, Jackson held true to her religious beliefs by refusing to sing secular music, & was also very involved in the Civil Rights Movement. All other singers live & sing in her shadow.
I am in tears.I have a son named Daniel who has not been home in many years. He is in California and calls me at least 2 x a week.I do not know why he will not come home and does not want me to know his address. He knows where I am.I pray that he will come home alive to see the family.Pray for us.
i love mahalia jackson, has the most beautiful and dynamic voice, sounds of an angel.... that will just make u cry.... but in the same sense fill you will that warm feeling.
I haved tears in my eye's listening to this wonderful song and I can remember my beloved Mother singing it to me when I was a little boy.Thank you for posting it.
Mahalia rarely sang songs about the love between two people, preferring to sing songs about God's love or songs of fellowship and social betterment. But she wanted to sing "Danny Boy" because she thought it was so beautiful.
Great to find Mahalia Jackson sing that Irish song which I hear from her for the first time, although I've been her fan from a very early age ! Thanks for posting !
[Part 1 of 2] The countless adaptations of "The (London)Derry Air," a traditional Irish ballad — as well as the hundreds of larger-than-life singers who've recorded it (e.g., Frank Patterson, Mario Lanza, John McCormack, and of course Mahalia) have rendered this song a cliché for some. Not so! For me its unsurpassable popularity simply attests to its timeless beauty. [comment cont'd below ...]
[Part 2 of 2] Ultimately, of course, it was the Victorian/Edwardian English lawyer/composer Frederic Edward Weatherly (1848-1929) (who never even set foot in Ireland!) whose words "Oh Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling ..." would prevail. Yet no one who loves Mahalia's immortal rendition should miss the opportunity to hear the entirely different lyrics of John McCormack's poignant rendition "O Mary Dear" (posted by jwbos1388

Mahalia challenged herself. . . with very positive results. She didn't constrain herself. . . if she liked it, she sang it.
