@hooperX101 and don't forget, James "Slick" Street, the Longhorns' starting quarterback, was an ineligible player for this game. He had dropped all his courses in October 1969 due to the pressure he was under. No wonder the Southwest Conference disintegrated after many succeeding scandals!
A few days before the 1970 Cotton Bowl, one reporter noticed that Texas was un-integrated. So this intrepid scribe, according to Steve Delsohn's "Talking Irish: The Oral History of Notre Dame Football," asked coach Darrell Royal why he had no black players on his team. A defiant Royal quipped: "I've won without 'em and I'll continue to win without 'em."
Ariama, what are you talking about? ND had black players, including captains, before MANY of their D1 football counterparts. And, as for Mr. Ty, are you saying ND is racist for firing a mediocre coach who was a lousy recruiter? I guess you feel the same way about Washington, too, since they fired Ty after 3 years? At least ND hired a black head coach. How many D1 football schools have - especially the historical powerhouse programs? So easy to play the race card without critical thinking.
Joe Kuharich got five years? Really? What about Hugh Devore? How many did Bob Davie get after he signed a contract extension? One! Terry Brennan, a former ND All-American, got canned on Christmas Eve.
I think Weis was a lousy head coach but he was a FAR better recruiter than Willingham. Again, how many other D1 powerhouses have even hired a black coach?
Frank Broyles- classy guy even in defeat and when he was in the broadcast booth, he was also the AD at Arkansas, the Petrino mess would not happen on his watch.
1969 was the first year I really started watching the Longhorns. Not that I really had a choice as I come from a family full of Orangebloods. Great memories!!
I'll always remember this game as one that while the better team won, the more deserving one lost. Frank Broyles to this day cannot watch this game as it was truly(and understandbly) a heartbreaker.
#$@&(% Longhorns. Sat in the north endzone of razorback stadium that day. Razorbacks were ahead until the very end. The worst day of my life, and the life of every Razorback fan old enough to remember it.
This is back then when National Champions were awarded during the last game of the season not the usual after the bowl game. Some said that Penn State should of shared that National Championship, but Texas deserved it that year and having Richard Nixon presenting the trophy makes it the difference plus it was 1 vs. 2 so whoever won that game that day should of been crowned champions.
what people forget that psu was invited to play in the cotton bowls against the winner of this game but the cotton bowl commitee wouldn't let the black players of psu play so they instead played in the orange bowl which the won beating mizzou. in my opinion they both should national champs
OMG, I've read about that too. The funny thing is that I think he got out of coaching because he needed to recurit black athletes and did not want too.
Not true. As someone who was part of this team, I knew Coach Royal and he was happy to recruit blacks. He recruited and coached this one fellow I remember named Earl Campbell. Get your facts straight.
It is a fact....you know it. He had a few Blacks on his team, but not enough to compete at the highest level! Royal is a racist and have the proof!!! Got my facts straight, clown!!!
I see it's been a year but you should check your facts dude. First, PSU declined the invitation because they wanted to go to Miami. Second, we played ND with a number of black players so, Eric, why didn't the Cotton Bowl reject them?
I second that! -- last I saw that locker room scene was 38 years ago as a 15 year old horn fan glued to the TV screen. Most excitement experienced to that point.
Great scene! College football is great!

@pressmymenu
only way texas wins is by using the old texas refs
just like they did against ark in the Old SWC by clipping the shit out of our defense on the last run of the game

It is funny hearing an Aggie complaining about UT being racist. Texas A&M does not have room to talk about its racist past.

Neither does Notre Dame with its past then and now concerning Mr. Ty.

Hail Charlie Weiss or Gerry Faust? Oh yeah, Joe Kuharich. huh. They got five years due to N.D. B.S. principle. Ty only got three years.

What a load of crap - Texas already had black scholarship football players on the freshman team that year.

Yes, Huston Street is the son of James Street.

Thanks for the stroll down memeory lane. I just sent this to my dad. We saw this game together in our living room when I was 13 years old!
It was a great bonding experience.
