  • we didn't and don't dance like this. I'm notfull blood or anything, but I've grown up in cherokee territory Oklahoma, where the culture is pretty significant. Cherokees didn't adorn in feathers until settlers came and wanted to see the feathers and everything that's really steriotypical native american...sometimes they wore roaches, but that's it. Still, it's a neat video.

  • His Bustle Feathers should NEVER touch the ground, and a TRUE Traditional Dancer would NOT DANCE BACKWARDS for any reason, because Dancing Backwards means the Dancer is WEAK, and Traditional DO NOT DANCE WITH BACK STEPS

  • Nothing about this dance is Cherokee - this is a plains Indians style "northern traditional" dance. All you people claiming to be Cherokee & saying this is a Cherokee dance need to learn the culture that you are claiming!!! Keetoowah13 is correct, it's a plains traditional dance and WE DID NOT LIVE IN TIPIS!!!

  • Cherokee women ruled the tribes............not men. This is fake and all you will see in NC. Nothing is real about it, its all for show and money. Ignorant people think it is real. The Cherokee didn't even wear clothes like that. The majority had top knots of hair and as I said before the women ruled the tribe.

  • @HoneyAndSulfur1991 I am ignorant, but I want to learn. Can you suggest a reliable source of information so that I do not see and learn lies? Thanks!

  • @cataubawoman I suggest going to museums. I learned many things from actual native Americans. I had a college professor who was full blooded Cherokee and she showed us pictures and things like that of real native Americans. She lived on a reservation to at some point in her life.

  • Ok for one this is an authentic Cherokee dance it is a religious dance it is not fake stop being a dick and putting down my people I am full blooded Cherokee and just because u are a dumb ass doesn't mean u have to act like one if u didn't like the video then fuck off and stop bein rude u can be pale and cherokee and to the person speaking Cherokee hello to you to

  • the guys just really gotta shit so hes shaking it out of his ass

  • thats not cherokee. it may have been filmed in Cherokee NC and the dancer may be cherokee but the dance is not cherokee. It looks more northen traditional or northern grass.

  • Turkey Dance? agvnasgo?

  • im 1/3 cherokee but evryone says i hav the cheek bones i would lik 2 meet with someone in person 2 see i think nowadays evryone would love 2 be an american indian its much more pride than it used 2 be wen people wer frowned opon for being a diffrnt race peace love happines ima hippy i lov evrybody lol

My Mother`s Family Decided To Live Like Tha White People So Nothn Would Happn To Them.! I Am Living In The West Virginia Moutains On My Familys Reservation.! Cherokee Pride :) .!

  • 2/16 cherokee and proud!! not a lot,but i both my great great grandmothers were full cherokee.

  • Beautiful.

  • Where is Sonny? I want to see my buddy Sonny.

  • THIS IS TRULY WONDERFUL AND I WOULD LIKE TO SEE MORE FROM THESE INDIANS PLEASE...EITHER WRITE ME OR JOIN ME...MY GRANDFATHER WAS APACHE AND I GUESS I HAVE THAT BLOOD STILL...TRULY AMAZING THANKS

  • so beautiful dance and video :)

  • i am cherokee and proud of it if anyone could tell me hoe to look up where to trace my indian roots i would be grateful thanks and godbless

  • Amazing. I really love my Native American roots and I'm proud to say I have some cherokee (I am not alot sadly and wish I had more in my blood). When I get older I plan on learning more about the Cherokee culture

  • WADO I LOVE IT !!!!!!!!!

  • My great great great Grandmother on my moms side was I think full blooded Cherokee, and i'm also part indian on my dads side from somewhere

  • Oh. I go to the Cherokee Reservation every year in North Carolina. I'm like 85% Cherokee and my mom is full blood. The Tourist trap thing is kinda annoying as like some of you say Cherokee didn't live in Teepee's which is absolutely correct. It's just stupid how most people symbolize every Native American with a teepee. -.-; Usually the plains indians lived in teepees. I've always loved Cherokee, NC though. ^^

  • he could be a great shuffler or jerker

  • I am FULL Cherokee.! My culture is so amazing.!!! :) nd wow alot othr cultures took the american indians dances. Cause it deff looks similar to crumpn nd blood walks nd crip walks.! CHEROKEE PRIDE.!!!!!!!

  • @Blad3AkaRiah REALLY I have never actually seen a full native american befor and I am part cherokee is your tribe the biggest native american tribe?!?!?!?!

  • @Blad3AkaRiah Aawesome!! I am puertorrican, living in Ohio. I have ahuge mix of races in my veins, including spaniard, italian, african and even some Taino (puertorrican natives). I have always felt a lot of admiration and simpathy towards native americans. I wish I was one of them!

  • @Blad3AkaRiah i wont say tht, cos ur dance too is similar to some African dance, so the Bloods, Cribs and Crump might have borrowed from their ancestors.

  • @Blad3AkaRiah check the Mogwana video response i've posted.

  • @Blad3AkaRiah why are there more full blooded Indigenous people in Mexico or any other place in Latin America?

  • i am going to learn this dance <3. long live cherokee

  • It's the English version of how they perceived all native tribes. The man dancing here should have objected to the teepee.

  • @akbaggett 100000% agree. The natives of the eastern woodlands from Georgia to Maine DID NOT live in tepees. So why would they put one up there? To appease the whites? The same goes for the eagle-feathered war bonnets and the singing styles in other eastern based shows.

  • you need to rename this " cherokee invented the cripwalk " lol

  • pretty sure this is a plains dance.... Looks like what i always see exhibited by kiowa and lakota dancers at our pow wow's.

  • Really... a friggin Tipi! thats for like... WAYYY down north. Long houses and wigwams were normally used up here in the south. im %100 Mohawk and its awesome being a part of the amazing 6 :) Cherokee's awesome too :D

  • Keep on dancing, its really good :)

  • Comment removed

  • I am truly honoured .....thank you X ....

  • I am like 65% cherokee and I ahnd made all of my traditional cherokee clothing all from the headress to the mocassins

  • This is the origina C-walk. The great Cherokee has the rythm.

  • The store owners are white and won't listen to us when we try to tell them to take them down. Now as for the dancer, Shawn is a good hearted person. He's part Lakota so he'sdoing what he learned. Also, he had a head injury when he was young so we let him be...he's a wonderful human being. He walks to work everyday with his cup of coffee and talks to everyone. Your right I live in a tourist trap...can't wait till I'm in council business people won't like me too much.

  • his dance is very fluid

  • that poor bustle.....

  • nice

  • Traditional Dancers DO NOT DANCE BACKWARDS during their dances, so what the hell was that? I dance Traditional Dance and that was a mockery. NO FAN OR WEAPON EITHER. Bustle was almost at his feet, hanging off his ass.

  • This is not a Cherokee Dance. it's typical tourist eye candy which has been used since the 40's and 50's .

  • hi ricky

  • Cherokee were STOMP DANCERS. This is just a showcase of a powwower, kinda dancing a Northern Bustle Dance, which is Northern Plains. Well, he's dressed Northern... but dancing grass...... I am confused. Look at Spookynative's comments below.

This might have been done in Cherokee Country, but he ain't dancing like a Cherokee, and I know they never lived in Tipis.

  • This video is all kinds of wrong. It's sad and weird and... A totem pole, tipi, war bonnet? What kind of song is the guy singing? Are they performing at a gas station? It looks as if you've thrown together a bunch of stereotypically Indian things and mixed them all together to give us this retarded 2 minute video. You fail.

  • He's dancing like a Lakota.. That's Northern Traditional.. with grass dance moves.. wtf?

And our tribe NEVER lived in Tipis. This dance is to be found NOWHERE in our culture.

Most of us today that do dance powwows dance Southern Straight or Southern Traditional.

Most of us also do Stomp Dance.

If you want to see REAL Cherokees (not those who think they're cherokee cause their great gramma was 1/8th), Check out the Warriors of Anikituhwa. They're badass!

  • @spookynative Your people never did wear war bonnets right? Seen the guy playing the drums wearing one.

  • He may be IN Cherokee North Carolina, but the dance is not a Cherokee style any more than the tepee is. Good fancy dancing! It's probably from the Festival of Native Peoples from all over. See the totem pole from the Pacific northwest in the back right side?

  • haha he looks like a chicken

  • haha he looks like a chicken

  • where is this? It looks like the Cherokee reservation in North Carolina near Maggie valley...

  • @spongebobslushpants1 yes it is

  • @spongebobslushpants1 yeah and thats guys name is shaun lol(:

  • My father is 1/8 cherokee and no cherokee person would do this unless getting paid or while high.

  • is that all you indians do in life is dance in circles?

  • @tubedude101 Yeah, white people are better cuz they dance in squares?

  • i'm not even remotely native american ( I live in europe) but I absolutely love their sence of being, and how they connect to the earth. their culture music and dance.

  • Im mainly cherokee and german , i like the dance and the beat

  • Does anyone know the exact location in Cherokee, NC that this video was shot? My family and I will be going there, and I would like to see these dances.

  • @mrsmullins you can find dancers throughout cherokee, especially during the summer evenings and nights

  • @TennesseeNurselady I just got back from there, and saw three Indian dances. They were pretty much the same, but I enjoyed them.

  • I would like to know those who think I look Native or not because I was told my father is 1/8 Native and my mother is 1/6 Native. I would like to know if I look like I am Native American in any way to you.

  • I am a half cherokee and black!

  • @HollisterBeauty2025 so am i i really dont kow too much about them but i will find out

  • I'll tell you!

  • @HollisterBeauty2025 I think that is a beautiful combination of races.

  • Great Dancing!!!

  • I loved it. Does this dance have a certain name?

  • they just put up tipis cause thats what the public is use to seeing when they think of indians. like these others said on here, Cherokee didn't live in tipis. from what i've read none of the eastern indians did. only the western indians. further educate me if i'm missing something here

  • im mixed with black & cherokee my grandparents are 100% cherokee but they died before i was born so don't know much about my culture and want to learn i do know that im eastern band cherokee but yh i wanna kno more

  • wow great video! I read the comments and did people forget that the man dancing is 93 years old!!!!! wow that's amazing! Also My great grandmother was full cherokee, also "Muslim" is not a people its a people of a religion. Followers of Islam. Now its says in the Tanakh, bible and quran that god made adam and eve the first man and woman. Maybe that's what they are talking about. I'm a Muslim also. Now where the cherokee people where before america I do not know. I would like to find out though.

  • Osiyo...!

I really enjoyed your Dance video..! Perhaps a song by same name gets its roots from it ....the song by Garth Brooks. Lol.

    Best wishes

    WADO

  • this would be a cherokee dance you ass....can you not see that? muslim? um... hardly muslim. why are people so ignorant?

  • k - uummmm... which style of dance is going on in this vid...LMAO

  • I usually don't like the modern-ish powwow regalia over 1910 or so, but I have to say that is one awesome regalia you have!

  • CHEROKEE PRIDE!!!!

  • i love being Cherokee

  • Im full blooded Cherokee. The guy on the drum is my father, the guy in the background standing in front of the teepee is my brother, and the person dancing is our good buddy sean.

  • Cherokee haven't lived in teepee's for over 200 years, they put teepee's up to symbolize how far the Cherokee nation has grown. Whoever is reading this comment you've learned something new.

Oh, and i'm 50% Cherokee. Peace be with Everyone.

  • I have always heard from my grandfather that we have lived in wigwams.

  • I thought the Cherokee had lived in "round houses" made of a lashed branch framework, a layered or thatched roof and walls made of grass or cattail reed mats, and a dried mud inner wall.

  • My grandparents have all ways told me that. I do not think round houses are movable and us Cherokee were nomadic, well that is what I have been taught by my family. There are alot of inaccuracies in text books and in museums.

  • Peace brother, from the East band Cherokee Nation

  • Were the Cherokee originally Muslim? Reason I ask is becuase a LOT of idiots are supporting the theory that the Native Americans come from Islamic and Arab groups (there's a LOT of websites supporting this). I am asking ALL Cherokees and other Native Americans for support becuase this sounds like BS to me. (I am half Cuzcatlec BTW)

  • im half cherokee i did my resurch and we came from india

  • you're not a Cherokee and you're a moron.

  • ooh yea muslim ok yea we came from muslim yea im the moran look at you bitch

  • yes, you are a moron.

  • righttt um gtfo plz

  • you are and you're not cherokee

  • Of course it's total BS. The Muslims are rewriting History. If anything, most comentaries try to link the Cherokee with the Jewish Expultion of Sanhariv (Assyria). So we are suppose to be from The Gad Tribe (one of the 10 lost tribes of Israel). However, the proofs are weak at most. Maybe in the future the DNA will map out the true origins. But Oral history says we come from the North, Osage.

    O'say'u

  • LOL wow....you replied too late..I made a video proving that we are NOT African, Arab, white, or Hebrew and etc.... we are mongoloid at the MOST! backed it up with DNA evidence

  • @redmanj75 Are you Eastern or Western band, my friend? I am Eastern Band.

  • @redmanj75 ?>yeah...because most native americans like to call themselves red men...idiot.

  • @redmanj75 uhmmmm...i dont think cherokees have lived in teepees for over... forever

  • Comment removed

  • @redmanj75 More than that. By being of the Iroquoian group they probably made some sort of Longhouses more than Teepee's. Teepee's were more common on the plainsgroup and nomadic Natives. Look for James Moore's book.

  • @redmanj75 look I am as well Tsalagi from Qualla N.C. rez. WE NEVER EVER LIVED IN TEEPEE'S

we lived in 1st caves, then lodges, then homes .

The reason so many now days use a teepee is it is a good tent to travel and stay in at powwow's ect

  • @mzjohnna100 At Qualla, tipis also are great for meeting tourist expectations. Most of the general public still accepts the stereotype that all American Indians lived in them and wore headdresses and beaded buckskin. It's as if we all came from the same cookie cutter with no cultural differences between tribes. For good or bad, this misperception provides an economic benefit for our people.

  • @mzjohnna100

    Osiyo,

Thank you for the comment. Many people thing our people lived in Teepees when in fact we built villages and had what many would today call City Hall.

  • Of course I know about the eagle feather, but that wasn't what this comment was about . I have learned something new and for that I am always grateful. But, my comment was for those thoughts much deeper than that. I have a deep mind, and I always analyze things in a different depth than others. My bad... But, I'm just looking at this as a beautiful dance. The meaning of it, the meaning of it as a whole. Not finding fault with anything. I would find it a gift if I could dance that way.

  • i went there

  • To finish my other comment with a quote from one of my favorite Cherokee authors... "Only when you have had nothing can you appreciate everything, and how can you tell the difference? "- NIghtland Hicks- Cherokee

When walking the RedRoad, walk it with pride and passion.

    Peace to everyone.

  • Don't know the whole story of this video, but the other comments dishearten me a little. Maybe it was intertribal, hence the tipi? His bustle being too low, maybe that works for him, or maybe it did fall off and it was a last minute thing??? I don't care what his regalia looks like, I want to dance the way he does, every movement in perfect timing with the beautiful drum. I would like that tipi.

  • Maybe you "don't care what his regalia looks like" but every dancer should. Ever been at a powwow and see a dropped Eagle feather ceremony? After one of the veterans who picks up the feather (after the sacred ceremony is done) approaches the dancer and will speak quietly to the dancer who had it fall from his regalia before returning it. The dancer's competition is done, for he has been disqualified.

  • It is a humbling reminder to the dancer how and why he must always check his (or her) regalia before entering the circle. Possibly this dancer was losing his bustle, he should have stopped his dancing, tightened it, then resume. Seeing feathers dragging on the floor as his were, was painful to watch. Have a nice day KangiWinyan, you have learned something new.

  • I to agree with ImI46, I am East band Cherokee and Lepan Apache. I don't care what you think, but as being a fancy dancer and all of my experiences, YOU MUST CHECK YOUR REGALIA!!!! If it falls off or comes lose. Then you must step out of the circle and tighten it or ask the Arena Director to pick it up for you. Especially a bustle! You must make sure that IT MUST NEVER COME OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Beautiful! I want to visit... It's now on my list. :o)

  • oh yeah...i like how they put freakin teepee's there...since the Cherokee didn't live in them...they lived in wigwoms and longhouses. My Grandfather is 1/4 Cherokee and his grandmother was 100% =)

  • @xxlaciebrookexx same for me brother!

  • @xxlaciebrookexx

Its for tourism...i've been to that reservation every summer of my life...they have to bring in revenue...but they still have the village on the mountain you can go tour...my grandmother was half Tsalagi and 1/4 Lakota...so i know its irritating...but they have to draw tourists...and tourists want to see teepees and loincloths instead of long houses and clothes...

  • His bustle is too low. Looks like it's ready to fall off.

  • thats frigin sweet

  • I'm part Cherokee :) It's very little, but I still take pride in it.

I wish I could find out more about my past, but I only know my Great Great Grandmother's name and that she was Cherokee. :( That's all I know.

I've even given myself an Indian name: Hidden Wolf.

  • they had cameras in the indian days!!!!???

  • Edison filmed some stuff in the 1880's I believe

  • im ment tslagi

    great one

  • osdi tsunali

im mixed with Black and Cherokee

    loved the video

    sonadagivei

  • T_T its nice to see our cherokee living so long. I got cherokee heritage in me as well and I picked out my own cherokee nickname as well (Young Wolfe)or in Cherokee speak: (a-da-hi wa-ya)When I grow up, i'm gonna travel all the lands of my cherokee ancestores! (Though right now i'm only 14)So Shawn! You keep on dancing and i'll keep on practicing my panpipe. :)

  • Is he cherokee indian???

I have alittle cherokee in me.

    Awesome video!!!!

  • He is an amazing dancer I can only hope to see it one day in person. Thank you for sharing.

  • The Indian performing this dance is Shawn "Lone Wolfe". Believe it or not, he is 93 years old. I met him this past week, performing that same dance in the exact spot. He is in incredible shape for his age. When asked the secret to long life, his response was "prayer".

  • I cannot believe this guy is 93 years old - he's brilliant and so entertaining - I would like to know what keeps him so young!
