Good one Chris I've been using this for decades but only by putting my flat open hands where you have the folders. The other way is to sing quietly into the tiled corner when you're in the shower. You may also find that your voice is a lot louder than you thought it was. Besides, the shower is a good place to try this, unless you're showering with a friend.

I had a voice teacher at a college class last night, have me try this last night while I was singing in front of the class. I did not understand what she was trying to show me. And I felt foolish. It freaked me, out not hearing myself like I'm used to. Now, I see she was trying to get me to project my voice out, and to hear my voice more like everyone else does.

My voice sounds more muffled and less clear when I do this, but it doesn't sound like that on recordings, so I'm not sure this method "really" shows you what you sound like to others - for a start, others are capturing your voice direct into the front of their ears, whereas with this method you've blocked that off

cool tips! more on why you sound different you're talking than when you hear a recording of yourself, it's because when you hear a recording, you hear it because the sound traveling through the air is hitting your ear drum, causing vibrations that is interpreted in your brain. that's hearing by air conduction only. but when you are directly talking, in addition to the air conduction, you also have bone conduction. your brain puts the two together to produce the final interpretation of sound.
