  • asshole, my eyes are bleeding with taht camera treat

  • really nice space!

  • Nice tutorial man!! Enjoyed very much.

  • Nice advice that you give us man..

  • Very nice man. I have a fender jag special but that guitar makes me jealous. Cheers!

  • Are you running guitar into sustain into distortion into delay into amp?

  • @tyrrellfox Dude check the video info I have put the effects chain there.

  • Damn, you really can make that MT-2 sound good!

  • i love how so many people use the sg especially for postrock-stuff. well, its a very flexible guitar tho..

  • The first effect reminds me of shoegaze black metal a.k.a post-black metal

  • I've not been playing long myself but watching someone explain their interpretation of a song doesn't half give inspiration to someone like myself just going down the 'effects' road...Respect and keep it up!!!

  • how much would ur whole set up cost pedal wise if u dont mind me asking?

  • THANK YOU!

    Awesome.

  • is that a gibson sg?

  • @ iscareuiknowit The fundamental frequency of the snare drum must be F#.

  • Whats the song song?

  • sounds great!

which marshall amp are you using?

  • Every time you play an F#, the snare drum on my set in my room resonates. Its funny.

  • youtube.com/watch?v=dDaIjpvieqM guys check my songs, i am post rock artist, and i really need more attention :( thanks!

  • nice dude, I really appreciate this

  • I just discovered Mogwai today, I thought I heard all great music. To me they create a certain atmosphere like pink floyd does but without going over the top with it, the create the same energy has all the emo bands but without the gay screaming, and the fingerstyle reminds me of the piano which I love to hear recreated in guitar.

  • Great upload. Post-rock is awesome!!!

Check out this new post-rock song, go search for:

The Inituition - Open Your Frozen Heart And Start Living Again (NEW 2011).

    VERY STORMY AND MOVING!!

  • Your room have a great 'Van Gogh Room' effect :)

  • What pedal is giving you that spacey effect at around 4:15?

  • i like math rock better, even though there basicly musical cousins

  • @johnathantowers91 Who the hell are you to judge and what does it matter how good someone is on the guitar? I play because I enjoy it and it think 58,000 views would suggest that people have found this video useful regardless of whether its "kids stuff". Do you see anyone else telling people how to create this effect? No one is saying that its difficult. All I am doing is sharing how to use the pedals to create this sound to share with people who are interested.

  • @wxb499 lmao, ignore that guy. He's a spamming troll :)

  • @wxb499 having played for 8 years and never known any post rock effects until i stumbled upon one two weeks ago, i found this video incredibly insightful and useful; saved me a lot of time and gave me a good start for my own experimentation. thanks.

  • @wxb499 too right mate.. let them wallow in negativity.. their choice

  • @johnathantowers91 i never learned chords....and im in 3 different bands playing 3 different types of music..you don't need to know how to read music or know what chord is which.as long as you have a passion for the music, nothing else matters.

  • @nyhardcore18 Anybody with a passion for music would learn all the theory they can. Somebody who just shows up to gigs with no idea what he's doing but who claims he has a "passion" is just playing rock star. People with a passion for music sit in their rooms for hours practicing scales and chords because they love music and want to grow.

I'm not talking about you, to be clear, you sound like you take this seriously. I'm just saying, never assume that passion takes the place of hard work.

  • @AeolianSeventh well said

  • @AeolianSeventh that's ignorant shit...no offense but i know several musicians who don't give a fuck about theory or memorizing scales and chords...they can wail out arpeggio sweeps and shred like crazy motherfuckers. they don't know what its called...they don't care...just because their self taught and don't want to get all neck deep in the know how of it doesn't mean they aren't musicians...if you can play something that people find listenable and enjoyable it doesn't matter, it's emotion dude

  • @StonerMafiaRecords I guarantee you every one of those people you're talking about knows plenty of theory, whether they know all the technical terms or not. Plenty of great players are self-taught, but the "taught" part is what matters. Regardless, I'm not going to waste my time arguing with the kind of person who posts "that's ignorant shit...no offense" and expects to be taken seriously.

  • @johnathantowers91 i never learned chords too, i love musik. im playing and i love musik

  • @johnathantowers91 It's not a lesson you idiot, it's just a guide to help budding Post Rock guitarists

  • this... is amazing

  • What did you use for the loop?

  • @psyshock918 Boss RC-2

  • ok so i dont own any pedals but adore the shoegaze/post rock effect. whats the 3 most essential types of pedals to own??? i dont have tremolo or reverb on my amp btw.

  • @SuperiFox tremolo, delay and reverb. and a dirt pedal. go with electro harmonix pedals, amazing effects and really good prices. look at the germanium big muff (dirt), holy grail plus (reverb), memory man (delay) and a Boss tremolo is easiest to work with. phew.

  • @hanusanus666 thank you man!

  • @SuperiFox no worries, thats a few of the pedals I use. Might be a bit biast but it works for me! Also look at a Polychorus for making some weird sounds

  • @hanusanus666 ok cool. could you post a video of setup like this?

  • Amazing. Must save some money

  • nice...keep up the good work....

  • great tapping sounds

  • Some neat ideas! I might snag the tapping technique that sounds like trem picking. I always just thought it WAS trem picking. lol. love it. Thanks for a cool vid!

    -No Ideas But In Things

    (check out my music!)

  • Comment removed

  • woow coooool...how much did that shoegaze pedal (i dont know what else to call it) cost you?

  • woo its beautifull song

  • Thanks for your tutorial, interesting and helpful.Good job!

  • Time to save up some money!

  • this is post, very nice post

  • this is absolutly post

  • Great man!!!!!

  • erm, you might wanna annotate those parts where you're talking while playing. I don't really care even though I couldn't hear a thing, but I know there are people out there that might break your back about it, so I guess you could consider it haha

  • what song is that at starting at 2:37? awesome

  • @Theturbo6guy The first song is Helicon 1 by Mogwai. I have done a full cover check my channel

  • i didn't understand a damn, but heck, i enjoyed it.

  • This video is great man, thanks for posting it.

  • @Nagraath Already had this conversation. Just enjoy the music whatever its called

  • @Nagraath true it's post cock. get a grip black metal faggot.

  • @Nagraath how is mogwai not post rock?

  • @Nagraath why!?

  • @Nagraath This is Post rock. If Rinoa made it to top 100 post rock artists this is post rock.

  • @Nagraath And this isn't a youtube comment.

  • @Nagraath you saying mogwai isn't post-rock?

  • So what pedals were used for the first sound because it is amazing. Thanks.

  • @IsraelC10 Boss DD6 and reverb. Check out my Wall of Sound tutorial, it is better quality than this video and shows the settings better too :)

  • i know this queistion is ridiculous....but what sort of scales does post rock guitar use? i need a starting point.....fed up of pentatonic...

  • Amazing indeed. I am getting a lot into post-rock and admire the textures created. You guys are the most talented and creative musicians in today's music scene. I would even dare to say that you are the future of progressive music (may I use the term). Thank you very much for posting this tutorial.

  • This is really ace, I hope I can see more covers from you. Have you heard of the band, Jakob, by any chance? They're also really great.

  • @JoyceJennings They are one of the very best bands to come out of NZ, and you are only one of like 5 people I have ever seen who have heard of them.

  • @variatedata Jakob!!!! hell yeah Jakob are amazing

  • many thank you very much!

  • This sounds pretty wicked, but you totally need a Big Muff for the proper Mogwai noise :D

  • Are the pickups original? Thanks you.

  • @Solvernia Yeah man, you can use any guitart to get these types of effects. I use a squire strat as well!! Check out my video responses if you don't believe me!

  • What a yummy looking bcb-60. I want it. You could probably make some cool sounds if you were all sixes and sevens. Knock yourself on the head once then play. :D Good work (:

  • Cool stuff! Have you ever tried the mxr carbon copy delay? You can do some really crazy shit with it.

  • Okay, I admit my ignorance outright, but why the fuck do we need a need a new (and utterly pretentious) genre descriptor like "Post-Rock" for what just sounds like a bunch of bands trying to cop Slowdive's (and similar band's) sound from more than a decade ago?

Again, go easy me when you "SCHOOL" me, you ever-so-hip-and-current Indie kids; I honestly don't know any modern "Post-Rock" music beyond band names, and I'm really not being sarcastic or asking rhetorically.

    w/e the case, nice video.

  • @thesemenincident You can't describe Post-Rock as a genre. In fact, there is no "Post-Rock sound". Post-Rock bands just have in common that they're using unconventional musical elements or instruments in rock music and often do only instrumental stuff. BTW: Post-Rock isn't modern. It has been around since the late 80s, just like the "Shoegazers" (Slowdive).

  • @Beatbot @thesemenincident

I don't think it really matters what it is a labelled as as long as people enjoy the sound of the music! Post - Rock probably isn't the right term (even Mogwai don't like being referred to as) and thats me with lack of understanding but does it matter? I couldn't give a monkey's whatever you labelled it so long as you enjoy it. Thanks for the love for the video though. Hope you enjoy the others too.

  • @wxb499 That's what I meant, thanks. Many Post-Rock bands don't want get pigeonholed. As Mogwai said: Fuck titles and genres, it's music.

  • @wxb499 Don't get me wrong... I enjoy "this stuff" in your video, I just loath the terminology... I wasn't intending to take a shot at you or the musicians, but the fact that Post-Rock is "using unconventional musical elements or instruments in rock music" like that's just totally avant-garde or it justifies a new (and annoying) term... ESPECIALLY this kind of stuff (which, might I add, is a style that's had a huge influence on my own playing, so I don't want you to think I'm knocking it).

  • @thesemenincident No worries buddy, the main thing is we all enjoy it.

  • @Beatbot I still fail to see why the music press needed a new buzzword if it's not modern, and there's apparently not much in the way of unifying factors through sound (which is typically what descriptors are used to distinguish).

Post-Rock as a descriptor just seems like BS to me... it's pretentious music journalist crap... which bears no reflection on the music, of course, and this is only my grumpy, asshole opinion.

  • so inspiring !!

    thank you

  • @Tr1ploid

    I'm only human

  • Just wondering if I can emulate this with my digital processor? I am not sure if you know the particular model I own(Digitech RP355). It has 20 second looper too. looper is not an issue but I am concerned about effects!

  • @dsbm223

and btw, thanks a lot for this video. I loved it. I even have synced it to my Ipod lol.

I gotta figure out this effect somehow with my digital processor.

  • Great Video man, was alot of help. My drummer wants to start do some post-rock and this was a great video to point me in the direction how to get the sound. Your deff. a great guitar player. Keep up the good work man! Thanks

    -Dave

  • Were trying out the post rock genre right now, thanks for the tips,

  • Thanks for the great video. It has given me much insight.

  • On the off chance THIS is the video you're on about, Dale, I've seen it. It's good stuff...

(sorry, I've got no credit and replying to a text message, haha)

  • sell your jh1 & metal zone, they are really shit, you should know about it =\

  • im sort of a noob, whats recording your playing; like how are you able to play the guitar parts back?

  • @ralphy0103

he has a looper to do that with - check out loop stations by boss - some delay pedals also have loop functions...

  • Great tutorial.

  • Can the boss dd 3 make this same kind of effect?

  • The same effect that the DD-6 is making, or the effect that all seven pedals (and reverb from amp) is making?

    DD3 is just delay.

  • Hi, Sorry, I dont know english and dont understand that you said. Can you write what effect you use and how?

  • well EITS are awesome they are the master post rock

  • very cool)))

  • hi, you don' t use the flager in this vid, right?

  • Your right, no flanger used.

  • thank you.

    great video

  • you should buy a rv-3 im sure you would enjoy it.

  • @thecitylightsbloom Oh my god, if I could get ahold of an RV-3 again... the delay and reverb on that boy were BEAUTIFUL. If anyone finds and RV-3, get it. Period.

  • How much does that all cost?

  • NIce vid man.

  • Very well done. I've just been getting into Post-Rock and I love bands like Mono, EITS, Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Yndi Halda...is that what Magwai sounds like? Becuase I like it alot.

  • Mogwai are fantastic - Young Team (debut album) changed my life.

  • @HeartOfEchoes Yes, Mogwai is on of the "big" Post Rock bands, a more straightforward Godspeed You! Black Emperor, but no less emotional.

Def. check them out, as well as Sigur Ros' first few albums...

  • It's a shame that you only mention to Mogwai. I LOVE post rock and even though they're like pioneers of the genre i've never liked them a lot. There a lot of better bands out there such as Explosions in the Sky, Sigur Rós and of course MONO.

  • Yeah enjoy their music too. Sorry for the offence. I see that you are a keen Ros fan

  • @wxb499

whatever guys :) its all good music.

  • I have to disagree with you. Explosions in the sky are really good, and Sigur Rós is awesome, but Mogwai has some charm that makes them so beautifull. Also the fact that most of their songs don´t have lyrics makes them even more melodic.

  • i wouldnt say "better". i'd say "other good bands". i still think mogwai's the best and most unique band in the genre. their songs have just the right mix of joy and sadness, good and evil.

  • They're all very different. In my opinion, I only believe they're in the same sentence, or under the umbrella term 'post-rock' because they're (for the most part) playing pretty, instrumental songs.

As of 2008, pretty much any band who plays melodic, instrumental songs has been called post-rock. What happened to jazz, soft-rock, new age, etc.? Take away the vocals and it's post-rock.

  • hey on the rc-5 is the nob supposed to be a little bit slanted? when i bought my loop station pedal the phrase volume nob was slanted. it works someways. but i was just wondering is it supposed to be like that?

  • i might also suggest investing in an e-bow. you won't regret it

  • is the red pedal an RC-2 loop station?

  • Certainly is

  • im getting a dd6 boss pedal !

  • This is amazing...thank you. Post-rock is the greatest music of our time..

  • Do some Red Sparowes ya bastard lol :D.

  • Is that a marshall mg? they suck balls. i should know, i have one:(.

  • dito.

  • MG 100 DFX. Not had any issues with it personally but I only use it at home

  • It's only shitty when trying to get a decent metal tone.

  • the mg does suck for distortion but i miss the reverb mine had. that was the only good thing about it. now i just use the cab with a different marshall head.

  • Really nice :) how much money approximetly this set of effect pedals cost?

  • RC-2 loop station (£140), Marshall Jackhammer (£30 second hand), BF-3 Flanger (£65), DD-6 Delay (£100), MT-2 Metal zone (£70), CS-3 sustainer (£55) and Snarling Dogs Wah (£80? I think, I can't remember - it is discontiued now)

  • Thanks for info :)

  • mogwai hate being called post rock

  • They should stop playing it then. Lol.

  • and one more thing: you are great guitarist! I envy you ^^

    LET POST ROCK LIVE FOREVER!!!

  • WOW

great vid! thx very much for it ^^ it really helped me :D

  • Any of your pedals modded or are they all stock?

  • All regular pedals off the shelf

  • thanks for this vid man, it helped a lot :)

  • What are all those pedals, and where did you get yours from? I don't suppose you have a list of the pedals there on the floor, do you? It'd be much appreciated. And which pedal is used to record the first part of Helicon 1, so that you can play over the top on the second go?

  • Hi. Pedals from my right o left (as this is the order that they affect the sound) are:

Marshall DFX and channel selector (Black) -> Snarling dogs Wah Pedal (Green) -> Boss CS-3 (Blue) -> Boss MT-2 (Black) -> Boss DD-6 (White) -> Boss BF-3 (Purple) -> Marshall Jackhammer (Silver) -> Boss RC-2 (Red).

To record sound and play back over you need a loop station (or a deloay pedal) and I do this using the RC-2 Loop station.

  • Nice work man, nice work!

  • its a post-rock bedroom duh, haha

  • I have had it decorated since this vid as you will see in some of my newer videos

  • is the delay pedal the only pedal you are using to get that ambient sound at 1:20 (besides reverb in the amp)?

  • Yep. I just use the marshall jack hammer without any distortion or gain to add a bit more depth but works the same without

  • I want to play guitar and play Post Rock. Do I have to buy all the stuff that's on the floor?

  • GalaxySmith18;

Pedals help and are a really big part of the post rock sound, but you don't HAVE to do anything. I recommend learning basic guitar first, then start experimenting with sounds, don't get all the same pedals as anyone else, find pedals you like the sound of. Hope that helps.

  • Is it possible to get this sound with any guitar, or am I fucked? I've got a Gibson Melodymaker, and can I get that ambient sound too just by getting these effect peds?

  • Hey. Well I have two guitars, the Epiphone SG as in this video and a Squier Strat. I get great sounds out of both guitars. I don't know that much about guitars but if I can get a good sound coming from a Squier then I don't think there will be much problem with your gibson. Check out my superheroes of bmx cover to see the sound I get with my other guitar

  • pretty much any guitar, im using a fender aerodyne and a smaller setup than this (Boss DS-1, Boss DD-7, Boss OS-2 and a Marshall RF-1) and you can achieve a similar sound to this

  • GOD WHY!?

    WHY A METAL ZONE!

  • JACK HAMMER ! highly recommended, haha, basically all these effects are really good!

  • So what is the full rig, written down and in order?

  • Were you watching the beginning of the video?

  • nice tutorial, really, .....which pedal is the red one?

  • Looks like a loop pedal.. judging by the color I would say it's a Boss RC-2

  • Awesome!

  • Superb tone there man, keep it up.

  • You know when your doing the speed picking tapping thing

Are you just using the delay?

  • haha your camera makes your SG look like it has a bent neck

  • the beauty of a semi fish-eye lens

  • GREAT. Post rock is super

  • i can't wait to get those pedals haha

  • what's name of red pedal pease ... merci beaucoup ..

  • It's a Boss looper in a a compact pedal. There is a small one like in the video, a twin pedal version and a larger one. Search it up on google for prices and reviews.
