My sister once suggested that the eels (fish) were supposed to symbolize The Catholic Church and that Oskar's mom's nausea symbolized Modern Polish Womanhood and their revulsion to Catholic Tradition, or something like that.
I can't believe all the negative comments. Read the book. Preferably in German, if you can manage to learn just one foreign language. Die Blechtrommel is a masterpiece, and the film is very true to the novel. And a great work of art. Grow up, learn a language--especially an easy language like German--and shut up!
@BishoujoMagic Both are from the same family of Anguilliformes fishes but Moray is a tropical and subtropical fish. This is a Baltic Sea and this particular fish is an Eel. I have been eating it several times.
@MaciekWojcicki I... are you confused? I know that those eels aren't moray eels. You worded your original comment as though moray eels aren't eels so I was just clarifying. Yes, those aren't moray eels. They're European eels, most likely. Your comment is like saying, "That's not a black widow; it's a spider" lol
@MaciekWojcicki I'm not confused - It is a matter of languages we think in, I am not an American. When i say Eel I mean european eel, that is why scientists use latin.
I didn't understand a word they say, but I have read the book twice, so I knew what this part was about, and, I didn't find it that "gross"; anyway, I want to get the movie, great book by the way. 5*
Eels are fish after all,and all fish scavenge(Luca Brasi slept with the fishes) and they are supposed to taste good but 'I dont care if they taste like pumpkin pie' I cant eat them after watching this.
A film that is pure horror. These particular scenes are typical of the mood of the movie. Oskar's mother eventually goes insane in a most horrible, disgusting way.
I don't think many would would disagree that Oskar beats Damien (The Omen) by miles as the most sinister child on screen.
Naaah, first poke a stick or a rod through gills. Then cut the skin around the head and pull the skin off ( like a sock). Eviscerate and only then you cut the head and tail tip. Do it fast because all the time the animal wobble and try to escape lol. Slice the eel in half lengthwise, parallel to the surface it is lying on. If you want to eat off the bones, you can remove the backbone by knife or by hand. The head is used for soup and you can make nice leather with the skin. Nothing is lost.
I remember watching this movie on HBO as a kid, and having nightmares about this scene. The whole movie is just weird, but a good story about life in Germany during WWII.

in the book there was a wonderful/horrible paragraph about a woman "taking her pleasure with a live eel."
