I'm learning how to sign and my church allows me to sign for worship on Sundays. Sometimes I feel insecure because I usually sign in "English" and I used to feel like it wasn't as pretty or meaningful as ASL, so I decided to watch this video to see the how the song is "really" suppose to be interpreted. It was so wonderful to see an English version done so beautifully and now I'm more confident about my interpretations! Thanks so much for making this video! It's truly an inspiration!
When you sign you typically use the hand you write with to do most of the signs. For example, I am left handed, so I use my left hand for most of the signs. Any other questions?
one more question does it matter if you use your right hand or left hand predominantly? I'm watching her and noticed I'm using the same side where I should be using the opposite hand. Does it matter?
What I mean by "different" isn't to belittle anyone and I don't think anyone here is doing that. As an interpreter, I always enjoy feedback and giving feedback. Just like any other profession, feedback from co-workers/colleagues opens up opportunity to learn new signs/tactics to improve skill.
While there is no One Way to interpret one particular sentence, there are many ways of which may seem more appropriate depending on the grammatical structure/poetic nature/syntax/etc. Many interpreters use pure ASL grammer/syntac/etc. However, some interpreters are more "english" in their interpretation. Many people, deaf and hearing, have their own opinion to whether "englishy" signs are more appropriate than "straight asl" grammer.
The simple answer, no she isn't "wrong", but different.
@DWaller To answer your question, interpretation of ASL (or any other language) requires a conceptual thought process because of the ways the two different languages are grammatically built. Many interpreters sign the same concept differently just as when we communicate, we can send the same message to someone differently. ie: "Goodbye", "Bye", "Peace", "Farewell", etc.
If I was interpreting this, I might just use the same sign for either expression for they essentially mean the same thing.
I' m trying to learn sign and I'm copying her...but backwards. Can someone explain why there are so many different ways to sign the same thing? Is it slang or what? For ex I tried looking up the word "yeah" on ASL dictionary cause she does it to fast I can't see and they do it like knocking on a door where she waves her hand down hard and fast. Please help!
I wanted to add something to this (I know it was two months ago, but I feel that any information to someone learning is a good thing).
The 'knocking on door' sign is the same sign for "yes", which can also mean 'yeah' 'correct' 'sure' or even to mean something is true. Just like in English many signs can mean different things, (Christmas has at least three signs), you could sign the word 'done' as 'finish' (as in that's finished) etc. Also, it's easier (I think) to think of the sign for
Very nice sweetie, and I would love to see you try and take those feelings and let your body flow with what your feeling more. I'd like to see you put them all together..more flow with your body, let go and let your body flow with your signing. I enjoyed watching God Bless and I hope you continue on!
Great videography, nice signing, but is it really ASL? You should be careful to post signed English. Also when signing toward God I was taught to use the whole hand and not point for respect. Nice location and wonderful to see great songs in sign.
I'm on Facebook as MySharonah. I'm also CODA ... Parents deaf... 180 degree Christian :) and interpreter. This video is Amen a kiss from God. Please contact me. I have Big Ideas for you. Huge hugs!

So why are people correcting this particular girls conceptual thought processes. If it's just different ways of saying the same thing is she wrong?

to think of the sign as not knocking on a door, but as nodding your head (in this case your balled fist) up and down in the affirmative.
Hope you are still learning and good luck.
