Waldner is a complete player...good both offense and defense....and his ball placement really is exceptional. Those backhands really gave Timo some hard times. It's unfortunate though, Waldner did not emerge as the champion on this olympics but he definitely left a legacy and captured the heart of the world playing at his age.....Long Live the Greatest Table Tennis Player ever....peace yah all !
Timo Boll Lost to J O Waldner coz Waldner capitalized on Timo Boll's weakness which is his Backhand. Great match though. Timo Boll needs to improve his Backhand.
at this level its hard to say boll has a weak backhand. here is an exceptional example of change of pace, length and spin. it looks like a low level game but here, walner playes each point differently in the early games then, when boll loses his rhythm, spreads him left and right with quick shots and further confuses him with a lack of spin. the most important thing is that in the early games he varies his length and pace. especially while serving. genius playing. i show it to my students alot.
Waldner is what I like to call a natural born talent...he could have chosen a different sport and people still would have known him as a great athlete....It's obvious he loves the game and It has noting to do with money otherwise he should have choose soccer/football or maybe golf if is was about making money!
I am a Chinese. I must say Waldner is the strongest opponent for Chinese players in history. He is absolutely a great genius !! He deserves respects !!
This is the definition of sport: "an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc."
Sorry to be the one to break it to you, but chess is not an athletic activity, and it doesn't require physical prowess. Table tennis does. I think that's 'check mate" lol.
It disguises the sound of the ball when they serve...in really high level play they can tell how much spin is on the serve by the sound of contact and stomping makes it harder for them to capitalize on this...
@yobmas722 if stomping does add any power, it is incidental. The power and extra spin come from proper rotation of the body and a good snap of paddle brushing the ball. Compare the services of Timo (not stomping) in this video with Ma Lin (who stomps really loudly in any video). You should notice that both serves are equally effective (spinny, well placed, and varied), despite the difference in stomping.
@amount18 stomping is used because in our brain you hear the first bounce of the ball and it helps you predict how long it will be until the ball hits again and other things. When you stomp, they cant hear the first bounce which means you cant do this and it makes it harder to return
really? what about swimming, USA, basketball USA tennis Spain, gymnastics China, beach volleyball (mens and womens) USA, so far USA has the most medals so how is sweden best at everything lol
You made a misstake there, "boggecor". Look at the population of the two countries. It's amazing that such a small country like Sweden even get athletes at this standard in various sports, Peter Forsberg, Jan-Ove Waldner, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Susanna Kallur, Gunde Svan just for mention a few..
Sweden is definitely not best at everything, I'm swede and I'm proud of how many ahtles we can get out of our small country but we're not best at everything.
thank you tuttskifruttski, im not saying sweden isnt good dont get me wrong, and me being a tennis player i know borg is great. im just saying they arent best at everything because fredrikblom2 said they were, nobody is best at everything lol, err no country in this case lol.
they are just drying the sweat off their hands to get a better grip of the racket. I guess ppl started doing that when toweling in between points was made illegal years ago (you can only use your towel after every 6 points - to speed up the matches).
They wipe their hands near the net where the ball is unlikely to bounce (u don't want to mess up the bounce of the ball on your court with your sweat!) :-)
Also its sometimes used to break an opponents momentum, like calling a timeout.Timeouts are called to get tactics from your coach but also to break your opponents run of form
to remove the sweat off the hand.. and sometimes it's used to provoque the other player and make him angry.. we do it all the time it's fun! lol some people have sweaty palms they do it like every change of serve or so
@studioz87 It is good for the table. Tables, especially at this level (Olympics, etc) expect that. Tables feel unappreciated if sweat of these masters is not wiped against their close-to-the-net area. And we do not want to upset these tables, especially at this level, do we?
like many players, Boll does a pendulum serve with 4 fingers on the back of the paddle. it gives a better a feel, allows him flexibility in spin (thus keeping the opponents on their toes), and from my experience generally helps me keep the ball low and triple bouncing on serves.
Yes. But he's like the Michael Jordan of table tennis. His aptitude for this sport is amazing. I don't think there has been a player yet that is more impressive.
Yes the ITTF (international table tennis federation) rule is that you have to hold the ball in you open hand and toss it up at least 6 inches in the air. No serving out of your hand garage style. This is the real deal.
If the match in the round before this - Mal Lin vs Waldner - was fantastic from a Waldner point of view, then this match was a miracle. Again Waldner did the impossible possible. Will we ever see his like again?
boll controls an all round game with excellant control. he had his troubles fending off waldner's long range style of offense, still as anyone would deem while watching. its always easy to judge n comment by watching. but when ure dhe one playing, it would be from a different perspective point of view. Waldner may be older and is mrore experienced, but boll is much quicker and oppprtunistic therefore deserve better.
hey heyarashi, you're right, what I meant to say is that Waldner seems to be in better shape in this particular match, Boll is a great player but Waldner has more experience in international play.
...you dont know your facts lol. first, boll is better. he jus has trouble vs waldner cuz his compact stroke can't do well long distance and from past games, he knows waldner's play extends into long range as well. also, david beat goliath -.-
you really can't compare biblical stories to table tennis. waldner is the more experienced player true. but boll is the younger, quicker player with a more flexible game. waldner's golden years have long passed. a lot of times he gets in the quarters for show
I still love timo boll he is my hero
