Hey all, I've been trying to find (online) the history/background of this song. If anyone has any insight I'd be really grateful, it was one of my late grandfather's favorites and I've been trying to figure it all out (I'm in grad school for history... research is what I live for but this has got me stumped, online at least). Thanks in advance to any help.

I loved this song from cold mountain and was pleasantly surprised that the singer was not old and bearded. Not that it makes a difference, just kind of cool. Although the lyrical stylings were primo, I had a very nice laugh when the little/big one said :Daddy, you're scaring the owl". Hilarious!
In my mind (and musical soul) ..this song rivals the theme from Ken Burns documentary "The Civil War"..Ashokan Farewell. Just heartbreakingly beautiful..
Tim by the way that was cute with your kids in the video all excited about the Owl.. Kids are the best arent they.... They never cease to amaze you or make you have a good laugh...
mdfinch: I Think Tim is doing pretty good as I dont know if you guys all know he is the one that sings many of the incredible haunting songs that were the soundtrack to a very very good movie "Cold Mountain" With Nicole Kidman,Renée Zellweger, About Civil War Soldier and His journey back home. If you have not seen I suggest you dont rent it but go and "BUY" it is that good... Tim does that era justice voice. I think he is even better than Jack White.
whats odd is the other day I was driving up my hollow and there was an owl sitting in the road. I stopped and was tryin to figure out what it was (it had it's back to me.)Then it waddled off the road and perched on a fence post. I think it was injured. But that was the closest I had ever been to one. I went back down the road a few minutes later and it was gone. But there was definitely something wrong with it.
How many people, when out driving around (or at any other time) get to see an owl just sitting in a tree -- especially in the daytime? I hear them at night, sometimes even in the day, but I never see them. Amazing that you did.
Have you heard the Be Good Tanya's version of this song?

Hey this sounds like Captain Beefheart's Orange Claw Hammer. Where are you driving through? It looks cool.

@Machinegunhalligan I like the Beefheart comparison. I was just driving down the hill from my house in Amherst Mass.

Tim...What tuning do you use on the fiddle for the Cold Mtn. tunes?
burgerbob39 2 years ago
I just sang them. Stuart Duncan played fiddle, and I think he just plays in standard...

Hey I just realized--this is the tune for Barbara Allen, isn't it? More or less?
inatangle 4 years ago
Don't think so.... but the Appalachian version is similar in style.
empiremonkey 4 years ago
Yeah; now that I've listened more carefully to Barbara Allen (and practiced singing it), I can hear the difference.

I'm sad you left the Twin Cities, but I understand why.
Come back for a show though! :)

As soon as Tim starts serenading that owl, it turns its back on him! Crazy, crazy bird.

Oh thank you for posting this! Great song and video. This song brings me so much joy even though the song itself is so full of sorrow. Thanks again!

Wow! Great video. I loved watching the road go by. (I hope someone else was holding the camera! ;-) )
Beautiful scenery, great singing, beautiful snow. You even found an owl! And it matched the song you had been singing. Amazing.

Fantastic! An owl and all :-)
Were you driving AND filming AND singing all at once??

...and drinking coffee.

This is why you need to teach Luka how to drive.
