Incredible.... I loved her music back in the early 70's and still do. I was fortunate enough to hear her in, I think, 1974 at the beautiful Greek Theater in Los Angeles (outdoors at night, similar to the Hollywood Bowl, but smaller). Superb show. And, in fact, they recorded that show and it is available on CD (2 discs). I certainly recommend it.

Few singers are able to convey the emotion she does - and make you feel it.

I remember hearing this song over and over again one night in 1970 in a bunker at Camp Carrol Republic of South Vietnam just below the DMZ. Stirring then and remains so today, wow! Then I heard it between blasts from an eight-inch gun. The two fellows who were coordinating the fire orders from the field to the guns had the tape. We all enjoyed hearing it over and over then just like I do now.

@yoryi1960 Thats very true, when we saw Aretha a few years ago a fan rushed the stage and accidently knocked over her small stage "cooling fan" (used to prevent her raw arms from sweat-dripping during performances).

Since the cooling fan was aimed away from her she ended up overheating to the point of being soaked in a thick shell of pure dripping water....when the "cooling fan" came into contact with the soaked stage floor Aretha suddenly said things like RRRRRahhhHH! and OOO

I remember playing this song on my little battery operated record player when i was about 7 yrs. old. Around 1967or 1968. What is sad is my mom and did divorce in 1971, but they remarried in 1976 and they stayed married until 2008 when my dad died. there is always hope! they showed me that by example! There's a better version on youtube. Vicki Carr has on an orange dress (1969) and it's about 2 mins 45 sec. That's the powerful one. She belts this song out of the park and is cries at the end. This version is too fast.

To all those who like Vikki Carr's version: Do the lyrics make sense from a female perspective? Only if it were the norm for a father to win full custody of a female child in a divorce. How often does that happen? Only when the mother is mentally ill, incarcerated, or otherwise incapable of caring for the child. When the song was written, it WAS common for mothers to win full custody of sons, which is why Bobby Goldsboro's original version is the only one that makes sense.
