The interpretation on her original vinyl of a concert in Vegas is even better. Great artistry all around, together with a wonderful vocal instrument !!!
I always thought that this is one of the greatest performances of a song. I do not think I have heard of any other performer singing it, as no one could compare with Vikki's. Thanks for posting.
Incredible.... I loved her music back in the early 70's and still do. I was fortunate enough to hear her in, I think, 1974 at the beautiful Greek Theater in Los Angeles (outdoors at night, similar to the Hollywood Bowl, but smaller). Superb show. And, in fact, they recorded that show and it is available on CD (2 discs). I certainly recommend it.
Few singers are able to convey the emotion she does - and make you feel it.
I remember hearing this song over and over again one night in 1970 in a bunker at Camp Carrol Republic of South Vietnam just below the DMZ. Stirring then and remains so today, wow! Then I heard it between blasts from an eight-inch gun. The two fellows who were coordinating the fire orders from the field to the guns had the tape. We all enjoyed hearing it over and over then just like I do now.
Anya Neither can I. None of them have any depth, emotion or can convey any sort of feeling in their music.. Bobby Goldsboro does a fine recording of this song, well worth listening to.
I defy anyone not to fill up a little listening to this. Can you imagine Cheryl Cole, Lilly Allen, Lady Ga Ga, to name just a few, singing this? No, neither can I.
Cada vez que veo el video, me hace estremecer, para mi, una de las mejores interpretes, se necesita sentir lo que se canta y esta mujer es un deroche de sentimientos!!! mi respeto!
This song and Vicki Carr are legendary in the music industry. This is her song, no one else's. Unless you have no feelings or understanding of what love is, then I feel for you.
Yoryi1960 you hit it on the head with describing this song of Miss Carr' and her overflowing talent! She is an actress of song! One of the best singers ever.
Love Aretha, but nothing compares to Vikki Carr and her legendary voice!
ms carr's reading of this song truly stands out for me. she understood that emotive phrasing and nuance are key to lending devastating emotional power to a perfomance. even before i got to view this video (only recently), i've always visualized her as she sings that she's really tearing up with all that pain. she's only one of a few who really sings with real emotional power..
The first time I heard Vikki sing this song was on her Persion Room Album...she puts so much emotion and feeling in whatever she sings..Thanks, yoryi1960 for all your postings of this fantastic singer!!
This is quite possibly one of the greatest performances i've seen by anyone. Whenever Vikki sings these kinds of tear jerker songs I always think of this phrase...My God Vikki it's just a song. Outstanding performance.
This is the first video I had seen of Vikki Carr and I was hooked the moment I saw this emotional performance. Ms. Carr brings this song to life. Apparently Carol Burnett thought so too. Still, today Vikki Carr sings this song with the same passion and power as she did in the 70's and each time I see her perform it live my eyes well up with tears. Aretha who?
Vikki becomes a part of this song. Her rendition is better than Bobby's. I truly think that she is the best female vocalist ever. She is way up there with Shirley Bassey and Eydie Gorme right behind her.
I so wish Vikki did her "I Will Wait for You" to the same heart- and gut-wrenching degree as in this timeless classic.
She is the ultimate singer who kills me softly and gently with her interpretations. Always love you, Vikki, and thank you for a lifetime of beautiful music.
I have admired you since the late 60's. my mother introduced you to me when I was only 4 years old. I have loved you ever since. you have made an impact on my life. Just got a computer. hard to send a message through a rotary phone. your performance was amazing on the carol burnett show. hope you are well.
Oh, Gosh, Vikki, you really did me in, again... Here I am, almost 50, still crying over this song with you every time, oh yes every time. I can't seem to handle it when you pour your heart out. Superb rendition. The best in my book! Thank you!
I am 59 ,a musician since I was 12 ,drummer for the first 7 years ,then studio work ,Then I picked up guitar and this is the very first song I ever learned on guitar,,,,,,,,47 years later it is still my favorite song ,,I play 7 different instruments now but I always come back to this song,,and my guitar..I turn down ALL studio work ...this one is one of "THE " Greats of all time ..the math, the timing ,the emotion and how it draws you in to it,,,,,,they are so rare ..this is the real deal !
@yoryi1960 Thats very true, when we saw Aretha a few years ago a fan rushed the stage and accidently knocked over her small stage "cooling fan" (used to prevent her raw arms from sweat-dripping during performances).
Since the cooling fan was aimed away from her she ended up overheating to the point of being soaked in a thick shell of pure dripping water....when the "cooling fan" came into contact with the soaked stage floor Aretha suddenly said things like RRRRRahhhHH! and OOO
Dear yory1960, I like this song very much. And every time I heard this song , it remain me a song that sung by Miss Vikki Carr "six weeks every summer (christmas every other year ) It will be grateful if you have the song to post. Thanks !
@123Rockchild She lives in San Antonio Texas. She was one of the Grand Marshals of our fiesta parades this last month. She is a classy lady who always has time for her fans.
I remember playing this song on my little battery operated record player when i was about 7 yrs. old. Around 1967or 1968. What is sad is my mom and did divorce in 1971, but they remarried in 1976 and they stayed married until 2008 when my dad died. there is always hope! they showed me that by example! Thanks Mom and Dad!!!!!
I can't hear this song without thinking of my sweet mom and how it made us both cry every time. LOVE the emotion, voice and performance. LOVE how Ms. Carr's heart is just out there during it. LOVE it!
There's a better version on youtube. Vicki Carr has on an orange dress (1969) and it's about 2 mins 45 sec. That's the powerful one. She belts this song out of the park and is cries at the end. This version is too fast.
Mi muy querida Sra. Vikki Carr, gracias por darnos tanto amor a traves de su bella voz... Que Dios la bendiga siempre!!! Soy Mexicano, y su mas fiel y grande admirador. My love for you is forever!!! Grettings!!!
I don't believe that I've ever seen or heard anyone who emotes so much passion. Singing deep from somewhere in your soul. You believe every word and feel the passion. So much power in that voice yet so well controlled, you really know how to bring all of your listeners into your songs and really make them feel every pain and passion. I can't stop listening to everything you have recorded (even in Spanish) it's so beautiful, but this is my favorite!!! Thanks so much Vikki
@MrSeanodwyer140 In your next life, don't drop out of school after 1st grade or learn how to structure words correctly "-For Fucks Sake" I really don't give a shit if you got bitten in the ass by a Funnel Web Spider, don't FUCKEN use profanities when you address others if you don't know them you fuck.
@gpy001 Did you see a tear roll down at 03:27, and when the song is finished, that's why she turns and wipes her chin or something. Did you see this or am I imagining this?
Oh god, I just love Vikki Carr. This woman can sing and convey such great emotion. I love what she does on stage. Thank you Vikki for such wonderful moments of pure musical joy. Gracias por su talento y su voz con emocion y pasion.
Im 50 years old and this song still brings tears to my eyes. Momma and us younguns moving up to South Carolina from our home in Georgia, leaving daddy behind. In the 4th grade and getting a rude awakening to adulthood.
Fantastic...Splendid! I can't explain how I feel about this version, the singer, the way she delivers it. The music that emphasis the value of a FAMILY. Its worth it!

To all those who like Vikki Carr's version: Do the lyrics make sense from a female perspective? Only if it were the norm for a father to win full custody of a female child in a divorce. How often does that happen? Only when the mother is mentally ill, incarcerated, or otherwise incapable of caring for the child. When the song was written, it WAS common for mothers to win full custody of sons, which is why Bobby Goldsboro's original version is the only one that makes sense.
I feel your pain, but custody is only implied here. In the sixties it was not uncommon for a father to take his daughter before a divorce, remember women's rights were just comming into existence.
That is just false. Courts routinely gave full custody to mothers at that time, in the idea that children needed mothers more than they needed fathers.
I have the Aretha version on my iPod......she's a great singer but this song doesn't lend itself well to R/B Soul version.....i think Barbra has covered just about every good song ever written, thankfully not this one. When Vikki sings it, it has that level of vulnerability.....that's what I need to hear /
I heard this song played over and over one night in a bunker on Camp Carroll, Republic of South Vietnam, in June 1970. I was a reporter. The fellows playing it were relaying artillery fire from the field to the guns on that fire support base. It was wonderful to hear it then in between all that heavy fire, and it is wonderful to hear it now. Camp Caroll was right below the DMZ, the line between North and South Vietnam.
She was a big star in Latin music in the '80s and '90s. She slowed a bit in the 00s, but she still does concerts. She hasn't cut a new album in while.
The interpretation on her original vinyl of a concert in Vegas is even better. Great artistry all around, together with a wonderful vocal instrument !!!

The fellows playing it were relaying artillery fire from the field to the guns on that fire support base. It was wonderful to hear it then in between all that heavy fire, and it is wonderful to hear it now. Camp Caroll was right below the DMZ, the line between North and South Vietnam.

I also remember her singing this song and crying, I have always been in love with her. Where is she now?

She was a big star in Latin music in the '80s and '90s. She slowed a bit in the 00s, but she still does concerts. She hasn't cut a new album in while.
