Jimmy Carter put the lid on nuclear, declaring that coal would provide 50% of our electric power by 2000. Thanks, Jimmy. From a land-use aspect, wind and solar (being only 30% efficient) require huge amounts of space - and enviros are opposed to that. Wind and solar are fine for peak, temporary production, but not base-load.
Some of the high cost of nukes is the lengthy review, certification and licensing, plus litigation caused by enviros. New nukes are smaller, more efficient, reliable, safe.
