@Torbadill Schubert made the melody for sure but yes unfortunately the lyrics (a poem actually) are not german (i heard the german version and it isn't the same,because latin language is softer ,you can't denied it ,it's still beautifull in german but less accessible ). .Made by Walter Scott and adapt by Adam Storck.

So it's not totally german , it's not totally scottish,it's a masterpiece.
