This guy has a very unique style of playing in comparison to other YouTube videos.. It seems to be a much cleaner style, leaning more to a lagato sound more so then staccato like most sitarists play.. I love his type of playing, can't wait to get my sitar!
@choTsukiyomi825 If you are lucky like me you can find a decent starter for $400 (I love craigslist!). I imagine his sitar is most likely worth several thousand though. Try to find a used one because a low price new one will likely be a very "american" overproduced sitar (even if it says it is built in India, most sitars are, it doesn't mean it's authentic) research it! Get excited about it! Decide how many strings you want and how much you are willing to put down for it.
the raag is the way you play the notes in a particular scale, there is also a fixed melody in a slow 16 beats in the first part(actually vilambat gat in teental), you can tell where that is as the tabla player takes a solo, in between the sitar improvises with phrases of varying lengths. it is improvised because it is never the same twice, but it obeys strict rules designed to give each raag a distinct character
@amdestuiani That's perfectly normal. I don't play sitar, but I do play the cura saz, a Turkish instrument that's vaguely similar. In non-Western music, things can be different - I know that for guitar, there is an accepted standard tuning, but for sitar the tunings vary from teacher to teacher, area to area. Sitar frets are actually movable, so you can change where they're placed to suit the raga. And anyway, I'm sure such a distinguished player wouldn't play on a sitar with missing frets. :)

@EVLWNS thats because they do. but in classical hindustani music you have ragas which are basically a set of notes, and a mood, around which you are allowed to improvise ^^
Wow..with each other to the last note..wonderful..and i think the sitar palyer has got a serene beauty about him...i'm sure his wife (i'm being presumptious here) sees him as very beautiful...but as the saying goes...'beauty is in the eye of the beholder'...
The music is amazing. Perhaps if we didn't live in a society that puts a greater preference on a music artist's looks than their musical ability, than the state of our music industry would be a whole lot, dare I say, prettier.
How superficial to make such a fuss of what the man looks like! (70 votes today that support a comment on his unattractiveness) We judge people here for the music they make or for their faces, or what? The handsomest guys can be the biggest creeps, trust me, I've been around.
Beauty comes from within. Physical beauty wears off and gets unnoticed after a while, but beauty from the heart and soul does not.

This is the most melodius sitar piece I've ever heard. The raaga captures the mystical air of the instrument and the uplifting tempo and variations on the theme are awesome. This makes for great relaxation and very energizing Probably Raaga kirwani although I am not sure.
