You definitely needed the manual and maps and stuff with these old strategy games. They were 'intelligencent up' rather than 'dumbed down'!!! :)

I got the full version from the piratebay, played this game when I was like 9 and damn that game was awesome, found it even scary to play at times.
Another classic game that you should try is Populous - The Beginning.
