  • i love this video!!! thnx for posting it. just great vintage bjj.

  • Hahaha great video of The Golden Years (50's) a really romantic age... Jiu Jitsu also romantic. State of art fighting... not the bully attitude of today. Jiu Jitsu is a sport, not cowardice

  • Awesum vid

  • -'-

  • haha...good stuff and love the ending! great marketing for way back then!

  • immediately after the big dude got submitted by the little guy the big dude also enrolled in gracie and a few months after, you all know what happened haha

  • Man i miss the old days where girls only like guys cuz of there toughness instead of dressing all gay and emo who is sensitive and shit. It like girls are getting difficult but a century.

  • No, what you do is bring a hotter girl with you to the beach so after you break dumbo's arm you can galavant around the first hussy with the babe in tow.. That'll teach her.

  • Lol, the end was like the story about how Fabricio Verdum took up BJJ

  • jujutsu is judo

  • @1hqvpc The technique is called Sode Tsuri Komi Goshi (Judo Nage Waza)

  • i wouldn't want that gf anymore if i was the kid...she's a slut....but the video was great. those gracie guys were great. it seems that the martial art changed a LOT since then...back then it seemed more like a mixture of jujutsu and judo rather than what bjj looks like when i see demos now.

  • @TonyDent84 .........Gracie Jujitsu came from judo go figure. And yes it has evolved into a great one on one situational style and a must know system if you ever go to the ground.

  • @anhkhoinguyen

It came from a guy named Maeda, who was a Judoka, but also traveled the world as a prize fighter (against wrestlers) and, taught them self-defense methods. What is show in the video is closer to what jujitsu is/was than what Judo was and, is today. It wasn't a way, but an art of self-techniques that changed over the years into what it is today.

  • @ 4:10 it is called Sode

  • wow o melhor video q ja vi, uma verdadeira reliquia da historia do esporte!! RIP mestre helio

  • awsmw vid!

  • cool video

  • gracie jiu-jitsu the best!!!!!!!!!!

  • @graciepr Gracie jujutsu is not the Best...at least not all the time.

1.Against bigger fighters they drag out the fight till they find an opening for a submission. But in real life most fights last only a few seconds or minutes b4 its broken up. all that 1 hour grappling can only happen in the ring.

2.Noone hangs out alone, In a real fight you roll around on the floor you gona get stomped n kick by his friends. true 1on1 fights are rare.

3.the guard is useless when your slamed on the cement.

  • @anhkhoinguyen Valid points, but:

1- That's against skilled big guys. Being big doesn't help that much for the layman against the experienced grappler, and for the shorter guy it's easier to deal with the big guy in grappling range (where height and reach are less important).

2- True, but what if it's the the other that wants you on the ground? You must know how to sprawl and the other grappling techniques to avoid it and get back up.

3- True, MMA shows it. But guard passers stay on top.

  • I totally love How it goes all Charles Atlas on us with the third segement, except the 98 pound weakling is still 98 pounds, but can kick ass

  • I prefer BJJ of that time.

  • OMFG!! LMAFO!!! 6:27 a little overexagerated...?

  • Helio is really messing that dude up! In a lot of schools today, jiu-jitsu students aren't subject to such intense techniques.....which is sad. I am glad my sensi keeps it old school. Real fights give bumps and bruises!!! Training should be that way, but too many people are sue happy these days....which hurts martial arts in America!!!!

  • best video ever

  • Thanks Tim!

  • I cant belive Helio passed away

  • chicks dig bjj

  • Dating is tough in Brazil

  • LOL!!!!!! U can't imagine how tough it is...

  • this is too funny

  • LOL great way to take back ur gal xD awesome

  • Ja,ja,ja,si mi novia se fuese con el primero, que le dice un piropo,y encima me pega, sería yo el que nunca volvería con ella...

Ja,ja,ja que mentalidad había en ese tiempo xd!

  • to pull the girl of your dreams just arm bar her current boy friend.

    mental note that one

  • "there goes your girl" lmao fuckin epic, i love the gracies

  • i know this is fucking hilarious. it was like rex kwon do, just break the wrist and walk away,..

  • Lovely

  • way cool, moves havent changed that much. love the beach scene

  • legal!!!

  • i have been training for almost three years and I have looked at probably a thousand gracie vids and this one is amazing

  • No judo black belt could come close to defeating people like marcelo garcia, jacare ,roger gracie ,team brasa etc.

  • Dont count on it

  • I love Carlos Gracie's body slam/guard pass wow Jiu jitsu has come a long way.

  • for real

  • JUDO!

  • after defeating the big guy he sits down to the girl and says "that's what'll happen to YOU if you EVER leave me again bitch"

  • So BJJ is basically Judo but the Gracies tried to bran it as their own. Hmmm.

  • Do your history. Judo is basically Jiu Jitsu but Kano decided to brand it as his own. BJJ and Judo come from the same branch..some of the old practicioners and schools kept the name Jiu jitsu instead of Jiu Do (JUDO). And I have yet to see a Judo Player defeat a Jiu Jitsu guy in a fair competition. So let's not start this shit.

  • So Helio Gracie vs Kimura wasnt fair ?

Sounds like you need to do your own homework. Maeda who taught the Gracies "Jujitsu" was actually a Kodokan Judo student of Kanos and had almost no history of training in Jujitsu whatsoever. You could say Judo is a form of Jujitsu but its goal is different (ie not to kill as quickly as possible in battle)

As for BJJ vs Judo is nonsense - train both - BJJ for groundwork and Judo for standing.

  • I agree with you..train both and it's hard to beat. No, Kimura (props to him) was an unbelievable athlete and judoka..Helio was nowhere near his size or ability technically. But today in a test of submission grappling you know as well as I do that 9 out of 10 jiu jitsu guys are going to win. You know what..let's just start differentiating Judo and Jiu Jitsu as throwing vs newaza specialists than it will make more sense. Brazilians have focused almost totally on Newaza.

  • Yep - have to agree with you there. Seems like were both making sense here now.

  • The scene on the beach reminds me of the old Charles Atlas ad, where the skinny kid goes to lift weights, and then comes back and beats up the bully - LOL!

  • I love these old school Jiu-Jitsu videos. I was into martial arts in the mid 80's when I was 12, and had never heard of Jiu-Jitsu until the mid 90's when the UFC started. I just can't understand why no one knew about it (at least in the US) for so long.

  • That's because "jujitsu" (original spelling) was virtually dead in Japan with no organization. Jigoro Kano, founder of Judo, combined 8 schools/styles of jujitsu and took the best techniques that could be practiced consistently without injury and turned it into Judo. He then sent out Judoka from Kodokan out to the world to teach judo & Maeda (Kodokan pupil) taught Carlos Gracie. Gracie's used "jiu-jitsu" name for their marketing & created UFC in the 90's.

  • Interesting. Thanks for the history lesson (seriously).

  • exactly ww2 judo was very similar to bjj nowadays but kano changed the rules ( stand ups due to inactivity) to preserve to the throws of judo the judoka that came over to brazil around that time taught his form of a more ground based judo to the gracies plus he was fighting vale tudo style matches.
