Absolutely BEAUTIFUL! Just learned of The Comedian Harmonists, their story and wonderful music. As I 'fast' approach my 70's, I keep turning back to the 20's, 30' and 40's for music of those difficult days. Do enjoy those songs so much and with all the comments posted, will have to get out my German to English dictionary. Thank You :)
@ble8ckerstreet I'm with you! I sit with two windows open while I listen to this stunningly lovely music. One for the video, and the other for the translations.
I love this piece, good memories of the class trip in the final year of highschool we took to Berlin, where we saw a performance by a theatergroup covering the Harmonists' repertoire.
Sensitive and beautiful. I became familiar with the C.H.s by the suggestion of a friend. It's easy as a musician in the U.S. to forget that so much great music occurred all over the world. 'Course, now everyone here in the States wants to be a gypsy jazz guitarist....
they split up. The three jewish members emigrated first to australia and later to the us. One - erich collin ( one of the tenors) died because of some operation in the 50th I think - the founder harry froman/frommermann returned to germany but died shortly before they became famous for a second time in the 1970s - and Roman Cikowski the baritone became a well known jewish cantor in the us. He stopped singing all this light-hearted music when he heard of his family being murdered
ahm, no - I'm from Germany. I named myself after Miss Honoria Glossop - who was one of the rather unpleasant girls bertie wooster managed not to marry
Some of the best lighthearted music has been composed and/or performed by musicians who lived under great stress or in times of enormous social upheaval. Germany and America in the 30s are just one example. Cikowski suffered terrible personal losses, but as he aged, as with any singer, the timbre and range of his voice changed quite a bit. What a wonderful talent he and the other members of the original group had! RIP
Lyrics 1: Don't know why there's no sun up in the sky, Stormy weather. Since my man and I ain't together, Keeps rainin' all the time. Life is bare, gloom and misery ev'rywhere, Stormy weather. Just can't get my poor self together, I'm weary all the time, the time, So weary all the time. When he went away the blues walked in and met me. If he stays away old rockin' chair will get me. All I do is pray the Lord above will let me Walk in the sun once more.
I only have the English lyrics, and maybe somewhere the French version. But of course you are right, since they sing it in German, I should have posted the German lyrics as well. Give me some time, maybe I can find them. They are hard to understand, so transcribing directly from the song might lead to mishearing one thing or the other.
WONDERFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here's a Wikipedia excerpt:
A 1933 song written by Harold Arlen and Ted Koehler and first sung by Ethel Waters at The Cotton Club in Harlem.

When was stormy weather written?

Without you the whole world is without joy for me.
Ask you own heart what I suffer for and return to me
and return to me
you outpace my with all my sorrow
return you must (really it sounds a bit like Master Yoda!) - for me to joy
and so on...
