i love these trucks but i always have been reluctant to get one. how do you get parts when shit breaks? it seems like dealing with that could be a big pain.
I'm looking into purchasing one of those too. Mercury insurance company said no, but I hear Progressive insures them. What insurance company did you go with?
I got a douce and ah half russian 6x6. She is older than me, 60 something, but she can do that. finding parts is easy, take a trip to russian and choose from the millions laying around. Insurance? I pay about 500 Euro a year, and drive it every where.
i wish i had the m813, but my freind has an m54,its a 5 ton also, he bought it about a week ago and were gonna have some fun with it, to bad it dosent have the 855 but oh-well its still cool
Difference between a 2.5 Ton and a 5 Ton is about like saying twice, Overall size is about double, weight is double, winch is double. a 2.5 ton is rated 2.5 Tons cargo OFF ROAD, 5 Tons Highway, a 5 Ton is 5 Ton OFF ROAD 10 ton Highway. M-817 is a 5 Ton Dump, 20,000lb front winch, has had it loaded to 49,000 GVW and it kept trucking through axle deep mud. Power is Cummings NHC 250 Diesel 865 cubic inches.
my dad let me drive on of these when i was Eight. put me in his lap and let me steer. you know only going 2 mph. but still at 8 years old. thats the coolest shit that has ever happened in the entire history of the world no contest. :D
Does that have a leaf spring rear end? that rear end sure as hell has some independent travel if it does.
How much did you pay for this truck? I'd drive one around town. F-it make my own parking spaces and i bet nobody tail gates.
Well, I guess I could have just bought a picture of a truck too and put on the wall in my garage.... I needed to know if the rear wheels would hit the bottom of the bed.... That ravine is my neighbor's front yard.
Those are 16-20 Michelin XL's. Lots of people put them on. When you do they are called Super Singles. You use bolt-together beadlock wheels off newer 5-tons and I run them tubeless.
In 1987, while attached to 9th Motors in Okinawa, we performed many conversions to the Super Singles. Initially, this conversion was not well received.
I was with 3rd LSB from 1985 to 1987. Our motor pool was across the street from you. Where they put in the new Comissary. Most of the Marines from my MVOC from Camp Geiger went to 9th motors. I went to TT school at 9th motors. Semper Fi
its not expensive, it just probably has a huge insurance price cuz it is so freakin big. It burns diesel, jet fuel, veg oil etc. Ive seen them for about $5K-12K on craigslist
Surprisingly enough the insurance was only $150 a year because it is licensed as a collector vehicle. Anyone that is into these trucks should do that - it's WAYYYY cheaper then commercial vehicle insurance, which is what I have to have on my HEMTT, because it's too new to get collector status.
I bought my M35 which is the 2.5 ton a little smaller than this for 1750 USD in perfect condition from the US Government, and insure it for 107.12 USD per month... So yeah I pay a year almost what it cost to purchase, but I'm planing on driving it daily...
Lucky bastard, I cancelled my insurance thinking I could get something cheaper than $156/per month, after dealing with other people I had to go back to my original insurance, and they increased my payment to $214/month because there was a no insurance time. 2 small @fault, one getting dropped in two months....Can't wait 'till I'm 25 :( (23)
yeh i'm 21, but apparently they didn't realize how heavy the vehicle was. Just recently got a call, now the insurance for the deuce is costing me 240 every 6 months :( i can't wait till i'm 25 either!
He's likely telling the truth - these vehiclesa are generally insured as "collectable" vehicles, and the anticipated mileage is very low. They are shockingly cheap to insure. I wish my hemtt could be licensed as collectible, so I could get the cheap rates on that too.
I dunno, my dad registered his as a "Recreational Vehicle" because the DMV wouldn't let him get away with anything else. Costs all of something like $20 a year to insure.
8 miles to the gallon. Its diesel so the are different. If its a cummins cyl than its only like 140hp and 280ft/lb's torque. Between the axle gearing and the transmission gearing the thing moves just fine though. They top out a 56mph...
did alot better than my m1008 did in a ditch
