Working all day, I'm digging up the roads, just working all day Dig for my pay and spend it where I like. I've nothing to say Drown in my sweat but money buys escape. I've got no regrets Working all day Working all day When I was young I used to have illusions - Dreams ain't enough. Papa was rough. He didn't care for learning. Hell life is tough. Easy to say that everybody's equal then look around and see it ain't true. Working all day I eat the dust. The boss gets all the money.
John Weathers is the glue that keeps everything together, like the John Bonham of prog. There is so much other stuff going on so you can easily overlook him, but he's the backbone of it all!
@heyawhaw I think it's Malcolm Mortimore - a drummer with a jazzier sensibility than John Weathers - who drums on Three Friends. But I do agree with you about the glue. That's the purpose of any good rhythm section!
They were my mentors for learning of music and because of them I am the musician I am today, multitalented and play several instruments and wise on theory and musical structures, Bravo Gentle Giant , one of your children salute you!..they will always be great..and to define thm simply..they are the Musicians Musician
I know their music well. Kerry Minnear was/is an incredible keyboard player who plays other instruments. I love all the sax parts too. Sounds like a alto or tenor and a baritone. What could they not play? The violins, violas and cellos too. Plus trumpets. Amazing. Gary Green is also highly underrated guitarist.
you´re right. I think they won´t be reached again by any band (now and in future) I can remember, how many people/ idiots hated them in the 70s at my school...One even broke "playing he fool" at a meeting...though he always said he loves and he understands music (!?) Later I realized, they were all deeply envious because they weren´t really able to feel and understand what was going on within the great GG music. Without them I never would have taken up the guitar. I agree with ya´comment!
There never has been nor will there ever again be a band comparable to GG. Make sure you give a listen to one of their strongest records, "Free Hand."

"Used to Believe Everyone was Equal, Then I Look Around, and I See it Ain't True!"
Wow! As a Handyman/Welder...I can't speak the right right words to applaud this Truth. Every nickel I earn is Sweat & Blood.

Wow... their music is the "gift that keeps giving".
End of keyboard solo @3:45 is a pure quiet zen moment, then BAM... workin' all day again.

OMG, what a song, what a band!!
The part from 00:56 to 1:02 always gave me 3-inch goosebumps. They play that part again too at 4:46 to 4:12.
Wow. Just wow.
But the whole tune is great.
I met them backstage & hung out with them for a good hour in the Auditorium Theatre in Rochester, NY in '75 or so.
Still one of the high points of my life.
Derek Shulman even poured me a glass of champaigne!
Their class and humbleness were exceeded only by their astonishing musicanship
and originality.
