Been playing ukulele for less than 24 hrs, never played a stringed instrument. Came here yesterday to learn D, my first instinct was- wow, that doesn't look right. Pretty awkward. Don't get how some of you can do 1 2 3 o on the second fret. My hands are pretty small & I can't come close. So figured this was an ez option, even if it might be tough to move to the next chord. Played this way all night. Ibuprofen all day today; my back and neck are killing me. 2 2 2 o from now on.
@Onlinecreature0 hey man hes just introducing a new technique is all, for some less serious players who want to make it easier, well it might make them wanna learn more.
Anyone who is a beginner here, please do not use the thumb. It makes life a whole lot harder when playing, you don't even have to bar it. Simply just place 1st, 2nd, 3rd finger over G C E on the 2nd fret. Whole lot easier :)
Thanks, I'm starting on the uke so this might help :D but seeing the comments below (Sorry if I'm wrong because I've never actually tried an Uke)... Why do you use a thumb for D?
You suck. Please do not post any more comments, you're not helping anyone. They are learning nothing from your grammatically poor, baseless criticisms.
Instead of saying someone sucks, say how they could be better :)
@carzorthade This guy needs to know that no you don't use the thumb on any cord.He is making his own stuff... I wonder where he learned to play theuke? I dont think that he learned here in Hawaii.
@Th3PnoyWarrior1 Barring the entire second fret would make it a D6 chord and not a D. The sound is different and for some people, it is too different.
actually it wasnt a month ago that i got it, i just noticed my other comment and it said it was posted 2 weeks ago, and i said a month ago . so i just wanted to correct myself
wtf? why is everybody freaking out about using there thumbs? and i think it sounds good, and that is a real uku at least its better than mine and mine sounds good. i just bought a ukuleele about 30 minutes ago and this helped me out :)
If you've just started playing the uke, I'd definitely advise you to avoid playing the D chord with your thumb. It may sound fine when all you're moving to is C, but just look at the way he has to hold the instrument to make room for his thumb to hook over the neck? Changing chords from that position would not be easy (try moving from D to G if you don't believe me).
Play D the traditional way, and you'll find it a lot easier. Best to start learning the correct way to avoid problems later on.
0.o that would hurt so much more if you use your thumb. My fingers are already numb from playing my ukulele so much & if i were to use my thumb i would probably...sprain it O.O! That's really dumb to try & use your thumb lol, for everyone's safety don't ^_^.
How the heck did this guy get called an 'expert'? You're not hurting anyone with these videos, sure - but if somebody who wants to learn the uke stumbles across these, you are an obstacle to them playing well. From your chords to your strumming, you are doing things very haphazardly. Learn the instrument for real yourself and THEN teach others.
@greenfire It's all personal man.. don't go imposing rules on people. Look at Hendrix, he used his thumb a lot.. maybe not for chords but who cares, as long as it works right?
@greenfire i used to use my thumb on a guitar. sometimes the situation just calls for it. but i do have to admit, this sitution does not and it's kinda awkward and uncomfortable to use the thumb. lol
It's an instruments pitch that determines whether it's a bass or not, and not the number of strings it has. The ukulele makes a high pitched sound, so therefore it isn't a "bass".
ukeles i hope i spelled right are like cheap miniature guitars but require alot less skill but i think is pretty good to get the feel of a guitar so play on.
Uke's are cool. I was playing one when I was 9 it was the first thing I ever played. I impressed my mom so much, she bought me a cheap guitar and a Mel Bay book.... That was 39 years ago and although I own several guitars, basses and a piano and drums and play in three bands today I still have a cheap uke and play it from time to time.
im play the ukulele and i go 2 the george formby convention and u sud go there is 1 in black pool and 1 in stourbridge u can get info about them in google tyupe in george formby and click on aprechiating the george formby convention
Using your thumb for the D chord? That's just developing a very bad habit. I've been playing the uke for 40 years and playing D like you have demonstrated makes for very uncomfortable uke playing.

i find the easiest way do hold a d chord, is by holding the 3 strings like a G7 chord

When you're just starting out on an instrument, that's when correct technique should be most important.
Just imagine if when you began playing the guitar you did so following bad advice and incorrect technique.
Just a bit of friendly advice, and you're free to take it or leave it of course...
